Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Would many Poles in modern day eastern Poland descend from Ruthenians,

You need to be aware that modern's Poland borders had been moved significantly to the west.
It means that what you term eastern Poland today had been a central Poland about (approximately) 70 years ago.

Was there a population in a Poland's east historically that would be a transitioning people's where Lechites and Ruthenians over lap?

- Lechties is no an ethnical term, it is not a term that had been used as far as we can tell - historically. It is a part of the national mythology created in the 19th century by idealistic writers, poets and historians while Poland had no state.

- Ruthenias is a name for a diverse group of people that had been living within borders of the Poland-Lithuanian Union. Their main characteristic was their religion-eastern-orthodoxy. It means that there had been a lot of mixing and honesty your question in the historical context makes no sense. If you're after some PURE DNA marker - you're wasting your time.

The Belarusan and Ukrainian languages were highly influenced by Polish. Polish less so by either.

So much so that I question if those are really languages rather than a local version of the Polish language.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

There were Poles before Poland was established

You cannot compare Europe where an indigenous populace created European culture based on nationality with USA/ Those are apples and oranges.
There were no Poles in the modern sense before Poland was established. There were some tribes and dominant tribe with a dynasty.

And only people of mixed ethnicity don't care about it.

No only fragile insecure teenagers care about as well as looser and racists.

Says the guy with no country lol.

What is that supposed to mean? its some kind of nonsense, what it has to do with anything? Refrain from using snippets of your doubtful wisdom because I feel compelled to return with - Say the guy with no brain. LOL!

US are based on GENOCIDE of Indians

No US is based on the Constitution, values, laws and people who are ready to stand for what they believe in.
-----OK I skip some retarded nonsense you're spewing---
Indian might be ethnic Americans but they are not ethnic US Americans. There was no country before colonist/settlers build their own. Only some half-nomadic warring tribes who were so advanced they couldn't invent a wheel and were barely out of the stone age when European setters arrived.

Who cares about ethnicity anyway? You mix some progressive BS with racist BS with some ahistorical BS.
What gives?

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

80+% of Poles don't

I don't know if that is 80% or 50% but those people need to learn what freedom is and what that pertain. Their fear is just result of being a slave for a totalitarian regime. They need to learn again what it means to be free. Citizens of the First Republic understood it well.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2237]

Frankly there should be any discussion since the USA is the best example why the right to own guns without very strict limitations is a very bad idea.

Well, we argue here that individuals have a right to own firearms.
This right is significant as the right to own firearm is based on the right of self-defense. The right to self-defence is in itself a self-evident implication of a general principle of a basic human right - the right to life.

We want to educate people in Poland as many of them had been brainwashed by a commie totalitarian propaganda.

History / Recommended Poland's history books [257]

I wouldn't. Good for someone who has a vague idea about Poland's history and about Poland. If someone is not into history or lack determination that book would bore the bejesus out of such a reader. Also there is a lot of issues that a good old Norman skim over or is just plainly wrong about.

His big popularity in the country derives from the fact that he was the first western historian that kind of point out some obvious although forgotten truths about Poland.

He treat Poland with some sympathy and gives it due to its glorious past. He even got some scolding for remanding that Poland had been called a Jewish paradise and why.

I would say that Zamoyski book is a better read and gives a general feel for Poland's history.

News / Future of Polish-Ukrainian relations [669]

Looks like a shared hate for Russia isn't enough to keep Ukraine and Poland on friendly terms any longer.

You mean both countries have no shared interest? Sure they do, provided Ukraine will behave as a stable country with clearly defined policy. Unfortunaly they fall short of the mark.

The main issue is a question of they historical policy. They are pursuing glorification of Bandera and his Band of Merry Men, one oft he worst scum on Earth at the time when he was competing against Hitler and Stalin and their crew.

His statues peppered all over the Ukraine, streets named after him and his scummy cronies. children in school brainwashed with fairy stories about him and his crew.

