Language / Road Madam = dictionary Polish [23]

"siad"

I was frequently given commands such as siadaj, chodź and drink. Surely Polish people don't command their dogs in English to take alcoholic beverages.

Food / What are you having for your Polish dinner? [33]

barszcz

I'm too lazy to find a recipe, but not too lazy to actually try cooking it. I have just painted about half of the walls in my kitchen and the floor is strewn with various tools and boxes of stuff, and I still have no work surface on which to prepare anything.

My local greengrocer does have raw beetroot though. So perhaps soon I will be able to give it a go. But, as I said, I am lazy. Could someone send me a recipe within the next couple of weeks?

I'll be having something un-Polish this evening.

Birthday Dinner Ideas?

I want to make a surprise Polish dinner for my Polish friend's birthday but I'm not really sure what I should make. I've looked at all kinds of recipes but I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what I should make for this special dinner. I'm also planning to make a birthday cake. Any ideas :)?

If I put a suit on, I'm smart. If I do a poo in a neighbour's garden, I'm not smart.
I've never seen a dog in a suit, but you can clearly see from what I have typed here, that dogs are usually at least one up on cats.

That's what I think, or what I know, as a normal 18-years-old Polish language user

You had to say that, didn't you!

Do cats say miał?

I dare you to approach the first Spanish or black you see on the street and to ask him to show you Poland on the map.

Now you point out to me on a map where are:

Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Yucatan and Lake Titicaca.

UK, Ireland / Benefits for separated Polish wife and 2 kids in the UK [90]

Some of my comments may have looked negative. They were. But I was responding to something else that was, as I read it at the time, also negative.

I could repeat what I had already said about growing up in a family with two working parents who managed to claim a small amount of child benefit.

I could mention that amongst the people I count as friends, some are immigrants or children of immigrants from both Europe and beyond.
I describe myself as an open-minded liberal. Liberalism in its true form does not mean blindness to the greed of others (there are many worse cases than the one we are discussing here though). It is also not an act of charity.

her plan is to work part-time cleaning in a hotel, and learn English

Perhaps I could have taken comments like this into account. It was more the attitude of "what can I get" that annoyed me. Get yourself a job, make yourself useful.

Please don't give me a lot of talk about how she shouldn't be coming on the system

That's asking a bit much isn't it? A tall order for the kind of responses you will get.

Just because British citizens can claim welfare benefits, the idea that these people are all a drain on the system is an idea that tends to get blown up out of all proportion. When I was a youngster, my parents claimed child benefit (although this wasn't much), but at the same time I had two working parents for most of my childhood. Having said that, since then I have received NO BENEFITS WHATSOEVER, and I work to pay (rightly in the majority of cases) for others to receive benefits, and hopefully when I retire, they'll give me enough to buy a potato every couple of weeks.

So the children can see their father? How much interest does he have in them if he disappears to another country. I know that ideally every child has two parents, but (and I quote the hysterical mother who occasionally appears on the Simpsons) what about the children? Moving to another country for the benefit of being closer to a father who fled in the first place? It doesn't appear that way to me.

I'm happy for European citizens to be free to come here and work. "How much can I earn?" but to ask "How much will I be given?"

Am I just in a bad mood this evening or what?

Life / First Racial Attack for me in Poland [158]

On a night out in a Polish town with some Polish friends (who were all speaking English for my benefit), we passed some lads who started shouting something along the lines of "What language are you speaking". There were a couple of retorts from the people I was with, some in Polish, but one memorable one in English: "None of your f***ing business!"

Nothing else happened after that. But maybe if I was unfortunate enough not to be with some locals...

Sorry Griff. I think it could happen just about anywhere though, and unfortunately there's nothing you can really do about it.

Every night with a hammock, a beer... and a rake?

I understand. I've found myself doing some late-night gardening after a few drinks. But not every night!

UK, Ireland / Polish food in Cambridge [10]

I don't tend to look in the frozen sections of supermarkets. I've seen plenty of things in jars though. Only yesterday, I found some kabanosy in Waitrose, and for once they were like proper kabanosy (or so I am led to believe).

Have you tried looking in the Yellow Pages for a Polish delicatessen or other kind of food shop. There must be something in your neck of the woods.

Crow, what are you opinions regarding the following subjects:

The West Lothian question,
The heritage and culture of Scotland versus that of your beloved Scordiscs,
Russia's historical and current treatment of different nationalities and ethnic groups,
Bagpipes, haggis and kilts.
