Life / Why Do You Love Poland? [907]

jarnowa

So I assume you're against Polish immigration in the West, the US, Aus and Canada too? Or is that something else, is that not immigration?

But LTB is right: there is only one world, one small ball and we have to share it together. It doesn't belong to us, we belong to it, there's a difference. Like Keanu Reeves said in that flipperdyflop movie when the Earth stood still or something, "when we die, Earth lives; when Earth dies, we die." We don't own the world, the world owns us. So let's try and get along as much as pssbl.

And emphysema was a Jewish invention?

But of course, yehudi, didn't you know that? Silly you :)

Norman Davies

I'd recommend "Rising 1944" about the Warsaw rising - very well written.

Life / Wszystkich Świętych (All Saints Day) // Dzien Zaduszny (All Souls day) [93]

I personally have no opinion about Hallowe'en, however I can only speak for Dutch society and I have observed that it's been promoted pretty much lately, even though it's never been a Dutch tradition. I guess the biggest drive behind the introduction of Hallowe'en is just a commercial one...

>^..^<

M-G (thinks one can count the number of ppl who actually know what Hallowe'en is all about on one hand - to most it's just a party where you dress up and talk about scary things)

Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

THIS IS RIDICULOUS

Indeed, and just treat it like that, like my good friend SeanBM says. I will give you an example:

Why do I hate Poland?

I hate Poland because:

1) it's bigger than the Netherlands
2) they don't speak Dutch there and haven't got a clue what a Sjoelbak is! (this drives me nuts for anger)
3) they can't pour a decent pint of Guinness.

History / Polish Atlantis (pre-war Warsaw, Poland in pictures). [38]

Just wondering: did they ever rebuild any of the buildings in these pics back into their former glory or did they just demolish the ruins and put some gross and grey Soviet block instead?

I'm asking this because in Ypres, Belgium, a larger city that was completely flattened in 1918, they completely rebuild the entire city centre to it's pre-WW1 glory in the 1920's.

Polonia / What about the Poles living in Germany? [65]

There is a difference between freedom to travel and freedom to work.

Yes, but they can stay there, can't they? In Holland, for example, there are a lot of illegal workers being rolled up by the Police all the time....

Also, there are those who were born in Gdansk and certain other cities considered of German descent that can get a German passport hence live and work in Germany. A lot of Poles have taken this opportunity before the Iron Curtain fell.

RevokeLisbon

The parts you left out (the article is from 29/04/2009):

Free movement of labour has come up the political agenda since the start of the recession, with a strike at the Lindsey oil refinery in February in the UK caused by visiting workers accepting lower wages than local labourers.

"Migration only works if it benefits the British people, and we are determined to make sure that is what happens,” said Phil Woolas, immigration minister.

Yet there are 2 milion Poles in Germany. You as anti-immigration fighter, should be happy with Germany's and Austria's decision. But it doesn't really matter, as Poland as well as Germany and Austria are both in the Shengen agreement.

did you notice that the whois information has been deleted?

Yes, now you mention it, I see it too. Where are the conspiracy theorists? Maybe they can shed some light on this :)) But yeah, I think they are indeed sleeping as they are living in Germany and they have to be on time, pünktlich as the Germans say :)

They need work permits to work in Germany

Not anymore. In fact not since 2004. Germany just closed the borders for 3 years. Yet most of them found a way to live in Germany anyway. And besides, there are around 2 million Poles living in Germany.

So it's in the US. I suspected that already, but I wasn't sure - and too lazy to look it up on WHOIS.net :)

But anyway, any Poles who want to share with us their view on living in Germany?

I have that too, as I stated in my post on the Random thread. Maybe it's because the forum is hosted in an English speaking country?

Edit: Germany was one of the first countries they came to, far before the Iron Curtain fell. It was the closest Western country they had.

As promised, here is a thread about and for Poles living in Germany. There are more Poles living in Germany than there are in the UK, Ireland and Sweden combined, nearly 2 million. How come we nearly never see a discussion about them? What do they think of living in Germany? How they experience live in Germany? What do they like about Germany? Et cetera, et cetera.

You forget the the 1848 revolution. The 1905 revolution in Russia after the lost war, was the first revolution since 1848. The 1848 revolution was one of the more important ones, because it gave many countries their constitution.

