Life / Do you think women have the place they deserve in modern Polish society ? [66]

when I tell you to call me no more..

You see, all you can do is insult/attack people and lie. There were no calls, you shared that private stuff with me in a private message on PF :)

Let's keep private things private eh?

Haha :D So, you'd like me to be a better person than you are and treat you better than you're treating me, huh?

Yes, so why do you say such nasty stuff about others first and then you beg for mercy to keep yours private????

Yeah, a-holes like him like to dish it out, but they can't take it lol

@Novichok, your post #49 is a load of prejudiced bollocks.

Maybe they are.

They clearly aren't too stupid, because if they were they wouldn't be able to get such education and do such jobs in various countries - women are working in those fields not only in "progressive" West, but also in Muslim Turkey, for example.

Btw, in my class at high school the best student at math was a girl (and my best friend :)).

Instead of being a busybody and trying to force people to do what you want.

How am I being a "busybody and trying to force people to do what I want" by sharing positive stats about Poland? Are you stupid? (that's a rhetorical question, btw lol) 🤦

No kids, no man who want you, you have plenty of time on your hands to spoil it for other women because your are jealous .

You don't know anything about me, but it looks like I know one thing (among others) about you - you're too stupid to work in those fields, so you're jealous of those women who can :))) That's pathetic.

And why are you attacking me personally for having a normal discussion with people? It seems it's because you don't have anything intelligent or factual to say on the subject matter.

You claim all kinds of things about me despite not knowing anything about me, while I do know stuff about your private life that don't show you in good light and yet I'm not yapping about them publicly on the forum in order to discredit you.

Your behaviour is lame and immature, Ironside.
Grow up.

Off-Topic / Random movies (not Polish) proposed by forum users [95]

Here is a great movie that you can't help but like.

Have you seen it?

Here is the trailer to it.

Thanks, I have heard about this movie before, but haven't seen the trailer yet.

Let us know if you liked it

They will probably show it at some point on Polish TV, so I'm going to be looking out for it. For now I can say that I don't like that scene where they make poses in front of the Warsaw Uprising Monument - it's disrespectful... Especially that the main protagonists are supposed to be Jews from what I understand... I suspect they wouldn't be behaving like that in front of the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes or a Holocaust memorial...

women value the idea of work/life balance more than men do.

Hmm, what if it looked differently if women had more interesting jobs? It's not that hard to value work/life balance when you're a cleaning lady or working as a cashier at Biedronka... and if you don't have the pressure on you of being the sole breadwinner for the family... 🤔

Women have other stereotypical societal pressures on them that may influence their choices:

And most women probably want to have kids and don't want to spend large portions of the day away from them.

Don't want to or have no other choice?

There's definitely the "mother's guilt" at play here, but why fathers don't have that feeling of guilt when they're away from their kids for large portions of the day or at least often not to the same extent as women?

I've read not long ago an interview with a Polish psychologist. She said she was asked by an owner of a company to help his female CEO, because she was suffering from "job burnout". But when the psychologist talked to that CEO it turned that her work isn't the cause of the burnout - she loved her job. The problem was that despite being a CEO of a serious company and earning a lot of money she had a second job - at home. She was taking care of the kids and doing all the housework, because she wanted to show that she can be a good mother and wife despite working professionally on such a high position. And, of course, that was too much. From what I remember her husband is a taxi driver.

She was very toxic as a teacher and we were all fed up with her.

lol Our Russian teacher maybe wasn't that toxic, but was definitely irritating and generally not very pleasant - she had a very high-pitched, whiny voice, and when she was screaming it would get even worse ;O Sometimes I wondered if they made her the teacher of Russian to discourage us from learning that language ;D

"Women working as scientists and engineers were primarily employed in the service sector"

It's in that link I posted:

"Across all economic activities present in the statistical classification of economic activities in the EU (NACE rev. 2), women represented 41.0% of the scientists and engineers workforce. This share was higher in services related activities at 45.6%. In manufacturing, women represented 22.4% of scientists and engineers, while in other activities that share was 23.9%. "

But I'm not obsessing that not enough are going into any particular field

Me neither, but I don't like it when women are getting discouraged from going into those fields, when they are met with hostile environment once they get there, when they're treated worse than men there, when people claim they're too stupid or not good enough to go into those fields. Such stereotypical way of thinking (about "women's and men's interests and what they prefer") has consequences. I had a look at comments on Eurostat Facebook profile under the post about this data and these are comments of a woman from Finland (which is famous for having good education):

in places with more.... delicate economic situations women find STEM types of education and jobs more appealing.

Hmm, I don't know - this doesn't add up when you look at Sweden and Norway - both dark blue almost entirely... 🤔

I'm not sure why this is framed as being a 'problem'.

Probably because men like to claim that women are too stupid to do those jobs and to get such education.

