Life / Is Polish church involved in politics too much? [137]

There is an interesiting article by Terlikowski in today's Rzeczpospolita in which he says the Polish bishops are leading the RCC in Poland to a suicide (as he puts it). And Terlikowski is very very very far from being an atheist, a Liberal or a Leftist.

They are swindlers.

I once knew a lady who told meme the fortune teller she went to see was about 90% accurate in predicting her future life.

One Bosak won't be enough

He won't. In addition his looks are those of a school-boy who was left in class to repeat his term as he wasn't good enough to get a promotion. I wonder if that other never-fully-grown clown, Janusz Korwin-Mikke is with them still. Basically, Konfederacja are boys w krótkich majteczkach (didn't Bosak take part in the "Dancing with the Stars" TV show?) who think of themselves as being capable to run a country while in reality they are not capable of running a night club.

A bunch of delusional clowns, so to speak.

I wonder how people would react if Konfederacja got into power

You don't have to worry about this. Konfedercja, despite Bosak's dreams, will NEVER become a major political force in Poland. They are simply too ideological to make it to that end. Readiness for compromise is a necessity in politics and if a party is not prepared to achieve some now and again, it may either finish in the dustbin or remain on the political outskirts for ever..

Who would have taugh that Konfederacja will find its advocates in form of an old Scottish unionist and a young Polish feminist

You've gladly omitted the part where she said she'd be prepared to vote Konfederacja only when a lobotomy was performed on her.

Does Duda or JK really think Trump or the USA want to antagonize Putin on behalf of Poland?

People are being fed with many myths in Poland. One of them is that Trump is very sensitive to Poland's role in the world and this sensivity has been gained thanks to Duda and his party. But it's not only PiS which are so happy to promote such myths. The roots of the conviction that Poland is something special to the world goes back to the 19th century when our great poets of the time seeing Poland's gloomy reality of being occupied by foreign powers had developed the idea of Poland's messianic role in the world.

In the real world, Trump is skillful enough to sell and buy Duda and PiS a hundred times round without them even noticing it or noticing it only after it is too late. And yes, without the USA, the NATO alliance would be a joke, but people like Ironside will never realize that having been preoccupied for so long with searching for "Soviets" in Poland at the same time living comfortably in the so-called "rotten" West.

I really don't understand why the ranting on brat Lewandowski's conections to Serbia or brat Biedroń's links with Biedronka (which is a Portugese rather than a Sarmatian enterprise) has been left in this thread, a thred which has a very precise title that has nothing to do either with either brat Lewandowski in the context of Serbia or brat Biedroń in the context of the store chain Biedronka.

Many posts are constantly being removed from threads under much less trivial pretexts, but this one happily stays on.

It seems that the plan to pick up Bosak's electorate has backfired very badly.

Bosak's people are aware that PiS would be happy to devour Konfederacja on a first occasion. That's why they say they would not support Duda in the second round. It is the essence of poseł Dziambor's comment for Rzeczpospolita. It is not what Amiga500 says: that Dziabor only represents a faction within Konfederacja. When they say their supporters should abstain from the second tour, they actully mean them staying at home rather than voting for Duda. They will obviously not go that far as to support Trzaskowski in the second round. Konfederacja leaves the choice to their voters and their most obvious choice would be staying at home if their leader tells them not to support any of the contenders.

The 38-34% in favour of Trzaskowski only shows how disgusted they are with PiS and their run for a one-party state in Poland. I think Konfedercja's long-term strategy is to take away as many more rightist voters as they can from PiS and convince them to support Konfederacja. It is another reason for not voting Duda in the second round, so as not to strenghten PiS.

Another option which they might consider would be PiS offering them positions in the government in case they support Duda.and Duda wins. PiS could have then thrown out Gowin and his Porozumienie or whatever it is called and adopt Bosak in his place. But this scenario is less likely in my view.

Bosaks statement about not supporting PO

This is only half of the truth. The other half in his statemnt is that they won't support Duda in the second round either. If you want to promote half-thruths on this forum, it is not the right place for this, I'm afraid.

A very interesting analysis on the position of Konfedercja in the current electoral turmoil in Poland can be found in today's Rzeczpospolita:
rp.pl/Wybory-prezydenckie-2020/306179911-Konfederacja-nie-poprze-nikogo.html

Artur Dziambor, an MP for Konfederacja, says Duda's re-election will strengthen Kaczyński's dictatorship in Poland. PiS wants to stir by the electoral law and also has other projects that are dangerous. A victory for PO means an ever-lasting conflict with PiS resulting in pushing other minor parties aside. This is why Konfedercje won't indicate to its voters whom they might support in the second round - concludes poseł Artur Dziambor.

