Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

Really? I always thought it was Polish.

Well it exists in German too and German to Polish is more likely than the reverse.

any idea of the answer to post 802?

To take on an impossible task? or to try to do something difficult without enough training/education?

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

limiting the numbers of those who want to come to Europe to actually work in favour of those who come here to live on benefits

I'm sure that will be the result - and by changing the numbers of up to the minute market needs they're guaranteeing that a large number will end up unemployed and undeportable... dysfunctional policy.

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

An example of the type of contradiciton that will end the EU (more's the pity)

wiadomosci.wp.pl/francja-zamyka-granice-limity-dla-imigrantow-ekonomicznych-6443177751647873a

Presumably this is only about non EU citizens, but running an immigration policy on a year to year market basis is insane and guaranteed to fail.

Poles

Crow, doing his best to kill yet another thread with his infantile Serbian pablum.

Polish forums did not die with a bang, but with a whimper of Serbian nonsense and sexually frustrated trolls trying to harass female posters.

Such a pity....

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

I think it will probably collapse under the weight of its own contradictions by then... and Poland spent 45 years staring down the USSR and it was the Soviets who blinked first.... the EU isn't really that scary in comparison.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 2 [1680]

now I need to know where in Lithuania,

Can't help you there, I've only been in Lithuania once for work and didn't go to any museums... and I know very little of AM.

Litwo, ojczyzno moja!.

Except that Mickiewicz's Litwa was not the same thing as the modern country of Lithuania... (although IIRC he was a Polonized ethnic Lithuanian from an area that is now part of Belarus)

Off-Topic / Random movies (not Polish) proposed by forum users [95]

Afraid the last "great" Russian film I saw was "Oblomov"

Unfinished piece for player piano (by the same director) is much, much better.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/An_Unfinished_Piece_for_Mechanical_Piano

The greatest ever Russian movie, however, is Andrei Rubleev, a three hour plotless, black and white, fictionalized biography of a 15th century icon painter (almost nothing is known of his life)

It's really one of the crowning achievements of movie art and it's impossible to recommend it too highly (it works better in a theater than in a living room). The early violent sequences are harrowing, but the final sequence about a young bell-maker dealing with the unexpected death of his father is incredibly moving.

News / Scandals, conflicts, tensions, arguments - real life examples from Poland [543]

how about

No, PO was more responsible for that. If half the charges against PO had been true then Poland would still be mired in a deep recession.... economies just don't improve that rapidly on their own.

Oh and Banaś was buddy buddy with one of the kingpins of the VAT mafia that PiS campaigned against so.... hypocrites.

keeping the kebab and pedalstwo

Well you'll be happy to know that PiS members in the EP refused to vote in favor of a resolution condemning repression against gay people in Uganda (including the introduction of capital punishment).

But that actually makes them closer to kebab governments like Saudi Arabia or Iran... great company....

jumped on PO straight away as if that was any argument

What else do PiS supporters have? They can't point to any real accomplishments and deflect any criticism by squawking 'PO bad! PO bad! PO bad!!!!!'

I never heard of the Banaś guy before

This admission does not make you sound terribly well... informed....

And in other news.... it seems that Marian "Mack Daddy" Banaś, PiS's idea of an honest man is not... exactly..... that....

News / PiS` magic tricks - the first budget without deficit in Poland [39]

And.... the budget without a deficit is dead.... dead, dead, dead.

And... it appears that it was never a real possibility due to PiS desperate juggling things around while giving out kiełbasa wyborcza...

Cue a chorus of PiS supporters to chime in with 'but PO is worse!' or to maintain a dignified silence as they hope reality can be kept at bay for a while longer

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

I was there in the early 80s?

The friend who told me that had lived in Berlin in the mid to late 1990s... he also said he didn't know a single person over age 20 so with married co-habitating parents (all kids of single moms or parents separated and/or divorced) He said (at that time) Berlin was a city of individuals, not families.

Capital cities are always a bit out of step with the rest of the country...

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

the EU is so popular in Poland then though....

Yes/no polls tend to lose the nuances. As I've written before, a large majority of Polish people are in favor of membership but for mostly instrumental reasons

-ability to work abroad for better money

-economic development aid (not called that, but... that's what it is)

-some check on local government excesses (note the high number of post-communist countries toward the top)

There is, however, no... sentimental feeling (of the type that many Germans seem to have toward the EU) and there's no desire to subvert Polish identity to a larger European identity (I remember being told by someone who had lived in Germany that none of the younger people he knew wanted to be German - they wanted to be 'Europeans' first and foremost).

The real lead here however is France - more negative toward the EU than Greece! More negative toward the EU than the UK (which voted to leave....)

What's up there? The Center is not holding....

News / PiS candidates are losing positions in EU Parliament. Will they keep power in Poland? [358]

Nothing to offer just obstruction,

sounds like PiS, point to a single program of theirs that requires expertise and/or long term planning to carry out that actually happened or wasn't a disaster.... throwing how much money away on insane Smolensk 'investigations'? cutting down Białowieża? Poorly conceived school 'reform' with a doubled year clogging up the corridors? The roads they haven't built? The apartments they haven't built? The airport boondoggles they're planning (like expensive updating of an airport no one wants to use?) Appointing people with mafia connections to monitor government activities?

They're all mouth and no bacon and like a circus pony they have one trick - giveaways.

News / PiS candidates are losing positions in EU Parliament. Will they keep power in Poland? [358]

Will PSL be happy with 4 more years in opposition

At this point they're happy to still exist... so opposition is not the worst option. And PiS have a track record as unreliable partners (who's worked with them who hasn't regretted it?)

I think Schetyna's days are numbered, in pictures he looks like a turkey before thanksgiving who wonders why everyone is so excited....

The big question is the internal divisions in PiS, the Gowin and Ziobro factions are larger than they were before and JK's lackluster reaction to the election might have the same effect that dumping a bunch of blood in the water has on sharks...

Unless something major happens we're past peak PiS... they've yet to pull off a project that requires expertise or long term planning (the closest is the educational reform that is clogging up highschools). As I've said... it's partly a pyrrhic victory

Do you equate yourself with ET now?

He's trying to distract the conversation from the topic.... ignore the sad old desperately lonely fool...

Back on topic: I'm wondering how much longer JK's heart is going to be in it. He is not as engaged as he was even earlier this year.... the term 'pyrrhic victory' comes to mind...
