History / BEATS OF FREEDOM - A HISTORY OF POLISH ROCK MUSIC [108]

I don`t think other Warsaw Pact countries aired this kind of Western music on their national radioes

According to a friend (during the PRL) the broadcast times were scheduled to try to keep young potential troublemakers (to the regime) off the streets. Not so much a concern in more authoritarian demoludy (or Hungary either).

Study / Various education and school issues in Poland. Opinions, stories, controversies. [1006]

@pawian

It'll be bring unemployment if teachers aren't careful.... (look for a bunch of 'kids love remote learning' articles as a sign they're about to axe schools).

The ongoing dismantling of the nation state means the government no longer accepts the obligation of educating children (think about that and all the implications that come from it very carefully.

Poland is far from the forefront of said dismantling but it's going to happen unless Polish people are ready to push back.

if the schools and other public facilities shgould be open in September.

Be careful, in some western countries (like my own sadly) this is going to be used to close physical schools and replace them with youtube channels....

If teachers have any sense at all they'll be demanding that physical schools reopen on schedule.

History / BEATS OF FREEDOM - A HISTORY OF POLISH ROCK MUSIC [108]

I had to check that I hadn't mistakenly put it on at 45rpm

Back in the early 90s (when super cheap pirate cassettes were everywhere) I bought a compilation of Hanka Ordonówna not having any idea who she was because I like some music from the 1930s (which is what the cover picture looked like).

I loved the tape and played it a _lot_ and then when I saw a non-pirate album (vinyl) I bought it to take back to the US... imagine my surprise at how different it sounded.... I suspect that the tape was recorded too fast. The 1.25 option on youtube sounds a bit too fast so I think it was probably in the 1.10-1.15 range enough to change the sound but still sound credible.... I've since learned to appreciate her at normal speed, but... it's not quite the same....

Real Estate / False advertising? Poland rental property advice. [34]

rusty with the language and not up to date with the l

Just a note (in case you were expecting her to be able to take care of everything...) IME Polonia who move to Poland often have worse troubles adapting than do foreigners with no previous experience.

our best bet is to grind the Polish and learn how to take care of these things yourself... Polish bureaucrats have no trouble shooting down a Polish person with fluent but rusty Polish but often aren't sure how to deal with a foreigner speaking crappy Polish who won't take no for an answer and so they give in just to get rid of you....

History / What do Poles owe to Jews? [599]

Carp is very overrated. I've eaten plenty here out of politeness and don't recall ever enjoying it.

I've had it in better and worse home versions, but that first time in the stołówka was godawful.... obviously it hadn't been.... flushed? whatever they do to get the mud taste out (which is where the whole 'keep it in the bathtub' thing come from).

The vietnamese carp was quite alright but mostly I can leave carp alone.

Also, I've just never been much of a fish eater even though I grew up in a coastal area, oddly the locals didn't eat much fish though shrimp, oysters, crab and lobster were all enjoyed (I didn't enjoy oysters much but I'm all on board for crustaceans... a particular favorite of mine was rock shrimp which took a loooooong time to prepare due to their hard shells but the flesh was like a combination of shrimp and lobster. And they were cheap since they didn't look very appetizing in raw form...

History / Cursed soldiers controvercy - not all Poles respect them [320]

why on earth is my question

My theory is that he grew up in a violent household and his violent political fantasies are a way of acting out against his parents.... (he also self medicates to a larger than normal degree).

what German-Nazi's thought, did and wanted to do

Dirk thinks they didn't go far enough and said more than once he would have been on the nazi side at the time... so, he's kind of beyond help.

History / Poles and (Polish) Jews... Victims of war... and beyond [380]

Deech has claimed that Poland is "squatting on property of 3 million Shoah victims"

Sounds like crap.... if any property is to be returned to "Shoah victims" it should first be returned to the state it was in 1945...

the taste of Jewish carp

worst carp I've ever had: In a university stołówka, mud, mud and more mud. I have an iron and taste buds dulled by decades of horrible American processed 'food' but I couldn't even finish half

mid carp: Fish soup under the bridge in Szeged Hungary, hot but.... not great

best carp I've ever had: At a Vietnamese New Year's celebration in Poland, the spices complemented the taste rather than overpowering it (like Hungary) or failing in the face of overwhelming resistance (stołówka).

Would you care to answer the question?

My question is do you care about civilian children getting killed in wartime... so far your answer is "it depends on their nationality"...

About what I expected.

Have you been calling American soldiers baby killers lately?

А у вас негров линчуют.... What a Soviet answer!

Two possible reasons

So you're willing to give people killing civilians the benefit of a doubt? or should I just respons with А у нас негров линчуют?

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

Is it a copy from English?

Not quite, the English is to keep your cards close to your chest with no mention of medals there.... on google I also see 'vest' but have never heard that.... it might be British in which case I'm not sure what it refers to... probably not kamizelka... if Hyacinth Bucket can be believed it refers to a wifebeater t-shirt.

Life / Is Polish church involved in politics too much? [137]

why are you so cruel? Do you really hate Poland so much?

Relax, you couldn't pay him to return to Poland... he only wants to complain about how it's not less like the country he actually chooses to live in....

We need a term for those who think of the country in fantasy terms... imaginary Poles?

News / Years of Poland in the EU - assessment of pros and cons [1199]

why don't they see all these masses of coming immigrants as potential future Christians to fill the empty churches again?

Haven't you ever heard about the death sentence for apostasy from Islam? I mean seriously..... did Germany take in hundreds of thousands of people without knowing the first thing about their religion?

Muslims in western countries who try to become non-Muslims face long term campaigns of intimidation and violence....

I though even Tacitus knew that....

its' incredibly short-sighted position in the refugee crisis

Poland isn't the country that's being short-sighted.

Let's play a game. Imagine Poland accepts 10,000 unemployable "refugees" that Germany doesn't want (I fully expect Germany to hold onto the minority that can be made into economic contributors).

How on Earth will Poland be able to keep them in Poland with open borders between Poland in Germany?

Answer that and we'll discuss the next step

Life / Is Polish church involved in politics too much? [137]

how is that means involving in politicks?

Annulment is only supposed to be granted in very specific cases, none of which seem to really apply here.... and given his political profile it's natural to assume that had some influence.... also in his new wife's case....

In some western countries annulment has simply become a type of catholic divorce (and income stream for the church). I guess it's normal that Poland start down that path...