So, the best and the worst regions in the EU in this regard are:

At NUTS 1 regional level, the highest shares of women in science and technology in the EU were in:

🇪🇸Canarias (59.2%)
🇵🇹Região Autónoma dos Açores (57.5%)
🇵🇱Makroregion Wschodni (56.5%)

Lowest in:

🇭🇺Közép-Magyarország (30.1%)
🇮🇹Sud in Italy (30.6%)
🇩🇪Baden-Württemberg (30.8%)

To be honest, judging by this map most of Western Europe isn't looking great o_O Turkey looks better lol What on Earth... 🤨 I wonder how RuSSia and the US would compare... 🤔

According to Eurostat in 2023 there were 7.7 million female scientists and engineers in the EU, 381 200 more than in 2022:

ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/w/edn-20250211-1

Poland looking good!: 🤗🇵🇱❤️👍

"At level 1 of the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS 1), female scientists and engineers were in the majority in 12 EU regions:

🇪🇦 4 regions of Spain: Canarias (59.2%), Noroeste (54.2%), Centro (53.5%) and Noreste (52.2%);

🇵🇹 2 regions of Portugal: Região Autónoma dos Açores (57.5%) and Madeira (55.8%);

🇵🇱 Makroregion Wschodni (56.5%) and Makroregion Centralny* (52.6%) in Poland, Severna i yugoiztochna in Bulgaria (54.4%), Norra Sverige in Sweden (51.5%), as well as Denmark (50.8%), and Corse in France (50.5%)."

*including my region?! :O 😁👍

History / Crazy 1990s in Poland - transition from communism to capitalism - stories [111]

But most students refused to learn it as the language of occupiers.

That's true. However, I didn't refuse - I enjoyed learning languages and I was a good student so I was studying it. There were kids at my class though that couldn't even read the Cyrillic and so I was writing down the transliteration for them so they could "read" short texts aloud in the class.
Also, my father always told me: "It's good to know the language of the enemy." lol

the shortage of teachers of English in the edu market.

Yeah, there wasn't enough English teachers in our city, so we had to learn Russian :/ I remember that one young lady would come to our school after classes and thaught us some English for only a short period of time.

I remember the most famous one - about a funny monster from space called Muzzy who likes eating clocks on Earth.

OMG, I loved that show as a little kid! :D "Muzzy eats clocks" xD

Yet, it was tragically underfunded

That wasn't the only problem - many experienced police officers were fired for political reasons and so there weren't enough of them to train the new ones. Some new laws were introduced restricting the use of guns by the police. And, of course, it was a new reality for everyone - borders opened up, high unemployment, etc.

it's customary when someone applies to a particular university
program in another country to congratulate them, no?

Not really, not in Poland at least o_O You congratulate people once they get in, not before lol Besides, he didn't even apply yet, he's just been considering it.

@Metra, I really doubt there are going to be any significant changes in the recruitment rules for the next academic year, so what's the problem exactly? 🤔

Im also trying to contact different Irish people who study there now

Good luck then!

News / CO2 emissions in Poland. Should Poland go nuclear or stick with clean coal technologies? [93]

Also, judging by what I've read here China may apparently burn less coal despite building more coal power plants, because Chinese coal plants have been running less often:

sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/china-coal-plants

"Power plants usually aren't running all the time. They're turned on and off or ramped up and down when they're needed.

The 'capacity factor' of the plant tells us how often it's running at maximum power. The capacity factor of China's coal plants has been dropping over the last 15 years. See the chart below from S&P Global Commodity Insights.

In the first decade of the 2000s, plants were running around 70% of the time. They're now running around 50%. We can also see this in operating hours data from the National Energy Administration (NEA) of China.

If utilisation rates continue to drop, China's coal use could fall despite it adding more capacity."

News / CO2 emissions in Poland. Should Poland go nuclear or stick with clean coal technologies? [93]

China has over 3000 operational coal fired power plant units with another 1000 planned to be built this year.

They pay for it with severe air pollution:

ig.ft.com/china-pollution

That's why Trump said, "how can we compete by going green with countries like China who ignore polluting the planet ?"

"Compete"? In what? In a death race? I think you're lucky enough to live in a place that doesn't give you any idea what is a real air pollution:

deviantart.com/yuumei/journal/Going-to-China-439918589

"I'm looking forward to seeing how much China has changed. Though I'm not looking forward to breathing that air. Air pollution is such a constant health hazard that I had to buy hundreds of dollars worth of respirators for me and my grandparents. I will also be buying air purifiers (that's another five hundred dollars) for the apartment they live in. People think living in China is cheap, but that is until you realize being cheap comes at a cost. When the government and corporations cut cost on environmental regulations, the money they saved and pocketed for their own gains is billed back to the public in the form of pollution. The money it costs to buy respirators, air purifiers, and pay medical bills for pollution related health damages is way beyond the money saved.

