History / Pol-Shorpy Photo Thread [950]

Germans lost their homes

Don`t forget it was German decision to build a runway strip in the middle of Wrocław during the war. It entailed pulling down hundreds of buildings. So, it wasn`t only Soviets or Poles who destroyed the historical quarters.

News / Poland - A True Bastion and Defender of Free Speech [250]

That's a rather long post #74. Couldn't be arsed reading it

Good tactics. I also use it on various azholes in the forum who tend to post too long dissertations. Life is too short to waste it on their bs.

Hey, azholes! You know who I mean now! If you want to be read, write no more than 2, 3 sentences. That`s the max I can tolerate.

The one in the middle had a nickname Dog when he was an anti-system hippie in 1970s.

PS. Breaking news. PIS gangsters have just chosen the second chairman for the state TV board within 2 days. AmaSSSSSing!!! :):)

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1450]

So, the riddle in 1206 is still pending...

Meanwhile, let me show you my trad dish which you saw dozens of times....
Yet, with some variations now coz although I am conservative by nature, I get bored with it soon and need constant modification. :):):)

Tatar raw beef steak: this time I used our leek instead of onion. This yellow stuff is our pickled patison squash instead of pickled cucumber. The seafood addition isn`t usual canned sardines in oil but smoked mackerel fillet. And the slices of bread which I normally have fresh are fried (not toasted!).

Now, I spared you a riddle to guess the ingredients.

But I can`t resist asking this one - why did I use such replacements in fact? Forget this urge for modification.

before I walked out of that hospital from hell,

Why are you lying today? I perfectly remember how you praised the med care in Poland for being so friendly, quick and efficient when dealing with an American guy. And you were generally fascinated with Poland during your trip a few years ago. Why those lies now? To unnerve Torq???? :):):)

News / Polish final report on Smoleńsk aircrash [870]

then yes, it is correct -

I used a silly joke to express certain opinion which some people could have misunderstood.
In simple English, it wasn`t Russians who did.
It was Polish pilots who did, after being forced by their air force superiors, urged by President Kaczyński on board, pressed by his twin brother Jarosław Kaczyński in Warsaw, to land in Smolensk at any cost.

They hadn`t realised the cost of that stupid political bravado was their lives.

Today Jarosław is still haunted by the memories of his dead brother. But he pushed his own guilt out of his conscience and really seems to believe it was Tusk who did it.

No, Mr Kaczyński, it was you who sentenced your own brother after you ordered him to land in Smoleńsk and reach the Katyn Massacre Cemetery before the Tusk gov delegation could get there.

Life / Polish Christmas Carols - your favorites? [20]

The runner-up in my faves is The Triumphs of the Heavenly King
coz it is fast and energetic. You surely remember I love heavy metal and punk rhythms which are such.

Here performed by the singing/dancing folk ensamble Mazowsze

The triumphs of the king of heaven
descended from the high heaven,
and woke up the shepherds,
the guardians of their property,
with singing, singing, singing.
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to people below,
the Savior was born, the Redeemer of human souls on earth.
The Virgin Mary gave birth to the Eternal God without a parent,
to save us from hell, and to set us in heaven as palaces.

Language / Which books do native Polish people in Poland use to learn Polish? [72]

Pan Kleks is a a wizard and educator. He runs an academy for boys whose first names start with A - they learn unusual subjects and experience amazing adventures in real and magical world.

They have just released a film based on the story but with massive changes. E.g, the main boy protagonist, Adam, was turned into a girl - Ada. Amasing!!!! :):):)

The film has attracted mostly positive opinions so far.

Compare main characters in two adaptations: 1983 with Adam and 2023 with Ada:

Life / Do you know any specific Christmas traditions to be found only in Poland? [15]

Polish feel good films that can be played

Letters to M - a romantic comedy from 2011 set on Christmas Eve.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Letters_to_Santa_(film)

The film was positively received by both critics and the general public. It was also appreciated by Duncan Kenworthy, producer of Notting Hill and Love Actually, who said: The movie is fantastic. And as the audience I think it is both funny and poignant. It's made me feel a sudden craving for Christmas..

Later a few sequels were made.

Life / Polish Christmas Carols - your favorites? [20]

I like all of them but always get thrills hearing that one coz it is usually sung by Highlanders in their peculiar accent and their crazy folk instruments and shrill voices are so enchanting too:

And this mysterious word dyna in the chorus which I have never understood!

