Life / Being a Jew in modern-day Poland; Israeli Jew who is of Polish descent [269]

@f stop they can learn from the bad things

They? What exactly do you want "them" to learn? What exactly do you want "them" to do?

Anyway, this attitude is exactly what your problem might be in Poland, if you're really thinking about spending any considerable time there. Which, honestly, I don't think you do.

This is just another fishing expedition, ending at a very predictable place.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

"The color of green eyes does not result simply from the pigmentation of the iris. Rather, its appearance is caused by the combination of an amber or light brown pigmentation of the stroma, given by a low or moderate concentration of melanin, with the blue tone imparted by the Rayleigh scattering of the reflected light."

Travel / Over staying 90 day limit in Poland (do they even know I'm here?) [18]

This is a wild guess, but I'll venture that because you're an American, they probably will not care.

so, if you get an overzealous official and they ask you what day you arrived, I would probably tell the truth. If acting confused does not work. ;)

I don't think the immigration authorities rely on the passport stamps to keep track of you. My passport does not get stamped everytime I travel.

In some situations, like Americans in Cuba, passports do not get stamped as a rule. But that does not mean that Cubans don't know you're there.

So, beware.

Remember that all your passport info was entered before you boarded the plane in US, then electronic passenger manifesto was submitted to your country of entry.

Love / Do Polish men make good husbands? [106]

Strong in what sense?

in this sense:

Otherwise he won't stand a chance with me.

(making clear what's acceptable and what's not, instead of hoping for a miraculous change)

Law / Laws on walking a dog in Polska [67]

Anthropomorphism - that's attributing human characteristics to animals. We get started on that with childrens' stories and grow out of it, mostly, as we get older.

Every time someone tells me their dog is their best friend, I think to myself "you should keep that a secret...".
Your dog will protect you, and try to do what you want to the best of its ability because you are its meal ticket.
If that what one requires of a best friend.. then no wonder so many people get more worked up by hearing about abused animals than about abused people.

Law / Laws on walking a dog in Polska [67]

had the perverted sexual urge to shoot my dog

It's obvious that you love your dog very, very much.
To balance that, it would be good if you had some empathy for people that might be scared sh!tless by a 40 pound dog running up and jumping on them.

wait, on the public path, you could not control your dog, so she's the unreasonable one?
Sheesh, dog license should require a short common sense test.

Food / Smalec - how to make it? [53]

besides spreading it (thinly!) on fresh rye bread, I found many other uses for smalec; cook with it! It makes rice taste better, sauteed greens, cabbage, broccoli sprouts... even scrambled eggs.

Life / Do you think that Polish people are rude? [951]

Here are some Russian tips on traveling to America that nicely sum up some of the cultural differences. Even though they are for Russians, they seem to apply to Poles as well:

"US etiquette requires that you smile in each and every situation. If you want to travel to America, be prepared to give a smile not only to friends and acquaintances, but also to all passers-by, in shops, to the staff at the hotel, police on the streets, etc.

"US etiquette also forbids lamenting the troubles of life, or sharing your problems with others. Sharing in this country can only be positive emotions - sorrows and frustrations are impermissible. In the US you only complain to acquaintances in the most extreme cases. Serious problems are for close friends and relatives only.

You making too much of it. I'd tell him that I didn't volunteer to take the pictures, or, I'll send you a bill, and laugh it off.

Life / Babcia or Busha - any social class difference? [359]

I suspect that the resurrecting of this thread could be a tireless work of a loving grandson, trying to keep the memory of his babusia alive.

But dude, your busha lied! :)

Life / What's the best Polish radio station? [36]

Merged: Polish radio station on the internet, in Polish

today I discovered a Polish radio and have been listening to it most of the day.

[polskieradio.pl/Player?id=-3]

And I must say I'm impressed. Today they had alternative music segment, panel discussion on gypsies with appropriate live music, heavy metal segment (during which the dj pleaded for people to stop burning the rainbow and embarrassing everyone), then they went a little overboard with avant garde music, but now they're reading Tartar stories, pretty good.

News is short, sweet and seemingly unbiased, no commercials that I noticed.

Life / Halloween vs All Saints' Day in Poland [48]

I just wanted to add that I see costumes around here that take a lot of thought and work. It's almost like an art that only lasts one night. This year I noticed elaborate face paintings. My friends are thinking about their next year's costumes already. I wish I could post pictures here..
