Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

Because she knows you. She knows you mean no harm by it.

Well, more like she lives in Poland and never heard it used in a derogatory manner. She just know's that it's used in reference to a person from Poland. I do see your point though. Racial slurs IMO are just a bit more harsh.

A black guy wouldn't want you calling him a n*gg*r unless you, yourself are black.

Definitely not the same.

The PL people in NJ that I know aren't offended by it either. I say it in front of my girlfriend and she doesn't even care. It all depends on the context I guess.

Life / Gypsies or Roma: European and Polish attitudes towards [87]

I think I've actually seen them :) This small boy was smoking cigarettes :/, but I didn't know they were gypsies. I assumed that they were darker then your average Pole (besides the tanning tracksuit wearers). I always see the same kids whenever I'm there too. I'm sure you know the ones being as you're from Poznan :)

Much better :) Thanks. Do they mix in with the rest of the Polish? I didn't see many in Poznan (more beggars in Gdansk from what I've noticed) do they live in seperate communities?

Life / Electricity in Poland: plug and voltage? [73]

yeah...should help him out right?

Moonlighting- Just pay attention to the voltage of whatever you're plugging into the converter....like an Iron. You'll need a seperate adapter for that. Maybe you should also bring a spare fuse or 2 :)

230 ?

I believe 220v and powerline freq of 50 Hz

I do see sites that have it as 230v though.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Have you ever tried to queue in Poland? I think at least in the US people stand in line properly without being shoved out of the way.

...and yes, there are a lot of rude Americans, but we're becoming more friendly in NY :)

Rude people can kiss my arse anyway :)

They tasted exactly the same :) I also had someone bring a bottle of the green one over. That one tastes the most different.

Life / Why are Poles always so miserable? Why do they never smile? [512]

I think Americans fear confrontation so they're just nice to everybody.

Fu*k Off :) We aren't nice to everyone. Maybe in the south they display exceptional hospitality. But if you live where I live a look can get your head kicked in.

We dont have to walk around with smiles on our faces just because someone says we should.

And we all don't either. Some people chose to be fake. Let's not make generalization here. I live in NY and I don't smile everyday because some fuc*er on TV say's it's courteous.

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

Gotcha. Thank's for the info.

The negative term of Paki came about when Pakistanis emigrated to the UK

Probably why I've never heard about it :)

Ya live ya learn. I'd hate to indirectly offend anyone, so this will be helpful.

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

what also iritates me is when people act niaeve to certain things

You don't know me... How can you say what I'm asking is naieve? Maybe this was invented by whit europeans, but I've never heard it used in a derrogatory mannor. It's like calling someone from Irag "iraqi".

You need to relax a bit. You can't assume that everyone is familiar with things like these. We're from all over the world.

Why is the term "paki" taken offensively? I think when some post this it's used as an abbreviation. Like "brit" Swede"Polak" What the proper abbreviation of pakistan? I'm not racist, but I've always used paki. So I'd be considered a racist if I say this?
