News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

More and more articles suggest they have decided to start an antiUkrainian campaign to win the nationalist voters so that they won`t vote for Konfederacja.

Nationalists won't vote for PiS. PiS spat them in the face for too long for them to now fall for their silly pre-election tricks. They will vote for Konfederacja (a reasonably pro-Russian party). This is about something else.

This is about PiS' iron electorate - their most faithful voters.

Where do they come from, Pawian? They come from Закерзоння, to use this lovely Ukrainian word :) The entire Закерзоння is the bastion of PiS. The opposition has nothing to seek there. Unfortunately for PiS - and fortunately for Poland - Polish people living in those "ancient Ukrainian lands", long-suffering and patient as they are, got sick and tired of the constant, unconditional support for Mr Zelensky (who, among other things, likes to grant UPA veterans the titles of Hero of Ukraine).

Now, PiS realised that they are about to lose a large chunk of their iron voter base, and decided to play this silly "diplomatic conflict with Ukraine" theatre. If they win the elections, the licking of Ukrainian arses will resume with double strength. That's why they have to go - and with this you will surely agree? :)

The only people that vote for PSL are (...) the small town bourgeois

This is correct to some extent but I wouldn't say "only people". PSL definitely has to go back to their folk ethos, go back to their Witos-deep roots. They have to reconnect with peasants, the salt of Polish earth. That's why rejecting Agrounia and sticking with Hołownia - the weirdest guy in Polish politics since... since... no, I'll just say the weirdest guy in Polish poltics - was such a ridiculous own goal; almost suicidal.

they were puppets of the Imperial Russia

They were ordinary people: farmers, drivers, school teachers. They had no more power to decide whom their country fights than their American or Polish counterparts.

Fekk your fake grandpa and his toy tank.

Jesus Christ...

...I mean really, pawian. Wtf is wrong with you???

Polish nationalists openly or secretly support Russia and Putin.

Polish patriots support what is best for Poland but even the occasional nationalists among them (a minority) don't have your level of hatred. Wtf???

Why so many bloody parties?

Such a specialist in Polish matters as you should now that "where there are two Poles, there are three opinions", and four political parties. :)

History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [515]

They compared fighting in Warsaw to Stalingrad coz they encountered such stubborn resistance.

And to think that in the initial phase of the Uprising in many units only 1 in 20 insurgents had any firearm. :(

They had the biggest support in last elections in cities, not the countryside.

Which Kosiniak-Kamysz described as intentional shift of the party towards a "broader voter base". The sad reality, however, is that PiS simply owned them in the countryside.

The alliance with Agrounia was their only chance to win the peasants back. It's now gone. :-/

What is they know sth that we dont`?

They have their cherished opinion polls and act accordingly.

The problem is that I bet Agrounia is severely undervalued in those polls, as opposed to Polska 2050. Besides, what does Hołownia (he is neither a peasant nor a member of intelligentsia) have to do with traditional folk party?

he viewed them as a reactionary force

The most reactionary ever. Deeply religious, ferociously stubborn (if that even collocates), distrustful of change, ostracizing anyone trying to "do things in a different way". But also humble, tough and long-suffering.

In other words, the best choice for difficult times.

PSL is PSL they'll align with anyone for a small taste of power

Yes, this hunger for power is ever more evident with PSL. But still, they are peasants: commonsensical, down to earth, never leaning towards any extremes - a decent centrist party. Whom else to vote for in these crazy times?

But I can't get over their alliance with Hołownia... there is something seriously dodgy about this guy.

News / Russian criticism of Poland - Soviet war memorial removal [325]

We talked about it tens of times.

... and I thought we agreed that monuments of Lenin, Stalin, leaders and generals should go but those of ordinary soldiers should be left alone. They fought hand-in-hand with our troops against the common enemy and 600,000 of them gave their lives taking Poland back from the nazis.

44 years of an unwanted military and economic 'alliance'

It might have been unwanted but during this alliance Polish population grew from 23 million in 1945 to 40 million in late 1980s. Also, Polish industry, farming and science developed to levels unreached before.

But this is a subject for a different thread, I suppose.

I suppose a new monument will be built that doesn't glorify the CCCP (even indirectly).

What do you mean? Removing the fallen soldiers from the monument, sort of like Yezhov was removed from the photo with Stalin? I don't think I like such idea of falsifying history very much.

they weren't all that Polish before WWII

But they have been very Polish for the last 80 years or so.

Now, when Putin is undermining the Polish right to those lands with his statements about "Stalin's gift", PiS is indirectly doing the same by razing the monuments of soldiers - including Polish ones - who fought for those lands. :-/

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

I am so annoyed with PSL these days. They had unique chance to break the alliance with this weirdo Hołownia and take in Agrounia. It would win them immense number of votes in the countryside and incorporate the new peasant movement (similar somewhat to Samoobrona). They would easily get over the 5% treshold for single party this way; with Hołownia, the 8% for coalition is doubtful.

