Law / How much does the average Pole have in cash savings? [38]

Eurola wrote:

Unless, they are Polish Americans...then we have planty saved for a rainy day.

why yes, but of course. in a country of 300,000,000+, full of immigrants from every country imaginable and all walks of life, only the Polish Americans have any savings. The rest most certainly have thousands of dollars in credit card debt.

you people amaze me.

and yes, the overuse of "like" in America is annoying.

it's the same opinion most americans share. UK English simply sounds pompous, wimpy and fruity to us, especially when spoken by men. the sound of an irritated British guy simply isn't intimidating.

Life / SOME OBSERVATIONS ABOUT POLAND AND POLISH SOCIETY [297]

shush wrote:

I dont agree - I am Polish myself and what pisses me off sometimes that Poles would rather go every day to Polish restaurant with Polish food rather than trying something new. As it was said already they are sticking to what they know and they are looking at new things with caution. Not every Pole is like that, of course but lots and lots if not majority.

one cause of this is finances. anything with the Made in Poland stamp is considerably cheaper than anything else. I like to go to Alma because I can find food from other countries (which i greatly prefer over polish food) but it breaks the bank just to buy a few things.

i myself eat mostly polish food in poland simply because it's cheaper. much cheaper.

i kinda feel the same. in english, we simply don't do this sort of thing....sir/madam 3 times for every sentence when talking to someone we don't know, but i've gotten used to it while using polish....one thing i simply can't do though is use it with someone whom i know is at least 10 years younger than i am.

it always cracks me up when teenagers are standing at reception at one of my schools and the director is using pan/pani to a 15 year old kid.

Life / Are foreigners welcome in Poland? [267]

seanus wrote:

Poland couldn't cope with such a deluge of folk.

there's a lot to be said about this fact. it has a lot to do with why poland is what it is today.

people don't come here. to poland, that is. sure, the yearly krakow tourists and random group of germans coming to wroclaw every summer to see where their grandfather lived before Poland took it over, but otherwise, it can't compare to the influx of foreigners and vacationers of Western European countries. part of it is because those countries simply have more to offer, and part of it is due to the general mentality of polish people........a mentality that is less than appreciated by a foreign visitor (along with the fact that nobody speaks Polish besides Poles).

poland in many ways in recent history got the $hit end of the stick, but i've lived here long enough to know that if the country's mentality changed, you'd see a bigger and better Poland. as an American, the Polish mentality appears utterly myopic, xenophobic and nationalistic yet at the same time jealous while complaining about everything and anything. often times i want to say to my students, "Sooooo......do you like Poland....or not?"

regardless, a complete personality overhaul wouldn't change the crap weather of this country, another reason why most people steer clear of Poland.

i think as a foreigner, the longer you stay in Poland, the more of a love/hate relationship you develop. luckily i've met some really good people along the way.

poland is, in general, a racist country but much of it stems from simply not understanding other cultures. poland is polish, not much else. full of "ironside-type" people.

Language / Polish was chosen the HARDEST LANGUAGE in the world to learn... :D [1558]

Delphiandomine wrote:

I think we can agree that Polish, for an English speaker, is certainly much more of a challenge than French or Italian!......Quite simply, the best schools are looking to provide the best challenges for their children. It's the same reason that Latin is kept in the very elite private schools - it's not a language for stupid people.

do you honestly think Latin is taught in elite schools because it is simply "not a language for stupid people"...? they chose it only because it's hard?

I think we can all agree that if I was a rich man living in the UK and was spending thousands of pounds/euros per year to send my child to a high end private school, I'd want him or her to be learning a language worth knowing.

tight rope walking over a pool of alligators is more difficult than tennis....should they be teaching them that too?

melsomelyb wrote:

Level 4 (more difficult) includes Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Pashto and Korean.

roman alphabet vs. symbols/different alphabet....that's all that is. Polish is entirely more difficult than any of the above when it comes to forming grammatically correct, coherent sentences....which puts it right back at the top of the list.

congrats to this dude from Africa who can speak a bit, but this is a perfect example of Polish people saying someone can speak Polish.....when they really can't. you wouldn't brag about someone in your class who speaks B1 level English....so why highlight someone speaking AT BEST B1 level Polish?

TV interviews are edited, questions are prepared, they only show what went well, and even the things he said were nothing impressive. he's below FCE level and his pronunciation is poor....and has probably been in Poland for YEARS.

great post though....gets us back to the main topic of this thread and supports the theory of "hardest to learn" or at least "one of the hardest to learn".

your weak educational system made you unable to meet and learn foreign cultures and languages. And you have to smomehow explain to yourself your weekness. I understand.

first and foremost, you must be joking if you think Poland is the place to meet and learn "foreign cultures". 98% Polish, 99,99999999% white.

secondly, the educational system you speak of, whether it's good or bad in general, they don't push language like it is pushed in Poland because it simply is not a necessity. why spend all that time and money to learn a language you cannot use. i've yet to meet a single American that got hired based on their language abilities.

in Poland, you study foreign languages because you have to. a 25 year old Pole entering the job market with no English, German, French.....your options become veeery limited.

language is a necessity in Poland, in America, it's not even a passing thought for most people.

Polish Tutor wrote:

Each year more foreigners learn Polish

and as a result, more and more people give up shortly after they start learning. I'd hate for my client base to be solely the few brave souls willing to duke it out with Polish grammar till they actually learn it (or an expat like me who is marrying a Polish girl and has a ton of motivation to learn it). It's simply not a dependable client influx, but if Poland continues to get more and more foreign investment, you can hope to still get the fresh off the boat "well, i'm in Poland, maybe i'll take some lessons!" crowd of learners......whereas they quit out of frustration 3 months later and take up English instead because that's what they use at work anyhow.

etc. etc.

i know the sheer number of English verb tenses can be a bit tedious to start, but you simply can't compare them to Polish.

let's see:

I will have......future perfect.....now insert ANY past participle of ANY verb, and you are set. Change the person from I to he, she, we, they, etc. etc., no difference.

Have you had....present perfect.....same story. insert ANY past participle of ANY verb, use the same I, we, he, she, they, it, you.....on and on.

Polish? you chose byc? ok.....

jestem, jestes, jestesmy, jestescie, jest, sa, bylem, bylam, byla, bylo, byl, bylismy, bylysmy, byliscie, bylyscie, byli, byly, bylbym, bylabym, bylby, bylaby, byloby, bylibysmy, bylybysmy, byliby, bylyby, bylibyscie, bylybyscie........bede, bedzie, bedziemy, bedziecie, bedziesz, beda......badz, badzmy, badzcie, bedac......on and on.

and we haven't even mentioned "bywac".

imagine how big a task that is for a Polish learner when a new verb is introduced.

once you hear a new verb in English, you can immediately insert it into a sentence using any person, any tense....all you need to know are the present, past and past participle forms. 3 things to remember per verb. the rest.....all English verbs follow the same damn pattern.

English most certainly has it's difficulties, but it's 100 fold easier to use and learn new English verbs compared to Polish.
