Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

On Friday, the Minister of Education, Barbara Nowacka, dismissed the Pomeranian voivodship education superintendent Małgorzata Bielang, the Podkarpackie voivodship superintendent Małgorzata Rauch and the Kuyavian-Pomeranian voivodship superintendent Marek Gralik.

the Kuyavian-Pomeranian voivodship superintendent Marek Gralik.

An article from 2016
tvn24.pl/trojmiasto/kurator-przestrzega-przed-halloween-jest-prosba-o-interwencje-ra685271

Kuyavian-Pomeranian education superintendent and former PiS councilor Marek Gralik warned against organizing Halloween-related events in a special letter to school principals. According to him, Halloween, which is "completely contrary to Polish traditions", is artificially transferred to Polish soil, and additionally "causes some confusion in the minds of children and young people."

He assessed that "organizing Halloween parties in schools and dressing up as spooky characters has absolutely no value." In his opinion, this may be particularly dangerous and even unacceptable in the case of children with mental disabilities, as it has a very negative impact on their psyche.

The curator also pointed out that in Polish tradition, November 1 is a day of reflection and pointed out that "some schools, as part of preparations for this day, but also out of a sense of duty, tidy up cemeteries, especially the burial places of soldiers who died in the fight for the freedom of their homeland."

History / Poland's January Uprisings of 1863 [86]

The 1863 Rising was a tragedy but also a blessing for Poland. Paradox? Read the short description of the events below:

January Uprising - Polish uprising against the Russian Empire , announced in the Manifesto on January 22 issued in Warsaw by the Provisional National Government . It broke out on January 22, 1863 in the Kingdom of Poland and on February 1, 1863 in Lithuania, lasted until the autumn of 1864, covered the lands of the Russian partition , i.e. the Kingdom of Poland and the annexed lands , also gaining wide support among the Lithuanian population and partial support among the Belarusian population.

It was the largest and longest-lasting Polish national uprising and was supported by international public opinion . It was a guerrilla war in which approximately 1,200 battles and skirmishes were fought . About 200,000 people participated in the January Uprising - both from noble families and, to a lesser extent, from the peasantry and middle class . In Lithuania proper , Samogitia and western Belarus, the uprising took on a mass character, involving not only Poles, but also Lithuanians and some Belarusians . However, in the remaining areas of the taken lands ( Polish Livonia , eastern Belarus, Ukraine), the uprising was indifferently or hostilely received by the Latvian, Belarusian and Ukrainian people.

Despite the initial successes, the insurgents ended in defeat, of whom approximately 10-20 thousand died in battles, nearly 1 thousand executed , approx. 38 thousand were sentenced to hard labor or exile to Siberia , and approximately 10,000 emigrated. Russian troops pacified the uprising with great determination and cruelty. Towns that provided shelter to the insurgents were burned, and there were also cases of massacre of civilians. Cultural goods were destroyed, e.g. the archive of the Zamość Ordinance in Zwierzyniec was burned . Vilnius was pacified by Murawjov Veshatiel 's troops , 10,000 Polish nobility out of a total number of 40,000 died in Lithuania.

After the failure of the uprising, the country and Lithuania were plunged into national mourning . In 1867, the autonomy of the Kingdom of Poland, its name and budget were abolished , in 1868 an order to keep parish books in Russian was introduced , and in 1869 the Warsaw Main School was closed . In the years 1869-1870, hundreds of cities supporting the uprising had their city rights revoked , thus leading to their decline. In 1874, the office of governor was abolished , and in 1886, the Bank of Poland was liquidated . Catholic monasteries in the Kingdom were dissolved , approximately 1,600 land estates were confiscated and intensive Russification of Polish lands began .

Despite the military defeat, the January Uprising achieved some of the political goals, especially the long-term ones, set by its organizers. It contributed, among other things, to stopping the policy of reconciliation towards the Russian invader, represented by Count Aleksander Wielopolski , and supported by some of the Kingdom's elites. As a result of the repression and suppression of the uprising, the policy of the Compromisers lost recognition among the general public. The memory of the uprising revived patriotic sentiments in the following decades, which contributed to regaining independence half a century later. The uprising contributed to a more favorable enfranchisement of peasants , both in the Kingdom and in the annexed lands, than in the other two partitions and in ethnic Russia . The consequence was a sharp demographic jump in the last three decades of the 19th century , but also a huge increase in industrial production, increased urbanization, and an increase in the standard of living. These economic processes were accompanied by the flourishing development of magazines, belles-lettres, theater and painting. What is particularly important: in spite of the Russification policy of Hurka and Apuchtin , Polish reading began to spread in the countryside. There were various reasons behind these processes; all together they testified to one thing: the exceptionally rapid progress of the Kingdom on the path of capitalist development. The basic premise for this development was the radical nature of the enfranchisement reform announced in 1864 .

After the fall of the uprising, a significant number of patriots, including the participants of the uprising (see Bolesław Prus , Hipolit Wawelberg ), turned to organic work , and the memory of the insurgents became an important motif in literature (e.g. Bolesław Prus , Eliza Orzeszkowa , Stefan Żeromski ) and painting (including Artur Grottger , Jan Matejko , Maksymilian Gierymski ) and motivation for a new generation of independence activists (e.g. those gathered around Józef Piłsudski ).

Girls spreading flower petals ahead of a Corpus Christi procession in Olsztyn.

What I have always admired and regretted on the Corpus Christi Day is the floral carpets for the procession.

Admired them for their initial beauty and regretted they get destroyed so brutally after being walked on.

A great idea! But I wouldn`t count on it. Hey, don`t consider me a blues infected poster now. I only mean that most posters aren`t skilled in posting photos.