The star is burning for Jesus in the cloud, in the cloud
Joseph and Mary assist at his side, at his side

Hey, no dyna, dyna, God was born, child,
In Bethlehem, in Bethlehem

The ox and the donkey serve in pairs at the manger, at the manger
They roar, hum to the gentle person, the person

The shepherds ran with gifts, they ran. They ran
around the shed at midnight, they ran around

The angel of the Lord himself announced these wonders, these wonders,
which they had not heard as they were alive, as they were alive

Life / Do you know any specific Christmas traditions to be found only in Poland? [15]

so-called passing gifts which are left unopened

yes, exactly! I do it with all bottles of whisky I get from students and parents on the last day of school in June. I am not able to drink it so I pass it to others for various services.

Talking about presents:

Family members who live in different places but still within a driving distance visit each other to bring and take presents before Christmas.

Zwłoki kurczaka.

You always eat zwłoki unless you are a vegetarian. :):):):) I prefer straightforward approach - without beating about the bush.

BTW, there is a new riddle. What is it this kefir shake based on??? Warning: it isn`t what you guess by the look.

News / Britain - problem for Poland and Poles? [117]

An extensive interview with a Polish expert on British housing market which has gone to the dogs and is draining the assets of both the state and lodgers.

onet.pl/informacje/krowoderskapl/wielka-brytania-doprowadzila-do-katastrofy-mieszkaniowej-idziemy-jej-sladem/fkxxp9y,30bc1058

Main points:

In Great Britain, until the end of the 1970s, municipal construction dominated. This changed at the beginning of the government of Margaret Thatcher, who distributed municipal housing and changed the housing model to one similar to the one in Poland today.

It is based on rent from private owners and huge amounts of money allocated for rent subsidies or, for example, own contribution. A situation has arisen in which - says Dr. Marcin Galent from the Jagiellonian University - you can earn more by not building apartments than by building them.

Today, apartments in Great Britain are the smallest and most expensive among Western European countries
Housing expenses account for approximately 40 percent. family income. Back in the 1970s it was 20-25 percent. It was cheaper not only to rent, but also to buy your own house or apartment

Dr. Marcin Galent from the Jagiellonian University says: The British model of the housing market has led to a disaster. Ours is very similar.

A part of the interview:

If you haven't lived in the UK, it may be hard to believe, because we don't associate Great Britain with a place where life is bad or poor. More like a rich country where you go to earn better money.

I lived in Great Britain for three years. In different places. Usually those that are considered "the better ones". In Notting Hill, London, Cambridge, Oxford. These are islands of luxury, and yet when I saw the housing standards there, I was shocked. For various reasons, because, for example, I was used to having two panes of glass in the window and a radiator. And in England this is not obvious. The apartments are often in a dilapidated condition. And that's one thing. But the second thing is that it's getting worse. The standard is falling. The premises are getting smaller. The apartments decreased by 1/5 in a short time. The new ones feel like a dollhouse. If I have a staircase in Krakow, two people can pass each other on the stairs. In a new building in the UK this can be difficult. The apartments are miniature, but they are also crowded and overcrowded. It is standard that singles who cannot afford to buy anything of their own live in apartments intended for families. Within a decade, by 50 percent. The number of twenty-year-olds who do not have their own home has increased. Back in the 1980s, the average age of a new apartment buyer was 26, now it is 32. University graduates who start working often cannot even afford to rent an apartment, so it is common for their parents to subsidize their housing expenses. The scale is such that it has a name - it is called "Mommy's Bank", and young people are referred to as the "Rental Generation".

PIS gangsters still occupy state media buildings. They take turns every day. AmaSSing. :):):)

Here are 3 of them from today`s shift. The one on the right, with that most human face, is Ryszard Legutko, my professor of philosophy class at uni in 1980s. We, students of the English department, respected and looked up to him coz we knew he didn`t like communists, remained independent and kept away from marxist approach to philosophy. He had also graduated from English department in 1973 so additionally it gave good vibes to our meetings.

Today he sold his soul to the devil and supports PiS, the same bolsheviks he once used to oppose. He does it for huge cash which he is paid by the EU being a rightist member to the Euro Parliament. Money does`nt bring happiness but without money it is easier to run into bad luck, sort of. hahahaha

AmaSSing how decent people can go to the dogs during lifetime.