Thanks to this, PiS will again win in the countryside. What was Kosiniak-Kamysz thinking of??? :-/

Razing this monument is pure kurewstwo towards the fallen soldiers, their families and generations of Poles who have lived in Polish Szczecin.

By razing this monument PiS is indirectly undermining the Polishness of Ziemie Odzyskane. Mind boggling.

Also, they hate Szczecin, Gdańsk and the entire Pomerania, because they lose every election here...

1

... they would prefer the entire Poland to be Podlasie and Podkarpacie, so that they could rule forever. There is a nice surprise in store for them in October.

one of them, probably the upper one, was of the Soviet soldier.

How do you know? There were no insignia...

... and if only one was Soviet, then why was the entire monument, including the Polish soldier, demolished?

Besides, this is what happened in history - both Soviet and Polish soldiers died in the battle for Szczecin. Razing this monument is pure kurewstwo towards the fallen soldiers, their families and generations of Poles who have lived in Polish Szczecin.

PiS is at it again - the monument of Polish and Soviet soldiers, fallen in the battle for Dąbie (Altdamm) was demolished...

1

2

... in their blind hatred they didn't notice that the monument was commemorating Polish soldiers as well, and the soldier's sculpture didn't have any Soviet insignia on it. The battle was a very important strategic step on the way to capture Szczecin.

The monument reminded three (or even four) generations of Poles about the battle, thanks to which they can live, work and study in POLISH Szczecin. Now it's gone. Will this idiocy ever end? :(

News / Americans incite hatred towards Russia in Polish media [75]

The US has been sending boatloads of money to China

Well, yes. It was done because the US thought that when the Chinese become powerful enough and wealthy enough, they will turn into Americans.

Turns out they're still Chinese.

So now that America noticed her mistake, China is a mortal (or even the mortalest) enemy. Keep up to date, Novi.

You can settle in Russia

Well, despite the war, the sanctions and the crisis, Russia would still be a huge improvement from Niger.

People in many parts of Africa have good reasons to dislike the so-called collective West.

History / 1920 Germany Lands in exchange for the Eastern Lands? [31]

adding some millions of people that are Bradley your blood relations should not be seen as some tragedy.

Of course it wasn't a tragedy. Neither in the XIV century nor in 2022. And I suppose in both cases we have Russia to thank for - a kind benefactor whom we wrongly consider an enemy.

You should definitely consider a career in diplomacy, Bobi.

Where does all this love for the Czechs come from.

I suppose it's envy. Great beer, the capital city largely untouched by war, no partitions, uprisings or Christ-of-nations-level suffering... relaxed attitude, common sense, better football and hockey teams. We would probably get bored being Czechs very quickly but no Pole would refuse being a Czech for a year or so, as Pawian said. :)

Poznań

Quite right. Good, old, honest Poznań.

And, of course, after the war we got Gdańsk and Wrocław to wipe our tears with. Yes, it could have ended worse than it did.

not acquire some small bunch of forest dwelling Samogitians, but the original Lithuanians

Wow! You can distinguish between Samogitians and real Lithuanians! I thought only Poles could do that nowadays. :)

tongue kissing some Czech

Now, that is taking the game a bit too far.

where I said Lithuania was stronger than Poland?

I thought that's what you meant by Lithuania "giving us the muscle". If that's not what the phrase means, then I apologise. You know this vulgar tongue we use here better than I do.

And, of course, you are right: this is pure fantasy but it is a very useful fantasy. It allows us to shift the blame for our failures and partitions on somebody else. Very comforting psychologically.

History / Polish Army Day [77]

Polish army had its day on 9th May, to celebrate the end of the war.

Which was probably the only army in the world to celebrate on the day of a lost war.

Before the war the heart and soul of Poland was defined by four cities: Warsaw, Cracow, Lwów and Wilno. Warsaw lay in ruins, Lwów and Wilno were taken away from us, and only Cracow was left (although with a "nice" communist addition of Nowa Huta). We lost 3 limbs out of 4. :-/ The population loss was horrendous, the country was robbed naked and destroyed, and we had "visitors" for about 45 years (yes, Soviets were not all that bad but it was an occupation nonetheless).

The fact that Poland recovered and is the country she is today is nothing short of miracle.

Lithuania is what gave you the muscle

Are you kidding me? Poland was the stronger one in the union.

Imagine if all this energy, all those armies, all the money etc. went west instead of east! Berlin today would have more than just Polish name to remind us of its Slavic past.

And even if we only got as far as our current western border - without these lands there would be no Prussia (the main engine behind partitions).

Czechs were closer to us ethnically, linguistically and culturally - we should have entered into union with them and go west instead of going east with Lithuanians.

History / 1920 Germany Lands in exchange for the Eastern Lands? [31]

Poland has a significantly stronger connection to the East, than it does to what it lost in the West many centuries ago.

I blame the union with Lithuania.

They drew us into countless wars in the eastern steppes where we bled out and wasted our resources instead of consolidating our lands in the West. Without Poland's Union with Lithuania there would be no rise of Prussia and no partitions, and today we would have similar borders but larger population and GDP (basically Czechia on steroids).
