Life / Stereotypes about Polish people being stupid? [281]

So Are the Polish Jokes dying away in America

I've never heard one in the past 20 years, and I also didn't come across any openly derogatory remark about Poles or Poland in the media during that time.

Jews (around 2% of the US population) are disprortioantely represnted in the American media and blame Poles for the communist regime's 1968 anti-Semitic purge and other Polish-Jewish friction.

I have no idea where you get this from, but here on the West Coast nobody blames Poles for anything publicly or cares about its communist regime in the 1960's. It's a non-issue, simple as that. Outlets like the Polish American Journal make this nonsense up, it seems.

What's wrong with Polish American Journal

Everything. This review on Amazon says it all... :)

amazon.com/Polish-American-Journal/dp/B00006KT2F

"This is a folksy paper geared towards the Polish American blue hairs who still attend functions down at the struggling Dom Polski so you won't ever find any articles critical of Poland. ... many of the most chauvinistic, parochial attitudes associated with Polish Catholic ethno-nationalism, including a certain degree of..."

Life / Stereotypes about Polish people being stupid? [281]

It was part of Hitler's hate through humor campaign. Some of this propaganda got into the US via communist sympathizers working in Hollywood.

Show me a reputable source for that - not some propaganda crap made up by the Polish American Journal.

Genealogy / Looking for any and all information on Dabrowski/Dombrowski from Poland [88]

@Kiki5

There is only one male Dombrowski in the Social Security Death Index who died in January 1979. His name was Anthony Dombrowski, and he was born 30 Oct 1890.

familysearch.org/search/collection/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3A%22Anton%20Leon%22~%20%2Bsurname%3ADombrowski~%20%2Bdeath_year%3A1979-1979~&collection_id=1202535

If he was an immigrant, try to find his name either in the Ellis Island database, or get hold of his naturalization record.

News / Poland in the European Union. Polexit? [559]

The EU in its present state is not sustainable on the long run. I believe that at some point in time it will split up into a group of rich, north European countries (France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg and maybe Denmark) that are willing to give up large parts of their sovereignty to form a federalist state, while all others will either join different organizations or go it alone.

I don't know though if it would be a good idea for Poland to form a union with the countries Gregy menitoned above. Maybe after these nations have fully developed economically in the more distant future, but definitely not at the present time.

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

And that's an argument ... for what ?

That it's mostly Americans who, after 150+ years, continue to talk about their imaginary ties to the old countries? In Europe, most Poles (for example) simply assimilated and their descendants don't feel any connection whatsoever to where their ancestors originally came from. This is going off topic, so we should better stop it, Grzegorz.

Ever heard about logic ?

You should pay a little bit more attention, Grzegorz. We were talking about Polonia, and that most of its members assimilated over the past 150 years.

Shut up, xenophobe.

Calling someone a neo-Nazi is xenophobic? That's a new one. LOL!

And as to the French of Polish origin, a lot of them don't even speak Polish and feel completely French.

Don't bother arguing with Polish neo-Nazis, InPolska. The world's second largest Polonia is in Germany. Between two and three million people, and only a minority of them feel Polish or speak Polish. They are Germans, just like most Polonia members in France are French and not Poles. This imaginary connection between Polonia and the old country some people here on PF are banging on about endlessly is only in the head of a few radical nutters - mostly from the US.

keep to the topic everyone.

News / The Leningrad Amber room finally found in Poland? [11]

Really? That's new to me. Were they soldiers' souvenirs?

Don't know. A mosaic and a chest showed up in the north German city of Bremen in 1997 and were returned to Russia in 2000:

History / Question about Warsaw Ghetto (shared building?) and Monument [29]

in Germany alone 290 people were killed due to real racism in years 1990- 2014.

Incorrect. Between 75 and 178, depending on whom you ask. That's a tiny fraction of the total number of homicides in Germany since 1990. I'd bet the same is true for Poland.

they came from the same town in Poland

They came from the same town in the German Empire. Important, since we are talking about genealogy here.

Genealogy / Name of a town in Poland in early 1900's [32]

I did a little more research, and it seems that the civil registration records (births, marriages and deaths, 1874-1908) for Primkenau (Przemkow), Kreis Sprottau, have survived the war. They can be found in the Wrocław State Archive, Legnica branch. Good luck!

PS: There's a ton of historic images available on Google

They came from the same village and Mike didn't say anything when I linked to Karolina Matras above, that's why I assumed that he was looking for her as well. But you're right, the second document refers to Antoni Drozdowski.

I read Przemkow ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Przemk%C3%B3w ), which in 1904 was part of the German Empire.

Here's a dataset from the LDS that might be interesting:

Mike, if you can't find the town, try the naturalization records of your grandparents instead. All the information you'd need is on there.

Which means it's at the end of your list and swept under the carpet.

Don't be silly. Polonophobia or any other of that kind can be filed under xenophobic posts. I thought that was clear. Don't try to create a problem where there is none.

Polonophobia falls under "and what not"... :)

There are a million things people get upset about or are offended by. No member warning system can cover that, and not even the best mod has the time (and nerves) to check everything. In short: a big waste of time.

This whole warning system is childish in my opinion. You either allow personal insults, xenophobic posts, communist propaganda, sexist remarks, homophobia and what not because of the free speech thing, or you don't. The admin's position is pro free speech, so there you go. Time for the mods to retire... :)

News / Poland's post-election political scene [4080]

Germany (which after 2004 insisted on keeping its labor market closed to Polish people as long as possible and wanted extensions).

Well, you forgot to tell the whole story. Poland refused to allow foreigners to buy land (they demanded the right to maintain their restrictions on the alienation of lands to foreign citizens despite the free market policy of the European Union), so the Germans and others returned the favor and protected their labor market from Polish employees undercutting the local wage levels. The majority of the EU did exactly the same as Germany, and only a few countries allowed Poles in if I recall correctly. With the result that some of the locals like in the UK complained big time afterwards that their wages brought down by the new arrivals...

Germany has been a very poor partner to new member states

Yeah, that's why most of the EU funds that Poland receives originate in Germany. Very poor partner indeed.

not to mention Greece

You don't know what you're talking about. The financial crisis in Greece is completely home made. The only ones to blame are the Greeks themselves.

has precious little ground to stand on in calling for European solidarity and cooperation.

Good, maybe they should also cut any financial aid to Poland then. Who needs such European "friends" and partners, right?

History / Polish conscripts to German army [132]

Elisabeth, I'm not aware of any public database that allows you to trace your mother, but there are plenty of web sites out there which might be of help. I would try the first one below for a more specific search, and the second one for some background information.

bundesarchiv.de/zwangsarbeit/haftstaetten/index.php.en?tab=1
zwangsarbeit-archiv.de/en/links/index.html

Good luck!

History / Polish conscripts to German army [132]

Would the Dienststelle website be the contact for his army record?

Yes, the Deutsche Dienststelle (WASt) in Berlin is the one to contact. If the records have not been lost during the war, they might send you a whole bunch of document copies and other information about your father. Just be prepared to wait over a year for a response. They are extremely busy.

I wonder if there have been any books published in Germany on the history of Polabian Slavs

Maybe this?

Nazism was unique and confined to Nazi Germany...

Just to name a few:

Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging in Nederland (Dutch)
Nasjonal Samling (Norwegian)

...and has been consigned to the dustbin of history.

Or not ...
