News / Do Poles in Poland really feel betrayed because there won't be any US Shield? [288]

many of them really admire Russia

Or they just prefer realpolitik....

And honestly I can understand russian suspicion and wish for safe borders...everybody with an inkling of history should.
I don't think on the other hand Russia has imperial ambitions as the british, the french or even the german empire once had who were nearly continously in other peoples countries.

(Not to mention the french, german and once also Poles who couldn't wait for an invitation to visit Moscow and brought their whole armies with them...)

so what was the threats of those Iskanders at the Polish border for???

A gamble against the Ami-missiles!
(I personally would had started talks with Castro instead...now that would had hurt them...)
;)

I just don't see any offensive measures Poland or America take against Russia for quite some time now

Trade is a better weapon than any isolation or agressiveness...believe me...

I firmly believed Russians deliberately fuelled the conflict.

Well Gumi...it's not only the Ossetians but the Abkhazians too.
They both begged Moscow for help against bully Georgia.
Both want their independence and take any help they can get and who want's to blame them for that.

I say...if you want independence for yourself and your own people you shouldn't deny it to others!

it does not really matter - they have some of their strategic nuclear weapons aimed at some Polish locations for sure - an empty gesture

You don't really believe they will nuke Poland any time soon, don't you?

they did invade Georgia - they did destroy plenty of infrastructure there including parts of Tbilisi airstrip - what is this if not an invasion?

Well...put the blame where it belongs, to Saakashvili...he startet it all and reaped what he sowed.
His plan was clear...attacking, betting the the russian bear would move, then crying to Nato for help as in: "Look...this monster is bullying little poor, innocent 'ol me...you HAVE to come and help me....can I become a member in the NATO now?"

It didn't work, period!

No one with a brain cell supports this nut anymore...even his own Georgians have enough of him!

csmonitor.com/2009/0409/p06s15-wogn.html

...Tbilisi, Georgia - Tens of thousands of Georgians protested peacefully in front of the country's Parliament Thursday to demand the resignation of Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili. ...

csmonitor.com/2009/0409/p06s01-woeu.html

Mass protests in Georgia aim to unseat Saakashvili. As many as 100,000 people are expected to demonstrate Thursday against the president.

BB - is South Ossetia part of Russia??? WTF were Russians doing on a territory of some other's state?

If I remember it right the South Ossetians asked them to....they were scared of the Georgians....

news.bbc/2/hi/europe/country_profiles/3797729.stm

...It came as no surprise when South Ossetians voted overwhelmingly in favour of restating their demand for independence from Tbilisi in an unrecognised referendum in November 2006. A simultaneous referendum among the region's ethnic Georgians voted just as emphatically to stay with Tbilisi.

Russia maintains close contacts with the leadership in Tskhinvali where separatists welcome Moscow's supportive stance. To Georgia's deep annoyance, most South Ossetians have Russian passports and the Russian rouble is commonly used in trade. ..

It seems the Ossetians want their independence, if not full scale integration into Russia...

sorry - what lie - did Georgia attack Russia?

Erm...I don't know about the polish commentators gumi but the international jury is quite clear in this case!

spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,641489,00.html

....
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili is preparing the Georgian population for the planned publication in September of the European Union's report into the five-day war between Georgia and Russia in August 2008. The document is expected to assign primary responsibility for the attack on the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali to Saakashvili -- with the qualification that Moscow provoked him....

spiegel.de/international/world/0,1518,630543,00.html

He gambled for the West's (yes, okay, the Bushies) support to get him into the NATO...and...well...he lost.

...However, NATO and EU experts have so far found no evidence to support Georgian claims that a Russian column of 150 tanks and armored vehicles had advanced into South Ossetia before the Georgian attack on Tskhinvali....

And it's crap anyhow!
On another thread he burdened our board Russian Sasha with the same kind of "eternal shame" he should feel because of what is grandfathers did (or not did).

Lodz is as racist as everybody, he generalizes and hates whole peoples if it fits his bias like everybody else.
And he specializes in "collective guilt" for whole peoples and their descendants for all times (all but his own of course).

