Erm....they too were sauerkraut-munchers....:)

If you want to go back to the fifth century, everything's up for grabs. Which country has remained completely homogeneous and 'culturally/ethnically pure' for the last two thousand years or more?

Fact remains that it was the descendants of Anglo-Saxons, Norman French and Celts on the British Isles that had one of the biggest empires in history - not the Germans.

You don't take over huge swathes of the planet by being soft.

That was then...Now, Brits are like Germans...pussified limp-wristed remnants of what they used to be ...able to fight off the best army ever in 194x, but impotent to stop the invasion by smelly blacks and Muslims on inflatable dinghies... Still dreaming of defeating Russia...hahahahahahaha...a bunch of morons...

They aren't even allowed to say: Hey, azzholes, get the fvck out of here...You know...hate speech...hurt feelings...A crime in the UK...

There are 30 Berlins in the US, but only 17 Londons.

But there are Los Angeles and San Diego... 🤭

And New Orleans, but you'd hardly say the US is part of the Francosphere, would you?

That's why the US will accept Alberta, but not the French-speaking part.

that had one of the biggest empires in history

... and they lost it. Just like the French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Belgians or the Ottomans.

Actually, the only country in the world that still holds on to most of the lands gained in their imperial conquest is Russia. They lost some borderlands after the fall of the Soviet Union but are still the largest land empire in the world.

You live in a country where schoolchildren get gunned down all the time because you're too greedy, cowardly and crazed by ideology to stop it. I would shut up if I were you. "Oh no, the police might visit me because I've been a racist c*nt on the internet" - boo hoo, worry more about all the small coffins.

We are all Germanics!

If we're talking about relatively recent developments. Before that you were all Serbs.

and they lost it. Just like the French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Belgians or the Ottomans.

And the Romans, and the Mongols.

You are being very charitable to include the Belgians, though, who basically had one gigantic rubber plantation where they managed to squeeze a huge amount of atrocity into a relatively small time. Impressive work for a county otherwise only notable for paedophile rings, chocolate and a statue of a boy pissing.

But, digression aside, to have had a huge empire and lost it is still an achievement. Look at the Italians. They have done nothing for a very long time except produce sports cars, tacky fashion, fascism and very overrated 'cuisine', yet they're still coasting on the glories of the Roman Empire.

But our languages have Latin in them, and the richest countries in the world speak English. Not German or Polish. So I think we, and even the lazy greaseball mummy's boys in Italy, deserve perhaps a bit of respect. And yes, the USA is DEFINITELY part of the Anglo mir.

Na ja.....time is an achievement in itself.....and all our modern Empires, also the british one, has been more or less only a few centuries old blips on the human timeline compared to the more than 2000 years of the Roman Empire...its hard to compare them!

Who knows what people will read about them in their future history books...and if they will read it still in English.....

"I am Ozymandius..."

In truth, this has become a little sidetracked. The British Empire was a relative blip, but like the Romans, its cultural impact is undeniable. We are speaking English here right now. English is the world's lingua franca, and the USA and its legal systems etc, like many other countries, are based on our civilisation. What can the Germans ever claim? Lidl and Rossmann. No cultural relevance, they are still a province, for all their current economic might.

The USA is part of the Anglosphere - the Anglo-Saxon mir. The world we created. And it is still the richest and most powerful country in that world.

Yeah....enjoy the time.....I read the hispanics will take over...

Not to mention that your modern English is a combination of Latin, French and German....it will change again soon...that's how languages work, they evolve!

And if the US will once in future centuries count in the same line as other human Empires needs to be seen too....that is not for us to decide.

But...what exactly do you want to prove here today on PF?

What can the Germans ever claim?

Well, in my part of the world (frm-USSR), we had a lot more exposure to German, rather than Anglo influence.

Germans designed the architecture of the Russian imperial state, and provided much of the leadership - from the military to foreign affairs (Pyotr Lacy, Count Nesselrode). They were prominent in science, and in geography.

Russian borrows many more words from German, than from English. Until recently, the only two foreign languages we were taught were French and German.

In addition to its shaping influence on Russia, Germany played a big role in shaping the look of things in Turkey (Ottoman era, and in China - under Wilhelm).
