Everything depends on the point of view...

Not really everything.
The 3 month long spells of -30C in Toronto have nothing to do with a point of view. They just don't happen.

unny how you got yourself into yet another long, drawn out argument about temperature aphrodisiac....

Actually, I also find it funny. Especially considering the fact that she tried to poke fun at some of the views Poles take for facts, and she did that by offering yet another myth that is not reflected in reality. Herself being Polish... there must be something to that myth making indeed.

I didn't get into any argument because I am not as anal as some posters:)

It just felt that way.

If it feels that way, it is that way.

In general the climate here, on both sides of the border, can be pretty crazy and the high humidity will at times add to the discomfort.

Called Lake effect. Are you leeward or windward of the lake? Leeward (Buffalo) lots of snow, windward (Chicago) not as much. But temps are reversed, Colder in Chicago (especially with the wind).

Regardless, in my 20 years here I haven't seen one single instance of grape growers heating their grapes any time of the year. Not once. And I drive by those fields almost every day.

Southeast Ontario??? But in the fruit growing sections of the States they use smudge pots in the Spring and Autumn.

this thread is not edited, since the editing time is 15 minutes on PF and I don't like to edited stuff since it looses some of its freshness. I am aware of grammar and spelling mistakes on this thread, but I will not change anything at this point. Later on I might put this on a blog and then I will take my time to edit it.[/b]

thanks for reading:)

We know...thanks for writing.

which is a warmer then Southeast Ontario, thanks for confirming it.

They use heaters in Niagara vine region and Dariusz missed it, but THAT is NOT the topic of this thread. I suggest Dariusz upgrades his info from his own region and get off the car every so often. Please take this discussion to PMs. This thread is about moving back to Poland. Thank you.

so let's do that. back to Poland......

as far as weather is concerned, how cold it was there vs. here, that's not going to be your worst problem IMO. the problem is simply being in Poland during the winter vs. being in a major city in Canada. I always feel as though in Poland, you simply can't escape being outside and dealing with harsh temperatures, simply due to the infrastructure of the country. Albeit I don't have a car which makes it extra hard but even with a car, but in Poland you will always have to park farther away from where you need to go and less of your friends and family are going to have driveways right at their house to minimize cold exposure.

the point being, even if the weather is -10C here and -20C in "the west", it's still more difficult to deal with -10C here.

Theres some truth in that, personally i prefer to have to brave the elements a little bit. You cant but wonder after another few thousand years of cars parking in shopping centers and electric blankets whether the human body would evolve into an even more fragile state than it currently is.

Perhaps sir would like a remote control wheel chair so he wouldn't have to walk to his car.

I personally did not find the temperatures in Poland as harsh to deal with as much as the luck of sunshine. There are very few sunny days between end of October and March. When it's cold I just dress warm. If there is no sunshine for a longer time, I just get depressed.

It is already starting. Many people do't have the immune systems any more to cope with such differences in temperatures. Very odd how dependant a species we are becoming. Think what we would do without our mobiles, internet or electricity :D

How is the weather today in your area of Poland aphro?

I would do just fine. I think a lot of people would be much happier without internet and mobile phones, and actually get in touch and interact with eachother, just like we did in our early teens. I still remember the first couple of cellphones in Holland, and how everybody thought it was ridiculous. (Cellphones existed before that, but of course average Joe couldn't afford such things back then.) Electricity would be cool to keep though.

it was raining in the morning, then it cleared up, but now it is half past five and it is as dark as night;(, but still warm and no wind. How is the weather in Scotlandia.

Lived in Szczecin prior to my departure to Canada, but I had never been to Szczecin Cemetary, which is the third biggest in Europe.

Today is the day. The weather seems nice and my friend is gonna drive me there for a short visit.

here is a link for those who are interested:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Cemetery_in_Szczecin
The Central Cemetery in Szczecin is a municipal cemetery in Szczecin, Poland. It is the third biggest cemetery in Europe, and the biggest cemetery in Poland. Today the area of the cemetery is more than 167,8 hectares[1], and is still extending.

and some more interesting info:
The Central Cemetery in Szczecin was established in 1901[2] as a new and very modern cemetery. It was modeled on the Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg, Germany. At that time Stettin (Szczecin) belonged to Germany. Even though the Central Cemetery in Szczecin has been opened for more than 100 years, it is still in use, and it is a legally protected national monument.

