Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

Doesn't a large portion of Poland live off state handouts these days ? Could easily be 8-10 million people.

Certainly similar to the the number of African Americans who are welfare dependent

Language / Busha and JaJa [140]

I'm reading a book with a lot of Jamaican patois in it - hard work as I'm on page 400 of 700. Just came accross 4 uses of Busha and it seems to mean " master" or "boss" but could be grandad. Not much help from google either

Real Estate / Can you use your last months rent to pay a deposit? Is it legal in Poland? [18]

Well first he would have to find you. Once done then he needs to pay a lawyer maybe 100 zloty to start the small claims, then he needs to wait And at the moment all kinds of court are slow because of Covid and summer.

But if you have paid all your cash and he already has your rent sitting in his bank account wouldn't it be more logical to give the apartment a clean and get it back in the market, rather than waste time taking photos of minor wear and tear that are not going to prove anything.

Just my view.

News / E.U. Denounces Poland's Authority on LBGTQ Free Zones [150]

I cannot see any big foreign investments in those towns until they scrap this. Nobody is going to want the PR hassle and they will simply go to other towns. Of course bigots can still happily invest there but that is not going to creat many jobs,

News / The Fur is Flying! Animal Rights in Poland [87]

Would be strange to crumble over a fringe issue when there is the very big problem of the economy on the table.

New elections will be messy - PiS would still be able to use Adrians veto power eve if they list an election

Law / Relocation to Poland from UK & Relationship Breakdown (involving child) [7]

All good advice to which I would only add 2 points

It seems like she still likes you as a person if she begged you to stay, so try and be on speaking terms and in regular contact as that will make things easier.

Hold on to your other half of the money and maybe invest it somewhere not liquid - new flat or pension plan in the UK. There is a category 5 financial storm coming and you will need something for yourself. If it is illiquid then its more difficult for a Polish court to take that into account.

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

Yeah it's a bit dull but a lot better than it used to be. I didn't realize until yesterday that it has quite a nice old town

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

For me kids made a huge difference - before then I was fine with public trams and taxis. But getting to hem to and from school with no car would take a huge chunk out of the day. Doing a family shop without a car would be very difficult too. Then all the doctors, dentists, trips to Babcia etc

Reducing car travel is a good idea with lots of benefits, but much of the debate from the environmental, lobby paints drivers as selfish and heartless, when in fact most of them are just trying to get by and juggle busy lives.

But people already have freedom from congested roads, road accidents and road rage - because they can walk or cycle if they want.

I can live with congested payments

I don't live in Warsaw.

When I'm there I just tend to walk most places, taxis in the evening and occasionally a tram.

Whatever

Do you know I have read many books over the last few years about how Brexiteers, American right wingers and Trump supporters got tired of liberals looking down on them. What is weird on this forum is how those people are obsessed with money and material wealth and I think that it gives them superior status.

Anyway back to Poland - I have been driving around the West of Poland today - some pretty big towns and so far I saw one hybrid and one electric car. I haven't seen any charging stations though in Konin I saw a sign saying they were putting one there

Ah yes - I would need to be a member of the PF millionaires club :)

So your car can come to you in a marked parking lot and save you about 100 m of effort. Where do I sign up ?

I rad this morning in the FT that one of the promo videos for an electric truck was actually filmed rolling downhill - yet these same dudes have just signed a 2bn deal with GM

Well you are out of it now Victor - the U.K. left in January.

And what a successful and optimistic 8 months it has been for Britain since then, a model of good government for the whole world to salute

So it should be no problem calling Tesla in Warszawa and getting a test drive car to pick me up at my office and take me to my hotel - it's less than 1km but over one of the cities most complicated roundabouts

If they can send a car to do that I would sign a check the same day

Remote opening of a garage door has been around 30 years.

Self driving means the car driving you to your office While you work in some spreadsheets. Not a few meters down the driveway.

Are these inventions really enough to justify Tesla's worth ? It has a market cap of 4x the next car companies. That is nut and its mostly driven by small retail investors.

If you made money on it fair enough But this is subprime again - when the bubble bursts the people who lose on it will blame everybody except themselves.

No - what Budweiser have is a truck that drove 150km on a highway. I don't know if it changed lanes - if it did they didn't show it on their video.

My own van has been able to self park for two years. If it could do that then it can probably also drive in a straight line down the highway. .But that's not self driving - that's autopilot

Musk said Buying a car without self driving is like buying a horse - that's complete nonsense and hubris. He's a great showman a good inventor but there's no reason why Tesla will be the first to get proper self driving on the market

That is autopilot - it's not self driving.

What I am talking about is getting into a car, saying Biedronka and then doing nothing for 10 minutes while my car takes me there. That is decades away.

We may have something like self driving taxis in a few towns in 10 years or so it I can't see governments going for that in a big way until the political issues are resolved.

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

No - I'm not talking about assisted driving, but real self drive cars. That needs lots of investment in roads, working out how to deal with the road signs and the weather, new laws, dealing with some powerful unions and lobbyists.

For Tesla I think the first thing to achieve is battery life that gives them a range that allows a full days holiday or business driving. I would definitely consider one if I could drive it to Warsaw and back.

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

Can someone explain the million mile battery thing to me ? How does it add value to consumers.

In the US people do more miles but in Europe and I guess in Japan and lots of Asia they don't

I am not sure I have done a million miles in my whole life - I do about 40000 km a year now but when I was in my 20s for many years I had no car and in my 30s I drove much less.

Even a really heavy user is going to take 12-15 years to use a million miles by which time we might all be using jetpacs. Add to that the possible changes with people working from home a few days a week.

The self driving thing is decades away.

Sooner the better really.

Then you can drink your oil

Mind you I know quite a lot of the minerals used for the electric cars are also from Russia

It's always good to turn the tables on the bank !

But you do like your lawyers and courts Cargo - it's a sure route to heart disease.

Chill out and trim the branches yourself - you can get some fresh air and some exercise at the same time. Get your kids to help and teach them how to use the tools.

Work / What salary can I expect in Warsaw? [4]

Do you speak Polish ? If so then you will have a lot more options.

You have some quite good skills but without Polish you are much less useful and the 9000 zloty might be a stretch - almost all
Warsaw inhabitants under 35 speak some kind of English now. I don't know how marketable the social media / blog stuff is.

Your angle might be to focus on the e-commerce / customer relationship management stuff - the job market will be tight next year and employers will be looking for people who can put some money in the till.
