Po polsku / Polska miedzy Niemcami i Rosja. Zalety i wady. [512]

News / Poland's PiS party members and crime [346]

Interesting what he'd be able to spy

he had access to secret documents as a judge in an administrative court - he gained this (official) access back in 2012 afaik -

here's an article msn.com/pl-pl/wiadomosci/polska/s%C4%99dzia-szmydt-od-dawna-na-celowniku-abw-mia%C5%82-by%C4%87-rozpracowywany-przez-kontrwywiad/ar-BB1lXNnN?ocid=BingNewsSerp

I wonder what prompted his defection

he was a Russian agent/spy - the ABW started investigating him before the last election afaik - arresting him was considered by the ABW some time before he escaped (so yeah the first Tusk's ABW major failure)

News / Homosexual lobby steps up infiltration in Poland [110]

The marriage rate went from 80% down to 30%.

the divorce rate in America (afaik women are 4 to 5 times more likely to initiate divorce than men) is probably because of unrealistic expectations towards men on the part of women (in my opinion fuelled by modern feminist indoctrination - I read briefly about the waves of feminism and this recent one isn't helping anyone), coupled with the tendencies that you mention (women getting half of the couple's wealth, child support and alimony)

they must be lesbian man-haters?

I don't know maybe it's just a specific sample of American women on the internet, but it looks like plenty of American women have unrealistic expectations towards men (mainly concerning money and looks) - or maybe I just watch not the right vids on youtube

Law / Gun control in Poland: should Polish people be allowed to own guns? [1024]

Your own death doesn't happen often but we make plans for it.

I can assure you that things you described don't happen in Poland (like jon said - I haven't heard of such incidents in Poland, either - unless we are talking about some war scenario -tfu tfu) - so yeah your comparison does not really make sense here in Poland

ok. after some thought: there used to be such things in Poland back in the 90's (abductions, gunpoint robberies) and early 2000's - however I haven't heard of any such occurence in the last 10-15 years (unless it was some gang violence but even gang violence is much lower than 15-20 years ago)

UK, Ireland / "Strange " English language.. [264]

that means "do you want me to close the window?"

this is as much as I figured - didn't know about it not sounding very natural(?)

Pompous ass Brits go:

I see - still, their usage is etymological - shall meant in the past what should mostly means now as illustrated by contemporary Danish (don't know about Swedish and Norwegian) "Skal jeg gaa til skolen" (Should I go to school)

Anyone who says "shall"

I have seen sentences like "Shall I close the widnow?" in English textbooks - is it not how English native speakers talk now?

full of zombie rules that no one follows....

Life / Poland and the neighboring Baltic States [5]

And does Poland trade much in the Baltic block in general?

I don't know about the volume of the trade - however many products made in Poland have descriptions in all languages of the Baltic states on the packaging if this is any indicator

interact much with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Lithuania is probably the most visited of all these and mostly Vilnius (Wilno in Polish) - one thing: proximity; secondly: Polish heritage - besides Vilnius, Lithuania is fields, forests, lakes and the Baltic - we have all of these in Poland

for Latvia and Estonia the main attraction for Poles would also probably be their respective capitals (the language barrier in the capitals is the least I would presume because more people speak English there - the national languages between the countries are very different - even Latvian and Lithuanian which are related are not quite mutually intelligible)

I don't personally know anyone who's been in these places, though - but I live a secluded life on the other end of Poland (though I have seen videos on youtube made by Polish travellers to Vilnius a couple of years back)

Life / The climate for gardening in Poland [340]

In the 20th century the lowest temp of -18.8 degrees was recorded in Kildare

I guess then temperatures in the Wicklow mountains would have been much worse, Kildare is just next to the Wicklow mountains, isn't it (just nobody lives there in the mountains)

While the lowest temp ever recorded in Ireland was - 19 C in the year 1881. Amasing!!

the temperature of -19 C was probably recorded somewhere in the mountais of Ireland like the Wicklows

Life / Primary Education in Poland - Changes Made to Homework? [15]

Tests at home aren't tests.

they are tests if the teacher takes time to check if the homework is done

also don't acquire a skill by simple looking (a lot of the time - I certainly didn't) - you need some training and this is what homework is for (unless parents are stupid enough to do their child's homework instead of the child)

Life / Primary Education in Poland - Changes Made to Homework? [15]

Those with more chaotic family lives

skills should be tested - within a 45 minute unit with 2-6 units per week how many kids can be tested in the class? - hence homework and in-class tests - having said that I can say that Polish kids could use a lot less history and geography lessons (especially history as tought here teaches the wrong lessons)
