USA, Canada / My grievances with the American-Polonia [54]

Most forum Poles living abroad left Poland 30, 40 years ago and still believe it should remain what it used to be in the past.

Surely, they miss their youth in Poland and their then projections of how Poland should look like. They left Poland as young adults and began to write the new chapter of their life. At the same time Poland began to write her own new chapter. And these two chapters seem to be completely different stories now, plus their chapter contains those projections on Poland I mentioned earlier.

The result is that the views of Poland shared by the Polish emmigrants here on PF are most often hilarious in the eyes of us, Poles living continuously in Poland. Those Poles who were actually born abroad (for example, JR or Mr. Grunwald) have never been charged with their weird projections on Poland, so they are emotionally in a much more better shape feeling no need to describe people in Poland as soviets or such like. The rest like Ironside, Dirk diggler or Przelotny Ptak remain in their strange Wonderland of their projections, so we, the real Poles of Poland like Pawian, Lenka, Kaprys or myself, will never be able to get near to the Poland of their mental projections as it wiil always look like some strange and foreign country to us.

Polish National Heritage Month

Damn it! So they've dug out the corpse of Kazimierz Pulaski and declared he was a woman?

If that's Polish American Heritage, please exclude myself from it.

It was Kopernik who was a woman and not Pulaski, you brainwashed American fools!

Language / Game - guess Polish idioms/sayings in direct English translation [1756]

read all stories as a boy

I did too, but not in English. In the 1990 I bought myself a volume in English, but then I found the language too hard for me. Now I am reading the Kindle version where it is so easy to look up the meaning of every word in the Oxford Dictionary of English attached to the Kindle.

Simultaneously, I am reading Marshall B. Davidson's "The World in 1776", a brilliant account of trends, events and main actors of the 18th century and the Age of Enlightenment in America, Europe and the UK. And I found the language of several passages excessively complicated.

Dać komuś zimne ramię.

Wonderful! No idea what it could mean. Very English, I would say.

On a side note. I've just started to read Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Study in Scarlet" in English. An amazingly modern language and a very pleasant to follow. Is anyone here fond of Sherlock Holmes?

News / Poland rejects international criticism over LGBT rights [28]

They already are against her.

Fvck Konfederacja! Despite her 73 years of age, Ms Mosbacher still has a womanly look and a lot of Broadway allure in her personal style.

I can only say that tolerance belongs to Polish DNA," Morawiecki said at a news conference

If this is the case, why would the American ambassador bother to issue such a letter and persuade other 49 ambassadors in Poland (including that of Venezuela!) to co-sign it?

It is worth noting that US ambassador Georgette Mosbacher, this colourful American bird of tolerance and freedom, has become the face of that letter in Poland. Pictures of Ms Mosbacher have been shown in all TV channels' news bulletins here in Poland as the illustration of the news on this letter .

It is also woth noting that Ms Mosbacher as a nominee of the Trump administration can hardly be labelled 'leftist' or 'libtard diplomat".

- "You are on the wrong side of history" - said Ms Mosbacher with connection to the matter in the interview to the wirtualnapolska.pl .

Thank you, Ms Mosbacher, for promoting freedom and tolerance in Poland.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

I mean native speakers, like Omenaah Mensah ...

If you expect them to give their testimony here, you may wait years if not ages. I told you I read some of such people's opinions on the matter and they differ in the same way as difer the native speakers whose skin is not as dark as theirs.

"mulatto" just like Barack Obama

Then why does Johnny Reb frequently refer to him as Obongo?

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

does anyone know what black (or partially black) native speakers of Polish think about 'murzyn'?

Their opinions appear from time to time in the social media and on various portals. I think those are divided. I read opinions of both types, but those blacks who don't think Murzyn isn't racist were very good speakers of Polish, whereas those who do seem to be sort of fairly recently arrived in Poland.

To label Murzyn a racist word is a recent trend within the so-called political correctness, so the younger generation would be more more inclined to follow such an attitude. In my view it is a qualifier which is being attached to this word because saying so seems to be en vogue. Despite clichés such as 'Murzyn zrobił swoje, Murzyn może odejść' the word did never have a racist connotation for my generation. If you refered to someone as Murzyn, you only meant a perfecty neutral fact that the person has a black skin and so looks very differently to the rest of us. Only when you described them as 'czarnuch'. it was obvious that you look on a black person with contempt.

It may have changed now due to the work being done by certain circles who question past habits and so have decided to attribute to the word a new meaning.

In my view it looks ridiculous as there still exist very positive connotations to the word in literature which is taught in schools, like for example, the poem "Murzynek Bambo".

Thus, in the present state of affairs, you may believe what you choose to believe.

Language / IS "MURZYN" word RACIST? [686]

This the term that our dissatisfied Pol Am friends use about native Poles in the forum

If they do, they do it wrong. It can only be applied to a Pole in the US.

I've never considered the word 'Murzyn' racist as opposed to the word 'czarnuch' which is racist. Btw, does anyone remember this litle verse?

Raz Murzyni na pustyni urządzili sobie bal.
Jeden trzymał, drugi dymał, a trzeciemu było żal.

Language / Short Polish<->English translations [1049]

Which book does this quotation come from? It would be best to translate it into modern Polish first before translating it to English.

The word 'żułć' (moderrn form is' żółć) means something like 'złość, nienawiść' here. The word 'medium' means 'sposób'. Here is my translation into modern Polish:

Ciężko, a wręcz niepodobna, skłonność [pęd] do nienawiści i pasji [miłości] powstrzymać. Te dwa szczęścia, a raczej nieszczęścia, są tak ze sobą spojone, że nie ma sposobu by je rozłączyć.