I have a better idea. When you post sth, I will comment on it with my own associations. Just like with Religa photo.

Excellent idea. I haven`t posted yet coz you are doing a great job yourself.

But one commentary of yours brought back some memories in me:

A tired nurse stands at one of her patients bed in Warsaw Children Hospital

The famous photo of prof. Zbigniew Religa was taken by James L. Stanfield, a National Geographic photographer in 1987, in a clinic in Zabrze. He captured an extraordinary moment just after a dozen or so hours of heart transplant surgery.

Life / Polish women who made amazing careers against patriarchal society [128]

The first example of a Polish female who stood up against the patriarchal society is Nawojka from 15th century.

Nawojka - a semi-legendary figure from the 15th century, considered to be the first Polish student and teacher.

In 1414, fifteen-year-old Jakub (or Andrzej, this version is also available) began his studies at the University of Krakow . In fact, it was Nawojka disguised as a boy, according to legend, the daughter of the mayor of Dobrzyń nad Wisłą or - according to other sources - the daughter of the rector of the Gniezno parish school .

She learned to read and write in Polish and Latin at home. She was prevented from continuing her education by the customs of the time prohibiting the admission of women as uni students. Seeing no other option, Nawojka resorted to trickery. When in 1417, after three years of studies, she was preparing to take her final bachelor's exams , she was exposed by a male student. According to another version, Nawojka fell ill and the doctor who examined her revealed the hoax. There is also a version that Nawojka was exposed while pouring water during Wet Monday .

Nawojka was brought before a bishop's court . She avoided the stake thanks to the excellent certificates of science and morality given by her professors. Immediately afterwards, she entered the convent, where she ran a novitiate school . Years later, she became the abbess of the monastery.

PS. The first female dormitory of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, established in 1929, and the street (an extension of Czarnowiejska Street ) are named after Nawojka .

Polish girl to be treated as princess. don't be so stupid.

Why stupid??? If females dream of handsome princes who ride white horses and rescue oppressed gals, why can`t males cherish similar dreams?? Why are you so discriminatory????

Stop being so cruel to people. Your failures in personal life aren`t a good excuse enough to destroy other people`s dreams.

Cheer up, life is beautiful. Believe me.

should I expect burning of churches?

No, you could expect such events under PIS. When the bolsheviks are gone, the churches will stay as they are. After PiS rule, though, they will remain empty and will be sold out to become shopping or community centres. You can thank those gangsters and the black mafia for leading to that situation.

Life / Polish women who made amazing careers against patriarchal society [128]

Poland is the country still haunted by patriarchal traditions which in many cases can be quite discriminatory for women. Things are changing for better, though, coz Polish women have always fought for their rights, even in the darkest ages. Despite narrow-minded males` objections and obstacles.

The latest appointment by the Tusk gov to the position of the boss of Central Anticorruption Agency is Agnieszka Kwiatkowska-Gurdak.

Special Agent Agnieszka Kwiatkowska-Gurdak from the Bydgoszcz CBA delegation became the head of this service, which was announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Tuesday (December 19). According to our information, she is an officer with extensive investigative experience and is considered resistant to political pressure.

Life / Owning a house in true countryside of Poland - stories [692]

Amiga, do you remember what you wrote here in 2019, 28 August ???

Just heard on the radio that PiS goverment is introducing 3000 new public transport routes over the next six months, subsidised, to give many villages and rural areas , like the one Pawian lives in, a bus service for the first time, after brutal rationalisation from the former PO traitors. Good news for rural areas and villages. Old babcias will be able to hospital in the nearby town. Another win for poland and the polish people,

Do you remember what I replied?
This:

That`s BS, they only promised it but won`t really make it happen. Don`t fall for PiS` tricks - it is pure politics to win the elections. They will create one route or two of state bus transport to show on PiS TV and that will be all.

Can you guess who was right, as usual???? hahahaha

Yes, the latest statistics show that the length of public transport routes in the countryside got shorter under PIS, not longer.

Thank you , PiS gangsters, for your wonderful promises! Life seemed so much easier and better when we were fed them! hahahaha

It is impossible and you know about it. Courts in Poland are independent. PIS tried to change it by brutal force and intimidation but failed. Do you think anybody else will be more successful???? :):):):)

Pawian, read those three links I provided in my post #93 when you have more time.

Yes, I had read them before, the very hour those articles appeared. And they corroborate exactly what I said a few posts ago:

Some experts say they are, others say they aren`t.

E.g.,
Haste is not always a good advisor - said Ryszard Piotrowski, professor at the University of Warsaw. According to the lawyer, decisions regarding changes in public media raise some doubts. . Tomasz Siemiątkowski, professor at the Warsaw School of Economics.has a different opinion - The Minister of Culture and National Heritage had the right to do so without question - he said in an interview with TVN24.

You have probably have guessed by now whose opinion I prefer to stick to. :):):)

Quite frankly

The PiS swamp needs radical drying. Don`t bother about the methods, just check the results - watch the new evening news tonight. Although still basic technologically, it offers the message which Poles have been longing for for 8 years.

Methods vs effects comparison is the best way to deal with such personal doubts.

Puts in question

No, it doesn`t. Cheer up before Christmas - Poland is beautiful again. :):):)

turned into a fanatic catholic bigot after the nomination.

Now that she is gone, taking care of the balance in nature, I spent most of yesterday`s and Thursday`s classes using Christmas songs and carols for educational purposes. I haven`t done it for a few years to spare me trouble because to me doing songs with Polish students is more tiring than doing regular class.