Nah, that cannot stand. If Ukraine state want to take this way - good by! Poland need or rather have to reconsider its policy.
---
In fact that Bandera nonsense is a choice. Ukrainians involves in his crimes and their progeny are about 1 to 5% of the current population of the country, those who were supporting them or hold any such a tradition of support I would list at maybe 15-17% of the populace.

Why imposing it on the rest of the population? Why infect them with this kind of virus? It has no future.
It'll isolate Ukraine on the world stage in the long run.. It seems like a very well thought over convert operation by the Putin intelligence. Some useful idiots at play too - no doubt.

The bottom line is that Poland has no interest in nurturing a country where the Bandera ideology gonna be prevalent.

Sticking the head in the sand and blaming the Germans

Is that your survival instinct?/ Did you use it while standing on tarmac? That would explain your posts here.
Germans are to blame for taking unilateral decision and then trying to shift consequences of that decision onto others. I do not see them being kin to part with the surplus of their coffers. There is no willingness to pay compensation for the war to Poland and only to Poland.

They are looking for a colony or a sucker. Get!

because it doesn't solve the problem

Man, in what way sending some of those people from Germany are going solve any problem? That might ease German problem with them but the EU is not about it. Me me me - that narcissistic buffoon like behavior of Germany doesn't bode well for the future of the EU. Germany inviting all those people has broken the EU law, and that has been confirmed even by a German court.

So stop repeating German propaganda, outdated propaganda at that.

They are questioning how committed some countries really are to the EU, and rightfully so.@ TheOther

They are repeating German propaganda. Committed to EU doesn't equal committed to obey orders from Berlin.
I think Germany are trying to use that issue (so called refugees) that they know fully well is not going to be implement as requested to try to force a crisis in the EU. Trying together with France to split EU into countries willing to obey Berlin and became sort of second calls depended countries - colonies, federati. At the same time forcing those which will not stand for it to exist EU.

It high time Poland's gov start planning for it.
Three Seas initiative and deal with USA could be a helpful assed in this.

News / Poland supporting potential new EU members - Georgia and Turkey [32]

What do you guys think?

President in Poland doesn't decide polices of the state on his own, has rather secondary role of a 'fifth wheel'. Beside Turkey has no chance to be welcomed in the EU. Not at all.

At this stage I doubt they would even want it. So, that 'promise' by the president is just a sweet talk. To sweeten a economic and military deal.

Language / Polish language would look better written in Cyrillic Script? [212]

you need boats for rivers - how do you carry a boat when you travel from one river basin to anothe

you make one or a raft, plenty of material all around and with a few mates it is a question of day or two.
I don't take sides here, just saying.

guess what travel from say Wrocław to Gniezno would last equally long on horse as using rivers

It depends what tracks looked like those days but I would bet on rivers.

Please stick to the topic

News / Austria's swing to the far right on Poland? [229]

Iron, you cannot deny the fact that far right parties are on the rise all across Europe.

They're not far right parties. Those are people voting on these politicians who will carry out will of the people. Democracy is build on this premise. Thing is establishment generally speaking and politicians in particularly are not doing what they should, their duty - taking care for their own citizens, their own constituency, they listen to those who power and money and to an ideology.

So who is at fault those who ignore vices of their own populace, their constituency in the name of some shady deals and crazy destructive ideologies or those who are saying - hey vote us and we'll keep those millions of Islamists out of the country?

much different ideology-wise from the NSDAP

That is a hysterical overstatement. They all are different and they all have their own separate identity. There is maybe one thing that could be seen as a similar to Nazis overtone. They present themselves as victims but that factors is present in the mains streams parties and in the establishment as well. Don't they present themselves as champions fighting against discrimination, an oppressive patriarchy for rights ......().

Are they not in their rhetoric and methods(antifa, BLM) far from the NSDAP?
I think that are much closer than any of so called far right....

As a biker I take offense to that.

Well bikers seems to be overtly attached to the idea that all bikers are brothers and there are people out there who are will and are talking advantage of it! Facts and logic don't care about your feelings.

I know what phobia means. I'm asking you why it is that Russo-phobia is an overused expression like an anti- Semitism? While Nobody hears often about USA - phobia or Polono-phobia.