Did you know that in fact Germans are the largest ethnic group in the US? I was astounded by this discovery too, thought it were the Irish or Italians, but no, it seems like the Germans are the biggest group...By largest group I mean the ppl of European anchestry.

History / What Was Happening in Poland around 1905? [73]

there were no other wars at that time

Russian - Japanese war of 1904-1905. The defeat of the Russians seriously damaged Russia's image in the world.

Poland didn't re-appear again as a country until 1918. Where did your anchestors emigrate from? Germany, Austria-Hungary or Russia? Maybe you could sift through the archives of those respective countries?

Bolsheviks were ripping through eastern europe creating mayhem. thus poles hate jews and our fathers died of emphysema.

Hm, I don't understand that sentence. Bolsheviks didn't become a force majeure until WW1 and I don't see the connection between them wreaking havoc and Poles hating the Jews and your forefathers dying of emphysema. Or are you one of those who seem to think that you have to involve the Jews in about just every mishap that happened to the Poles? If you do, stop thinking like that. Time for some refreshing thoughts.

Food / Polish Pizza !! The best in the world? [330]

ketchup on everything. it's just a bad habit

I'm not sure if I agree with you on that one, Wroclaw...Ketchup is actually very healthy! Surprising as it may be, but tomato products are actually healther than the fruit itself...Has to do with the difficulties our body has with absorping fresh tomatoes. Plus tomatoes is the only fruit that doesn't lose its healthy stuff when being processed. Two tablespoons of Tomato puree or 5 of ketchup a day removes little wrinkles in time and makes you look younger, reduces your change to certain types of cancer (notable prostate cancer is reduced to 0%) substantially, makes your liver come clean and reduces the risk of a coronial disease with 50%...So I wouldn't exactly say it's a bad habit to eat a lot of ketchup :)

At least not all!!! I like to think that I'm not one of those.

I didn't say that, sweetie. In every country, among every ppl there are good ppl, there are bad ppl. Unfortunately bad ppl have more impact on society and views than good ppl do.

Oh yes, they are. Face it. It's not only in Poland, but Poles abroad have sometimes (not all, have to admit that) the most hideous views on black ppl.

I mean they gossip about you in their language, right in front of your face..hate that..

Hm, had that once over here. I was standing at a busstop and behind me there were two guys talking about me, making fun of me in Dutch. When the bus came, I just smiled at them and told them in Dutch: "be careful what you say in your own language. Somebody might understand what you're saying." They were embarrassed to bits and I had a good laugh about it in the bus :)

Edit: mfeva, they do that with me too. What I usually do if they do such a thing is: make comments about their b**bs and *ss or face (when they are female) or how stupid they look (when they are male) straight to their face in Dutch. Just tell them in Dutch that you think their b**bs are a bit small compared to their *ss and so on. Just talk to them like that in Dutch. It works :)

Edit2: but be careful to use Dutch words that mean the same, but can't be traced back to English. So instead using the word "titten" or "tieten", which can be traced back to "t*ts", use "memmen" as there is no way in cold hell they will be able to trace this back to "t*ts", even though it means the same :) For *ss you can pretty much use any Dutch word for the bodypart as nothing is easily traced back to English. But be careful too to make sure it can't be traced back to German either, some of those buggers can speak German, you know.

Dutch

See, I knew where those eyes came frome :)

I like eyes of which one is just a teeny-weeny bit more focused at the centre. It's hard to explain, but I will see if I can find an example of what I mean:

Her left eye is a little bit more focused towards the centre of her face. Or is it that the eyes are in an identical position? Anyway, she is Polish, Jane Kaczmarek from Malcolm in the Middle. I don't find her really attractive, but it was about the eyes. And I like eyes like that very much. Doesn't matter what colour they have.

Edit: could this be a Polish thing? Hm, no don't think so, have seen it with some Dutch girls too.

I don't like Poland because:

1) their "matjes-" herring comes only halfway the taste of the real thing, the Dutch salted herring and it's the only decent herring I can get here in Dublin :(

2) My Ex, obviously
3) The language, I can't understand what they say if they talk fast. Also when they talk slow, for that matter.
