Real Estate / Would you rent from me? [24]

if you and the tenant sign an agreement

There are a few different types of tenancy agreement. Depending on which one you choose, it can be much easier to get a tenant out. But it's still a headache.

" If the tenant does not return the premises, the owner is forced to go to court, because uniformed officers cannot step in. The whole case may take up to several months (and we must also remember about the period between November-March, when eviction cannot take place). All of this proves that the lessee may live in a premises long after the date on which the premises should have been returned. In this situation, the law puts the owner in a very disadvantageous position."

Real Estate / Approximate cost for interior finishing. [3]

How do you communicate this?

Just tell them. You're the client. You're paying for the service.

Sure if he also getting something from the products I'm buying...

You should have received a detailed quote with prices clearly set out for the service, labour costs and materials separately. I hope you didn't pay the full bill upfront.

What are the possible cost for interior finishing?

How long is a piece of string ........... depends on how much per sqm you pay for materials and what the labour costs are. If you shop around you can often get discounts by negotiating directly with the supplier. For example we bought solid oak flooring for our house from a wood supplier rather than a shop. Much better quality and good price. We used this guy:

drew-rem.pl/

With things like bathroom fittings, you can often negotiate a discount if you buy more than one item.

I suggest stick to your house cleaning profession

I don't object to your having a different viewpoint to mine. However, I do object to you telling lies. Disagree and tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about by all means but stop pretending that I'm a house cleaner. This is silly and dishonest. Disagree me with as the person I am, not the person you would like me to be. You tell a lot of lies about a lot of people on this forum just for the sake of being rude - and incidentally you are frequently wrong about things yourself and display a great deal of ignorance on numerous topics.

Real Estate / Would you rent from me? [24]

Maybe the deal can be that the person rents first for 5 years for a lower price the 3000 zl/month? Then buy it for a profit?

I notice in another post you mentioned that your home country is Sweden. That kind of arrangement may work there where everything is much more orderly but Polish renting culture is a bit rough and ready. You're very unlikely to find a tenant who will enter into such a complex (to them) arrangement and legal issues could arise if they stop paying the rent, which they could well do. It's quite common in Poland for tenants to default on rent and it's very difficult to evict them, especially if they have children.

if this is a thing in Poland first.

No, it isn't.

Real Estate / Would you rent from me? [24]

Very expensive for Olsztyn

Agree.

Maybe a family who wants save up for their own house would rent from me?

Your proposed rent is too high to allow an average family to save a deposit for their own house.

electricty prices are still high.

They're not that bad. If people keep their consumption to a low/moderate level there is a fixed, government guaranteed price at an affordable level.

UK, Ireland / Insuring & driving a car on French plates from UK to Poland [7]

so many symbols in the plates.

The KE stands for Kerry. There are 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland so depending on where the car was first registered you'll have the letters for the county on the plate. The full name of the county is written in Irish above the number. The numbers represent the year and whether the car was registered in the first half or second half of that year and the final digits show where it falls in the sequence of cars registered. Unlike Poland, the plates go with the car for life

would i be okay to use someone else's vehicle if they have AC or OC insurance.

You can check their insurance documents or they can call the insurance company and check. In Poland it's the car that's insured and not the driver, so it should be ok, but check first.

UK, Ireland / Is it good for Poland as Sinn Fein will win today in Northen Ireland [282]

I don't remember being scared. We loved ghost stories and they were always told on Halloween but we also played games and just had fun. I WAS terrified of the Banshee though. For some reason I had the idea that she'd kill me! Of course she's just a harbinger of death, she won't actually harm you.

But what happened in most cases was that Christians abandoned the old festivals and replaced them with the new Christian ones, simply keeping a few elements of the old and the Church discouraged observation of the Pagan rites and rituals. Ireland kept them and the Irish church did not discourage or forbid such practices. That's why my daily Mass-going grandmother still believed in the fairies and wouldn't do anything to anger them.

That's why you dress up, so that they'll think you're a spirit like them. The faeries are around that night as well because they live underground and they come up when the portal opens. Although they can be around at any time actually.

Read the article, it's very informative.

Why exactly did the Catholic Irish introduce this satanic holiday all over the world?

It's not Satanic. It is the night that the dead walk among the living but it has nothing to do with Satan. My grandmother used to leave chairs by the fire for the dead so that they could come in and warm themselves. It was a great night when we were kids. Every house had a party of some kind.

Unfortunately like so many things that the Irish brought with them when they emigrated, the Americans got hold of it and their weird version has spread all over the place.

News / Coronavirus in Poland - part 2 [595]

Perhaps with the vaccine the course would be milder.

To be honest, I've felt far worse with a few bouts of flu over the years. (I've never had a flu vaccine either.) I've had worse respiratory problems with flu, much higher temp etc. The difference with Covid was how persistent the cough was and how the general feeling of tiredness carried on for longer than with flu. I also lost my sense of taste for a few days - classic Covid. It's extremely weird not being able to taste anything.