--Because both had a great lobbying. In Russia case by their secrets services. Everything when Poland react to some perceived or real Russian transgression - there is yell phobia. pff!!

I call it reason.

Exactly. Polish government tends not to like Russians hence didn't let them 'into their house' because of

Depends which Polish gov. post-commies love them and Putin. People above ameba like people (those that are not interested in politics) tend to be wary of the Russians that have direct ties with the KGB operative in charge of Russia.

Bikers are just gullible people.

Russophobia: fear or dislike of Russia or Russian policy

Wow that has it name? KGB and useful idiots really done a good job. Along anti-Semitism there is another useful tool Russo-phobia, Homo-phobia ect. Where is Poland-phobia?

Why there is no USA- phobia, Spain - phobia or what not?
Think or do you have a think-phobia too?

Not all admire Stalin as a person, but rather his victory of Nazi Germany and liberating USSR from Nazis.

no, they admire Russian, Soviet or what have you imperialism and expansion of Moscow, is that left or right is that is under the guise of red communism or czar matters not. That is a characteristic mindless militarism and imperialism characteristic to Russia.

They were refused Poland over political reasons as russophobia is very common in Poland -

A what? What are you babbling about? If you don't like mosquitos and don't let them into your house for a very good reason does it mean you suffer from mosquito-phobia?

That's exactly what the Nazis said before 1933.

Well Nazi aid that is good to be vegetarian. Such you lock up all vegetarians? Nazi said that abortion for other nations than Germans is a good thing and should be made available to them. Does it mean all so called pro-choice organizations are Nazis? You need to be consistent, Cannot just chose one thing at random and ignore all other things Nazis claimed.

Hell, Nazis wanted United Europe - is that a Nazi UE?

What? You have a very superficial view on politicks. Who cares about some Kurz, he is far right only in commie nomenclature.

News / Tusk turning his back to idea about Intermarium (New Commonwealth), seeing only EU as future for Poland [124]

If I had a choice I would rather live in Putin's Russia than in Merkel's Germany.

If I was forced to choose between those two I would call it quits.

you are probably living in your parents' goat hut in the arse end of Europe.

I would rather live in goat hut than one of those countiers.

You are an extremely pathetic figure when you are talking to someone in this way.

. hey let him be, he only responded to roz at her finest. Nothing wrong with that. You on the other hand never forget to carry two or three buckets of vaseline - one need to be Z-wit to use it all in no time.

Kaczynski position

I don't know what was Kaczynski position on the issue and neither do you. I'm sure your are ignorant of the fact tat it was pro-life organization with hundred of thousand signatures of ordinary people that carried that project of the bill to the Sejm. It didn't pass so stop your yapping.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with that notion provided majority of the voters would support it.

However I am not sure of the governments need to legislate on an issue with personal ramifications. I.e.

As long as there is a state founded health service - there is plenty of need. I personally would be in favor of a private health insurance. Still I would support a notion that killing children is not a good thing. I think that killing children sanctioned by the law is bad for the people.

Anti-conception in all forms and shapes, sterilization that is all a sphere of a personal choice and freedom. There must be some moral standard applied if a life of the another is at stake. A no sane person would agree that amidst a Christian country killing children is a question of a personal choice - that is dumb.

History / Is there a list of those in the Polish Army during WWII? [195]

in Bari in Southern Italy with Polish troops at the end of WW11

It doesn't make much sense! Are you sure he was in the Polish army? If so, you can find his file. If not ....sorry.

Allies landed in Salerno and Reggio di Calabria - Bari is across the way of Southern Italy.
If he was there with any army it seems likely it was German Army. .but that wouldn't account for them turning him off, they would have taken him as a prison of war. unless all this is somehow mix up. Was he a deserter, a criminal escaping justice. I don't know, you may want to find out.

Why would he approach Americans? There was II Polish Corps. as a part of the Allied forces.

ended up escaping on a boat to UK via Algiers

Escaping what, whom?
The simplest way to find out the truth is to find what Army he was serving in - I'm sure there are relevant records in existence.