The difference is everybody else is honest about it but him. He prefers to put on a tree hugging, goody-two-shoes, I love you all - face!

Probably feeling himself all good, enlightened and high above us other poor creatures.
But he is only a hypocrite!

I just don't know to whom he lies more..to himself or to the board!

You know Lodz, when you have a gripe with ME (Bratwurst Boy), then come out and discuss it with ME like a man. Don't hide yourself behind Hitler or WWII-allusions all the time!

But what can I do. When I hear 'Germany' I remember many things, many stories, a certain dear and beloved person in my family had a great grudge against Germans for very credible reasons.

Who cares...but it would be more honest to stop your inanely blahblah about "love" and be honest to yourself and the others...

Makes you look like an idiot, a hypocritical idiot!

The simplest thing in the world is love. The toughest thing is to love. The rarest thing is love. The most abundant can only be love.

Yeah...I can feel your love for me Lodz!

If there is a really sick thing it's someone pretending and preaching love and harboring hate and racist grudges against one other country anyhow.

You are worse than Crow or any other nutter on this board. They are at leat honest about themselves and their views, you instead are a hypocrite of the highest order...you fool nobody

boy!
Take your "love" and shove it!

In Berlin the gypsy women and children get quite annoying...they harass people, beg for money, dirty, always a little one on the arm, outstretched hand thrust into the face of some unsuspecting passersby, always some abstruse story barely understandably, getting quite agressive and abusive when not satisfied etc.

And you just KNOW that the men wait and observe behind some bushes collecting the money!
They have knifes...

A plague...

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Where did he (his family) get the name "Berlin" from if he is 100 percent polish???

This is a famous German and sometimes Ashkenasic surname. It is usually locational and describes a former inhabitant of Berlin who had moved somewhere else. However in the 18th century Berlin was also used as an abstract or ornamental surname for immigrants from Southern and Central Europe, who flooded into Germany, then regarded as the most liberal area in Europe...

...
The first recording that we have been able to prove positively is that of Hans Bernhard Berlin, given as being the Burger of Heilbron in the year 1407. He may be the same person who is recorded as Hans Berlin in 1414, also in Heilbron.

German past is German past not our past,

I fully agree!
That's why calling something german with a polish name still doesn't make it polish....

Not the castle...it was build by the Order as "Marienburg".

The Poles can't stand any reminders of their german past and renamed it to "Malbork".
They did alot of renaming after '18 and '45.

Now I am confused...who built it?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malbork

Founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights, the town is noted for the Gothic Marienburg Castle, one of the most striking in Europe.

yes, after the tutons occupied Malbork they renamed it

ROFL, THEY BUILD MARIENBURG!

...he town was built in Prussia around the fortress Ordensburg Marienburg which was founded in 1274 on the east bank of the river Nogat by the Teutonic Knights....

Sometimes I get the impression that when one takes out the polish things which are in core german there would be not much left...

...The town of Marienburg grew in the vicinity of the castle. The river Nogat and flat terrain allowed easy access for barges a hundred kilometers from the sea. During Prussia's government by the Teutonic Knights, they collected tolls on river traffic and imposed a monopoly of the amber trade.
The town later became a member of the Hanseatic League, and many Hanseatic meetings were held there...

The Hanse...another german thing...

And a world heritage site

Build in Prussia by the Teutonic order...should be a german world heritage site! :)

(But then, the other world heritage site, the city of Thorn, is from the Teutonic Order too...not so bad for a warrior order...)

Those Africans who left to conquer the world absolutely were! :)

Bergman is obviosuly of German or Yiddish origin

"Bergmann" is German and stems from the profession of a miner, a man who works in the Berg (mountain).
"Bergman" is the anglicized version.

Often a german name ending of -mann became a -man outside of Germany, that doesn't mean it's jewish!

could anyone tell me what the meaning of the surname von Czapiewski
means and where it come from

The "von" suggests german/prussian nobility.
The "Czapiewski" suggests the home of your family the moment they became nobility.