Most of the weekend....rain, today the skies are blue and the sun warm :) Gale force winds tonight and more rain while I travel - lovely!

I never thought that it could be such a problem. Warm clothes, shoes with thick sole and grok always did it for me.

I must admit that I'm not too fond of January and Ferbruary... it has to do with the post-christmass/new years eve depression, but in march everythng slowly turns back to life, etc so it's all good in the end... :)

naturally someone was going to make a "lazy american" dig but if you knew me, you'd think twice....maybe three times before making a comment like that.

let's get one thing straight: my running shoes see no less than 40 kilometers a week, regardless of temperature. if you lived down the street from me, you'd see me whizzing past your apartment routinely in the winter, regardless of temperature or amount of snow on the ground. I grew up in NJ, a place just as cold as Wroclaw with 10 times more snow. bitterly cold weather and snow is old hat for me during a 10K run.

i simply don't like to deal with it when i'm in nice clothes and leather shoes on my way to work. crap weather ruins your pants, your shoes get completely destroyed and your feet get wet and cold, blowing your nose constantly, shivering waiting for some filthy tram or bus to show up....no thanks.

when I'm running, bring the pain. when i got a 30 minute walk to work in nice clothing, cut me some slack.

not to mention bacteria/virus cesspools. i do my best to hang on using my wrists but when the tram shakes unexpectedly and you gotta grab on with your hand......naaaaaaaaaaasty. that, and I could swear that MPK manufactures their trams so that straight out of the factory, they are already impregnated with the scent of pi$$ and body odor. they should put that stuff into spray cans and sell it at Militaria, would be great for fending off would-be attackers.

gloomy weather
is what is outside at the moment. It is overcast, rainy, musty and damp.

This weather is typical at this time of the year and I find it quite depressing.

Hopefully it is not going to last for a long time.

There is also winter ahead, but I guess I will deal with it when it comes.
green space in Szczecin

I already mentioned one: the Szczecin Cemetery. I visited it yesterday afternoon and it was quite impressive. The large area has a lot of different species of trees and as I mentioned in my previous post, the designed is quite interesting. It is a nice place to go for a walk and one can actually bike there. It is charming and mysterious and one can walk around all day long since it covers over 150 ha.

Zeromski Park
youtube.com/watch?v=Ok4-Y_xQhbE

near my place is another old and created by Germans Park, which area amount to24 ha, which is quite large space found in the center of the city. This is where I wanted to walk the dog I am getting in the future. It features many old trees and when I take a walk though it actually looks more like a little forest. I am so lucky to live by a place like that in the center of the city.

Jasne Blonie
is another green area behind the City Hall
pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasne_BÅ‚onia
with a beautiful platan tree alley.

Platan tree is quite popular in Szczecin, which has the highest number of them in Poland- 213, so is the Magnolia Tree.

it's going to last a long time. you live in poland.

deal with it you will, indeed.

although, i'm anticipating the day in January/February next year when it will be -11 in Krakow, but according to you, +11 in Szczecin ;)

At this time of year when the weather starts turning to sh1t the best pick me up before the winter is to trade in the car and buy a newer one. This will have the effect of making your neighbours more jealous and envious, thus allowing you to wallow in the fact the weather maybe miserable but you have a new car, while for them the weather is miserable and you have a new car and they don't.

Now you have completely forgotten about the weather. :)

Are there any indoor swimming pools in Poland? I fight the winter blahs by swimming. Works like a charm. When I'm in the pool I think I'm in the South Seas.

As for the cold. Well I make my living working outdoors and once you acclimatize it ain't bad. Also, proper clothing makes a difference. People who lived before central heating dressed for the seasons. Something we forget in modern times. Wool in the winter which stays warm even if it's wet.

I grew up in Poland so I am accustomed to the weather here and if I survived the Canadian winter, I will survive the Polish one too, since I have many in the past.

Szczecin has always been warmer then the rest of Poland......can we move on?

aphrodisiac, you say this:

and then you say:

I grew up in Poland so I am accustomed to the weather

i'm generally confused by this.

oh yes.....warm and toasty.

anyway, we most certainly can move on, i just hope, along with some other posters on here (let the record books show) that you start being a bit more consistent with weather related posts.
