History / Recommended Poland's history books [257]

I remember reading Count Adam Zamoyski's excellent book and something that stood out for me was when he wrote that if people had listened to King Stanislaw, Poland would have emerged from the Napoleonic Wars in a similar situation to Belgium.

Do you have one in Poland?

There are quite a few, plus streets named after him in every major city.

If there's a company name and web address.

And if there is, most people would see that not the licence plate.

I personally think it's humanising the victim.

You've got a point however where dead kids are concerned I prefer not to, even if, as Paw said, the name is out of the bag.

It started with "Baby P".

DO RADCY

Sweet but like all vanity plates, essentially tacky, vulgar, and give that they aren't expensive, frankly meaningless.

Yeah, why women wouldn't want to live under anti-women laws, how weird of them

Crikey Paulina. You've summed it up in one excellent sentence and you've done it so well I'll borrow that sentence for use elsewhere.

Please think about going into politics. I'd vote for you.

the idiotic peasants will get butthurt about having some mild discomfort

You mean people whop work ten hour days making the food you eat, the clothes you wear and cleaning the streets you walk on, all for sh!t wages and a hard life.

No wonder they're 'butthurt'.

Okay, I agree, fu*ck those

Why "f*ck" them? Capitalism does that already.

Why not scrap hokey 'b2b' contracts and give them proper jobs?

If they want to make money, let them go abroad

Too capitalistic. There's enough money in society for that to be irrelevant. Nevertheless, some of us do go abroad for a better life including at least half of the regular posters on this forum.

let's equalize everyone - but only down!

Why 'down'?

Life / What is the percentage of dog owners in Poland who clean after their dogs? [7]

The city set up in Katowice bag dispenser in parks

In Warsaw, I see people having arguments all the time over this.

Nor are alcoholics.

But how would they know if someone entering a park is an alcoholic? Do electrolyte tests on the way in just in case the old lady walking her jamnik likes to have half a bottle of Sloneczny Brzeg for breakfast?

B2B

There's a golden chance to end so-called 'b2b'. Hopefully the government or their successors will do that. Let workers be workers, and let them get the full fruits of their labour, both directly through decent wages or indirectly through a decent health system, good publicly owned infrastructure and a stable society free from people making a fast buck from us all and running off with it.

And take money from

You still don't get it.

that they will be much better off in the West.

As we can see from the 'b2b' crapola, Poland is economically and politically 'the west' too and if you think costs are lower in, say, the Home Counties or the Randstadt or the Ile de France than Poland you should either get out more or ideally do the opposite.

B2B

Almost always a fake term used disingenuously. A business is a business and a person is a person.

A government on the left (unlike the new one) ought to stop those 'b2b' scams hard and quickly.

Preferably 75% tax for everyone above the national average

Too high, however if the richest evaded tax less, there would be less need to get the revenue from further down.

Another example of capitalism screwing you over,

Grabbing other people's money

"Using society's capital" is a more coherent and less small-minded way of expressing that. Those of us who "dare to earn better" alway pay more tax than people who are less able or less lucky.

If you have difficulty understanding that, read any of the books written by Karol Wojtyla. Or if you're not a fan of his for whatever reason, try reading the Gospels.

a pure communist ploy

Nor are normal centrist politics or a developed society a "Communist ploy".

News / Polish Parliamentary Elections 2023 [933]

The statistical map

Even more striking than the map last time and more polarised.

I'd like to see a different type of map, the kind where the shapes of the electoral district are distorted according to population size/density. On that map, the visuals would be even more striking.

Apart from Krakow (where many of the residents don't vote in that city) and Rezszow, the parts in red on that map don't have any major population centres.

My partner wants to travel here to the South coast from Gdynia

Now the drunk's passed out on a wet sofa, I've just had a look on Momondo, the site I usually use for planning air journeys.

I looked at GdaƄsk to Southampton (possibly cheaper if you use another UK airport) and there's an option on KLM with one piece of checked in luggage changing at Schiphol, return flight for 2100zl. It would be cheaper if she joined KLM's frequent flyer programme before booking since it gives the luggage free or at a discount. I generally check prices on that site then buy the ticket direct from the airline rather than through an intermediary..

Here's the site I use. Don't forget to check the box about luggage if you want an accurate price:

Indeed. Quite a time of change in Poland right now. I suspect the change will be smooth though since the party that are most contrarian have a lesser role now.

So what. They don't care much about that having other priorities right now,

Anyway, the thread is about transport routes UK/PL and not your view on customs.

No, I don`t miss that orange haired baboon.

Who are you to criticise baboons!

Thinking about trumpet's forthcoming criminal trials and prison sentences, I wonder if there'll be anything similar here if the new government uncover any wrongdoing by individuals.

Now how did you smuggle that in the EU from a non EU country?

MYOB.

I know my friends wife was fined even for first offense and now has a criminal record.

Poland don't generally fine you for bringing in food or a bit extra duty free. I often bring an extra bottle or so in and the only time I was checked the customs lady complemented me on my choice of booze and lt me bring the bottles through.

I know all the dishonest people do that.

Fortunately I'm not among them and asked him to check when he offered to check my bag in. He checked and incorrectly said it was included on the ticket and since he's an airline employee, why would I disagree? On Wizzair they sometimes do that, especially if there's not much hold luggage bing checked in and plenty of large cabin bags.

How's Shamrock Bar? That cheap brown leather jacket is beginning to look a bit scruffy BTW.

Love / Do Polish girls like to marry a man from Lebanon ??? [41]

Probably not. She'd be unlucky if she married someone and he turned out to be one of those.

Most prospective husbands would be one of the vast majority of Lebanese men who want nothing to do with terrorism.

it will be all over the news, so I think you'll hear about it.

Doubtless, though I don't read newspapers much these days or watch TV news ever.

I wonder where he is now?

Why?

Not something. I like. I felt the same when the murdered "Baby P" in the UK was eventually named by the press.

With Priority boarding and Flex option you get lots of luggage.

I did it last week and it worked. And the young lad on check in at Leeds Bradford Airport got the details wrong and let me check my cabin bag in for free.

I was a bit worried about luggage since I had a big suitcase packed full with an air fryer, sausages and bacon, HP sauce, gravy granules, English cheese and a shed load of Yorkshire lamb.

I didn't know that, however I don't much like it when the media name dead kids either,

1. I didn't name him, the media did.

Best not to repeat the media's sins.

. Why not?

The person is a minor and deserves privacy.

Does anybody know of a good, alternative route or solution.

If you use KLM and are in the frequent flyer programme you get a luggage allowance unless they've recently changed it. I've gone with them Poland-Manchester vi Schiphol or CDG.

There are also some cheap deals occasionally from LOT. I had to travel at very short notice recently and the best deal was LOT to London City Airport via Vilnius.

Sometimes it's better though to pay the baggage allowance on Wizzair or whatever.
