Expat Poles swearing allegiance to the US - how did you feel?

guesswho 4 | 1,274

Why would you swear allegiance to a country you don't support?

Why would you even live in a country you don't support?

It was an honor and a pleasure and I'm proud to be a part of this nation"

Amen. Good man. And thanks. ;)

Its very simple. If one comes to America and does not support it.. No big deal.. Get the hell out.

Exactly.
What we need to do also is evict some of the traitors in our midst.

If that isnt brainwashing i dont know what is.

Answer B. You don't know what is.

Patriotism gets me every time

I'm guessing someone like you doesn't feel loyalty to anything.

With all due respect

You have no respect for anything or anyone. See here:

Shut up idiot.

...said the biggest angry idiot here.

Id like the opportunity to live in the USA

Stay over there. We don't want your kind.

For monetary gains, the same as you immigrant.

I'm guessing someone like you doesn't feel loyalty to anything.

Guessing would be correct.

You have no respect for anything or anyone.

Its almost time out for you old chap, come on move over and let that other old guy use the computer for a while.

Western Canada, but the visa issues - dude its complicated and bloody expensive for me.

I've heard it's the hardest to become a citizen of Australian and New Zealand, but Western Canada Vancouver is filled with Asians. Are you a Polish citizen? you've been there for a long time right?

does Poland recognise dual citizenship? (genuine question)

Polish law does not explicitly allow dual citizenship, but possession of another citizenship is tolerated since there are no penalties for its possession alone:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_nationality_law#Dual_citizenship

I think that explains it, it's tolerated. What i don't understand is Karta Polaka issued to people in their 80s and 90s, must simply serve an ideological purpose.

No. Anyone with Polish citizenship (or who can be claimed as a Polish citizen, the so-called "passport trap" - unless they're formally renounced their citizenship/right to citizenship) is treated as a Polish citizen while on the territory of the Republic of Poland. It's also an offence to identify yourself to the Polish authorities using a non-Polish document - which is where the "passport trap" comes in.

No. Anyone with Polish citizenship.

So how about 'half-breeds', where only one parent is Polish?

Another successfully brain washed citizen, job done by the powers that be. You'd totally kill for your country wouldnt you? regardless of whats morally right..

Patriotism gets me every time, the right to feel superior based on the lottery that is ones place of birth, or in the case of many American's - an adopted country.

You over analyzing it. No i don't feel superior and i wouldn't kill for my country blindly. I have a freedom to decide.

a lot of people doesn't understand the rights and freedoms they were given here. I don't see a point in trying to explain this to you now.

Patriotism is perceived differently here then in Poland.
Some of the examples of what's considered patriotic here in the US are:

- raising the determination or morale of their fellow citizens during hard times
- displaying the national flag,
- singing the national anthem,
- participating in a mass rally,
- placing a patriotic bumper sticker on one’s vehicle,
or any other way of publicly proclaiming one’s allegiance to the nation.

if you think that being patriotic is all about killing blindly then may god help us all.

Disclaimer
that if there is a god, i don't want to accidentally "brainwash" anyone into thinking that there is a god.

you never know with people like you around.

Nothing changes, as long as the parent was a Polish citizen at the time of the birth. It even extends to the grandchildren.

Very proud and grateful. Then I put my money where my mouth is and joined the military. That way if needed I'll be able to help even those who hate it here and feel like traitors such as marynka11111 and other "citizens against their will".

I won't get into discussions on what it really means to me as many of you already have a preconceived notion of our country and probably wouldn't understand; it's very hard to explain so I won't even try. I was a kid when I left Poland, I loved Sweden and still do but I never felt any patriotism toward Sweden, in fact I've never met anyone who feels patriotic in Sweden or Norway; there's the "who gives a @&$!" camp or the "what's in it for me?" society (the vast majority) and the "Sweden über alles" nationalists who mingle with the neo-nazis. That's it, no middle ground.