News / Coronavirus in Poland - part 2 [595]

the vacines are not safe

I feel very sorry for the people in countries where vaccines were mandatory, also for older people in countries where they had a choice but were so worried and scared that they took the chance and were vaccinated. I wasn't vaccinated myself and I did catch Covid but not until November of 2021. The worst thing was the cough and for a long time afterwards my lungs didn't seem to function at their full capacity, maybe 80% of what they had been. They seem to be back to normal now.

hedgehog restricted itself mostly to fekking another hedgehog.

What? Hedgehogs stealing other hedgehogs?? How odd. Very wise however not to try stealing an elephant. Or are you referring to hedgehogs throwing other hedgehogs? Where? Fecking them over the hedge, the wall, the famous Polish fence?

Not going to let up on this one ever Pawian. Show respect for Hiberno-English. It's feck, not fekk and to feck something is to steal it or throw it. You can feck a person, but that would mean you threw them over something.

Study / School meals in Poland [145]

Yes, sort of. The 'bar mleczny' has become a trendy thing amongst hipsters etc. There's a kind of fashion for PRL stuff as a retro cool vibe. The gentrified milk bars aimed at that market are more expensive but still cheap enough. Then there are the 'jedzenie domowa' type places for ordinary working people who want a filling lunch. I don't know what you personally consider cheap, but they're affordable. The food is ok, if you're hungry it will fill you and that's about it in my opinon. It's acceptable.

I've eaten in this one, food is very basic, quite salty. Interesting article:

In Poland putting a cross in the box means YES. In Brit/US it means NO. :):):)

Actually Pawian, that's not correct. I don't know about the US but on UK ballot papers you indicate your choice by putting an 'x' in the box.

Language / Is it possible to master the Polish language fluently for a non-Polish speaker? [120]

I recognize a Ukrainian fluent in Polish immediately by his accent.

Ironically speakers of other Slavic languages have a problem with the accent perhaps more than an American or a Brit. It's because of the very similarity and yet difference between other Slavic languages and Polish.

Genealogy / Help Translating 1880s Marriage Bann (Chicago - Polish) [24]

It seems that the scribe heard "w Rościborze" where they had told him "we Włościborze".

Hi there Ziem :) Nice to see you back these days. That's a brilliant piece of insight into the confusion about the place name. I couldn't understand how he got an R out of Włościbórz.

@AugustaBlvd that's a wonderful piece of research you did. You show typical Polish dogged persistence in the face of apparently insurmountable odds :)) You really are to be congratulated. Researching Polish family history is not a straightforward business, very difficult and you did a great job - Gratulacje!

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

Can someone explain to me if there is any realistic scenario where PiS manage to hold on to power?

Most unlikely. They can't form a government on their own - they don't have enough of a majority. and as they've written the book on how to lose friends and alienate people, they're unlikely to be able to swing a coalition.

they were cases of misinterpreting the law,

The law regarding something as serious as this should be concise and not open to misinterpretation. That in itself is a massive failure. There have actually been at least three cases and at least one of them mirrors what happened in Ireland a few years ago when the mother died of sepsis.

Language / What are the best professional reasons for learning Polish? [16]

Do you think it is objectively worth learning if I want to work in EU institutions?

are "Poland specialists" needed in Europe

The only reason to learn it for professional reasons is if you want to work as a translator or perhaps an interpreter. In that case you'd be translating from Polish to your native language, French.

Real Estate / Advertise on property prices and how to... [2]

Google Translate is your friend :) Learn to use it to navigate Polish websites. You have to search for these things in Polish to get the details you need. Here's a really useful site:

kb.pl/cenniki/budowa-domu-_c/

And here's an article about finishing a shell/surowy house:

extradom.pl/porady/artykul-ile-kosztuje-wykonczenie-domu

It's a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' type question. Finishing costs depend on quality of the materials you choose and the labour cost. Be warned that labour adds a huge amount to the cost. It can easily equal the cost of the materials.

How many Polish women died in any given recent year because of the Polish abortion laws?

You often ask for specific figures. So supply one yourself on this occasion. What's an acceptable number of dead women/mothers - bearing in mind that the life of the unborn child is frequently lost on these occasions too.

Because you should give specific.

Exactly. The wording of referendum questions has to be precise. People have to understand what it is they are actually voting for or against. It can't be vague and general.

Because the Irish don't want them.

Wrong as usual.

the most boring poster ever.

If you find me boring and want to have a lively discussion about politics, domestic or international, see how you get on with other Irish people. Here's a statement by an Irish person back in 2021:

"The Party of Lincoln" is dead, but that died when Barry Goldwater and then Ronald Reagan became Presidential candidates."

Agree or disagree?

If you want to discuss US politics with an informed, opinionated Irish public, try your luck on the forum linked below. I've linked you to the thread on US politics. You should be able to cope with that one.

these are not Polish metaphores: the article is on a German website

It's written by a Pole. He's a professor at the University of Warsaw.

A pity that the result of the election is inconclusive this morning - it's now a case of who will manage to form a coalition. Fingers crossed for a brighter future!