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [676]

Slovak girls are mostly hot, Czech ones in Prague are mostly meh. Very Germanic-like.

What is "meh" in your dictionary?

The West Slavs are pretty much indistinguishable in terms of genetics.

The Czech have much more Celtic and Germanic ingredients than the Polish.

Real Estate / Buying land in Warsaw, Poland and the following [14]

Not at all. It is indeed "budowlana", so you originally got it right!

I'm not particularly well acquainted with the subject, but I think there is this 'działka budowlana' first, so you have to formally transform any other type of land into this one, and then you may apply for a 'pozwolenie na budowę' or whatever they call it.

she's more effective

Indeed, Georgette IS a powerful woman in Poland. I like her as a person (and as a woman) very much.

they've been told to back down, judging by the very sudden change in tone.

Peut-être this was her job, but on the other hands those PiS clowns must have realized they've gone too far with their Adolph-like comments towards the LGTB people and that it may harm Duda's election results

Latest from Warsaw: PiS candidate Andrzej Duda is going to put a new electoral proposal on the table soon. Observers say the proposal is expected to be a major breakthrough in the run for presidency and may even bring a landslide victory for Duda in the first round of the election.. If Duda wins, it is going to be :

500 zloty for every Pole, at home or abroad, infected with corona virus

Good news from the chapel situated in Węgliska near Łańcut. The retired priest Józef Kot said during the mass on Sunday: - Let God make everyone vote for Andrzej Duda. One of the parishioners, Monika, did not feel amused with that, so she went to see the chief parish priest to tell him about the incident. - You may go with it to the press or TV - she heard in reply.

The rzeszów-news.pl website then tried to contact both priests, but none of them answered the query. - There is no political activity on the Church premises in Poland - commented PiS MP Kazimierz Gołojuch who also attended the mass. - The priest is an ailing person who might have said a word too many and that is all there is to it.

It's worth reading, as it gives a clear warning to Duda that it's time to back off on the subject.

Indeed, the subject has already been so much exploited that it sounds like a broken record now. On the other hand, this may simply mean that PiS has run out of steam if it needs to call back to such themes.

Massive boondoggle projects that aren't need or wanted.

What they need that exavation of the Vistula Spit for? A project that will do more harm than benefit surely ...

Thanking you in anticipation of your kind indulgence, I remain your humble servant, Atch :)

Now, is this Irish irony or has this forum slided down to an unprecedented level of bootlicking now?

Study / School meals in Poland [145]

For the ones in need, yes.

If parents pay for the meals, are they free to children?

Kids need lots of fat for their brains to develop properly.

Eating fat is not so dangerous at all given that fat does not dominate your diet. As soon as the propaganda on reducing fat to the extreme or eliminating it completely - succeded in the US, the number of overweight or obese people started to rise sharply after people decided to replace fat with carbohydrates. Fat isn't the culprit at all and cutting on it in the diet actually makes things worse.

growing number of obese children all over the developed world

They consume more carbohydrates (sugar in all forms including bread) and move around less.

History / Origin and meaning of Polish city names? [3]

Warszawa is a name createdon the name of a person, in this case the person was Wars or Warsz, hence the originalname of the location --> Warsz-owa (possession of Wars, village of Wars).

Kraków is a very old name, first recorded in 965, but it certainly existed long before that year.

Toruń is a re-polonized German name (Thorn) which in turn was a germanized Polish name (Tarnina or Tarnow)

place Monotrosiska

Sounds like a name in Lithuania. But the prefix Mono- seems to be flawed.

Could perhaps be Mościszki. Either a village in Greater Poland or a village in Lithuania (presently: Mostiškės).

It's understandable that the emphasis is not on keeping up with fashionable ideas

I totally agree with this. First, in the so-called "rotten West" they invented snacks, doughnuts, coca-cola and all sorts of junk-food unknown in Poland for a long time and now they complain of a three-course dinner/lunch served to kids in Poland. They count the intake of calories and yet completely forget that kids play around quite a lot and exercise (except for those who sit at the computer all the time) much more than adults.

As for salt, I was once served mushed potatoes (or whatever they were called ) as part of the main course in a hospital canteen in England and I just couldn't swallow a single bite of it. I had to put the stuff aside telling them I was not hungry even if I was as hungry as a wolf at that moment.