The notion of loving your country while respecting others simply didn't exist. I traveled a lot and saw the very same sentiment all over Europe, Germany in particular where many still are guilt-ridden over ww2 and think loving their country equals nationalism whereas in my view it's patriotism.

I can't ever imagine a Swedish or a European politician say: “Don’t ask what your country can do for you. Ask instead what you can do for your country” – I think the European version would be something like “Don’t ask when your next welfare check will arrive. Ask instead which taxes we should raise for you to keep receiving it.". I'm being facetious of course just to make a point.

The way Europeans feel about respecting and loving their own countries is the way teenagers feel about studying. It simply isn't cool, instead it's the rappers and dead-bangers who earn respect of the teens. (I'm generalizing to illustrate my point)

I'm totally ok with many of you not feeling any for if allegiance to your respective countries, to your culture to anything at all, that's your choice and I respect that. So instead of branding our way as a form of "brainwash" maybe you should at least try to respect our way. By our I mean those of us who were proud and embarrassed or ashamed on that day.

So to recap, how did it feel? It felt great and thank you for asking.

You already killed blindly for your country

I fought for this country and I took the oath in the service and I would do it again

For that you are a brain dead fcuk head IMO. Why did you serve? what was the reason for you killing? if you actually killed at all.

- raising the determination or morale of their fellow citizens during hard times
- displaying the national flag,

Youve been in the military as if America didnt brain wash you enough, fcuk sake.

Very proud and grateful. Then I put my money where my mouth is and joined the military.

You killed too SkySoulMate, dont tell me you dont lie awake at night thinking of all those innocent people you bombed to death. Youre a killer mate, dont come on here with all that love America shite, youre hiding dude - big time.

Still brain washed by the media, hey listen its not your fault. Hell i couldnt live with myself for killing somebody like that.

What's an illegal war?

I must admit, I don't understand this either.

America declares war on Iraq. America kicks ass. The end.

Their call - it's perhaps a moral issue, but I fail to see why a war needs to be "legal". It's war!

Right there you proved that discussing things with you is pointless. Maybe instead of creating a thread where you pretend that you're curious about other ideas and perceptions you should create a Wroclaw Boy Monologue thread where you tell everyone else how you view the world and if someone doesn't agree than he/she is "brain dead fcuk head."

The screen name is a combination of an old call sign and what some of my friends called me. I'm not proud of any killing but if called upon and I feel its justified I will. I'm done "discussing" this with you as obviously discussion is not what was on your mind when you started this thread.

Quite right. And if peeps want to get technical, our president declares war and it gets approved by our Congress. So nothing was "illegal" about it.

According to what you just said, you must have also left UK "for monetary gains" too, right?
I understand your frustration. It must have been a pretty messed up feeling to live as a poor guy in a relatively rich country as the UK. At least now you're surrounded (mainly) with people who are in the same financial situation as you.

As far as me being an immigrant, well there are some people on PF who know me personally, ask them before coming to some kind of wishful thinking conclusions. To be honest, I don't care what you believe. It's not like there would be something to be ashamed of even if I was from Poland.

Perhaps, but then again perhaps thats just how i express myself. Maybe i dont know any other way, youve killed ie dropped bombs on innocent civilians i swear a little here and there.

It's not like there would be something to be ashamed of even if I was from Poland.

Indeed, but it is ironic when you talk up the USA so much and even here coming to the rescue of your so called patriots. What really gets me about you is the fact that you make classic (Eastern European) English written errors whilst talking up the US like its your home country..

with some things i agree here, with some i do not....
i see in Poland how people love their country, and i see in the US how people love their country... and i wish that Poles loved their country more...

life is life, you never know where you are going to end up living, but you don't chose the place you're born... and i would also say - you don't like it? so get out.... just like to any foreigner living in PL and b!tching about it....

It's funny how you Brits react when you hear Americans talk, lol It was the same bs in Lublin. There was a pub where all of the, so called "native speakers" used to meet every weekend and I remember, it was the same ole crap as with you now. Get over it man, we're not Brits.