RIght now, I am typing this journal in California. The sky is blue, the air is clean. I check the Air Quality Index everyday. And while my location is always below 50 (the good healthy zone), China's number is always between 200 (unhealthy) to 500 (hazardous). These numbers are a grim reminder of what unregulated industrialization does to the environment we live in. Even where I live in California, 1/3 of the local pollution is blown in from China. Pollution is not a regional problem, it's a global problem. So with that in mind, no matter where you live, be sure to do your share to help the environment. Be it as simple as recycling, or planting a tree, or making sure your government has strict environmental standards in place; anything helps."

If those Prietos don't know to not get greedy

They're not being "greedy":

nytimes.com/2025/01/02/us/politics/trump-panama-canal-china.html

"Mr. Trump also called the fees Panama charges to transit the canal "exorbitant." In fact, those fees are lower than for similar shipping chokepoints, though they have increased because drought has lowered the water level in the canal and the number of ships that can pass through.

Judah Levine, the head of research at Freightos, a logistics company, said that Panama charges container ships about $100,000 to $300,000 per transit - just a fraction of what the Suez Canal charges, even before the recent shipping disruptions in the Red Sea."

and keep in mind the US interest they have no right to rule over the Canal.

You're messed up.

I was quite surprised when I read it last night as Maf is generally a good guy

I was shocked, to be honest.

It was a meaningless bunch of slogans

No, it wasn't.

No, I'm not. Read the comments on this thread.

No, it isn't acceptable.

Chinese presence should be limited to ships going through.

Well, as I pointed out, the concession to operate those two ports was given to that Hong Kong company before the full control of the Panama Canal was given to Panama and before Hong Kong became Chinese.

CK Hutchison is a conglomerate whose largest owner is a family of Hong Kong billionaires, not the Chinese government.

So what do you propose to do with this situation?

Does that concession have time limit? Does it end? And even if the US took over the Panama Canal - that concession would still be valid and in effect. CK Hutchison has also investments in the US.

So how about some American billionaire buys that Hong Kong company and problem solved? 🤔

Youre WRONG! There, feel better now?

YES! THANK YOU! But so far you're the only American on this forum who clearly stated that he is against the invasion of Panama.

Nobody is planning to "punish" Panama.

Taking away something that provides income for such a small nation will be a punishment.

Poland invaded Iraq without any compelling reason that has to do with Poland.

I was also against the invasion of Iraq, as I wrote many times on this forum before.

You need to start reading comments on this thread. Are you blind? All the Americans on this forum, except for cms_neuf (or maybe he isn't an American?) and including you, plus one British (Miloslaw) and one Pole (Ironside) seem to be OK with the US invading Panama and are banging on how the US has "the right" to do it! 🤦

The US changed its mind.

Then Panama isn't responsible for American f*ck ups and shouldn't be blamed and punished for them.

Many women get happily pregnant and abort because they changed their mind.

That's the first I hear of it.

Some women kill their kids when they are 3 because they were not convenient.

And those women go to jail for that.

Panama granted a concession to operate the ports on both ends of the canal to a Hong Kong company back in 1996.

Wait a minute... Panama got full control of the Panama Canal only in 1999... So, that Hong Kong company got that concession while the US was still in control of the canal? And the US didn't mind back then?

Btw, for context - in 1996 Hong Kong was still British, not Chinese. 🤔

Trump has promised that if Panama does not accede to demands that it reduce shipping costs on U.S. freight

Didn't you read what I posted on the previous page?:

https://polishforums.com/news/poland-help-defend-greenland-imperialism-88764/6/#msg2009249

Panama is bound by neutrality agreement:

"Mr. Berg said the neutrality agreement made it unlikely that Panama would even be able to grant special rates to the United States."

Yes, in this case, I will support it wholeheartedly!

Then you are yet another hypocrite and a Nazi/Putinist-like psycho. And something like that coming from a Pole is doubly shameful and disgusting. Shame on you!

Only because he bit more than he could chew

Exactly. And it looks like that Trump has the support of PF bootlickers to do the same.

A few hours later, for some reason, he deleted his post.

So I'm guessing it's a fake created by RuSSian propagandists. Most likely it wasn't "deleted" - it's just was never posted at all.

It wouldn't be the first time we had to give them a tune up...

So are you going to be OK with the US invading a peaceful country? I'd like to finally get a straight answer to my question and not another "blah blah":

DO YOU WANT YOUR COUNTRY TO INVADE PANAMA???

I don't like his rhetoric but the aims are headed in the right direction.

So are you going to be OK with the US invading Panama and taking the Panama Canal by force?

Hey, stupid, we decide who is and who is not our enemy.

Said Hitler. And look at what happened to him. Not being in touch with reality doesn't end well for anyone.

Panama is charging the US more.

No, it isn't. That's a lie.

By this definition every country is an enemy

No, only psychopaths think in this way. People who see enemies everywhere often end up in a mental hospital or in jail.