In other words, the author says that hate and love are the two sides of the same coin and if a person is inclined to follow one path, they will be equally inclined to follow the other as well.

Do you think a reform is needed?

There's a lot more discrepancy between pronouncing and spelling in French or English and both of them have been surviving in very good shape.

all who quoted you perfectly understood your intentions.

I'm afraid not. My point was to indicate it was useless for the community to sue the culprit as he sort of advertised their proud stance on the anti-LGBT agenda. But the community felt offended instead. .

Of course, my intention was meant to be ironic showing some schozophrenia in the community's attitude. Nevertheless, neither of the participants, including you, has taken up this point of mine.

I wonder why they are doing it

All people quoting this phrase of mine thought I meant the communities declaring LGBT-free zones, whereas I was wondering why one of the comunities which did this was taking the project of the guy taking pictures to court.

So, even if sued, they will be absolved due to low criminality of the act.

The community of Zakrzówek (where the hell is the damn place?) is sueing Bart Staszewski for his project "LGBT free" zones with regard to the community of Zakrzówek.

I wonder why they are doing it rather than being proud that someone advertises the community's new image which thanks to his action has now become famous in many parts of Europe.

Here is the link to the "Atlas of Hate", map of Poland which shows communities declaring themselves as LGBT-free zones (in green areas that rejected the proposed anti- LGBT resolutions).

The future Great Sarmatia - do you envisage it an LGBT free zone or not, Crow?

Liberte, Equalite, Fraternite

I hate it when French is spelt without proper French diacritical marks: Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité. To obtain the é from an English or Polish keybord, simply press Left ALT + 130.

Quoi qu'il en soit, all the rightards here must have been born before the time of the French Revolution or even before the Age of Enlightenment began. Thus they don't understand the idea of human rights.

News / The Fur is Flying! Animal Rights in Poland [87]

Fortunately for the world he was stooped back in 1914.

Thank God the Austrian-Hungarian Empire collapsed and the Habsburgs themselves were even denied entry to Austria for many many years after this infamous collapse.

killed almost 300.000 animals just for sport, fur, bone and corpses. He loved to kill and kill and kill.

I don't think this fact is widely known in the so-called "rotten West" or even in Austria itself. Instead, they all naively believe that Gavrilo Princip was the sole factor behind the outbreak of the WW I. Hahahaha.

There is absolutely no need for natural fur coats. Artificial fur does look nice, so no need to satisfy the vanity of morons and certain celebrities.

Do Donald and Melania wear faux fur?

Language / Polish versions for English words? ! [34]

Again American and British varieties are evolving mostly independently of each other

Brits are exposed to vastly more American usage than the other way around.

Given the communication facilities that exist in the modern world, it wil be interesting to see if both versions of English evolve to the extent that they become unintelligible to each other one day.

For me as a non-native speaker British English and American English have already become different languages orally, but they are still unity as far as writing is concerned.

He is not. I think he genuinely doesn't know the British versions of some words. One English lady once told me she went to America and used the word 'fortnight' there, but the American people whom she spoke to didn't know the meaning of that word.

History / Battle of Vienna - history movie about Poland / Commemoration [36]

Those who didn't sleep on history lessons and finished elementary school do remember :-)

Those who didn't sleep in history lessons would know that the Habsburgs "re-paid" Poland for that kind deed of Jan III Sobieski later on, in exactly 100 years after the event, by initiating the first partition of Poland in 1772. In 1768 Austria had taken over the Spisz and the Nowy Targ regions under the pretext of making a sanitary buffor zone on the borders of Austria to Poland. It was at that time precisely when Cathrine II of Russia said: "if they may have a free hand in grabing Polish lands, why not us, too?" (Read Władysław Konopczyński on the subject who first found out links between these events). Four years later the first partition of Poland followed and within the next 23 years Poland was erased from the map of Europe completely.

If the Ottoman Turks had crushed the head of the Austrian Hydra in due time, the Habsburgs wouldn't have been able to act as an initiating agent for Poland's partitions and they wouldn't have become one of the grabbing force as well. What's more to it, the Ottoman Empire would have made a much more demanding force towards Russia which in turn would have weaked Russia's stance against Poland.

You guys see everything through the eyes of today's politics, but history has a lot of different shades. And not all shades are taught in history lessons, Spike, so if even you don't sleep at that time, you don't get everything from your teacher.

That was a good time to buy Tesla during it's correction

Tell that to people who were buying at the high of $500. Were you?

That's why we call it the Wall Street Casino, Ziemo.

Did you detect any signs of an approaching slump in Tesla shares beforehand? I suppose that the 50-day moving avarage has all that time been above the 200-day average. Or is the stock now trading below those two moving averages?

the Nasdaq fell into correction on Tuesday, retreating from record highs seen just last week.

I think the market is very likely to be in an upward trend all the time since cash is constantly searching for new assets to be thrown into. See above for my remarks on the monetary policies of the Federal Reserve.

The market took a huge hit today.....worse since the virus shutdown.

These days Tesla has hit a $330 low. A free fall from about $500 a share at the end of August it seems.

The current monetary policy of the central banks in the world including the Federal Reserve means that various assets are likely to grow overpriced and prone to speculation on a larger scale. Allocation of resources has greatly deteriorated due to the low and even negative interest rates.
