You can't apply for work permit - only employer can do that.

An employer is a party to administrative proceedings which means that the person who submits application for issuing such permit is the employer wishing to employ a foreigner and not a foreigner himself/herself. A filled in application for issue a work permit for a foreigner together with required documents should be submitted at least 30 days before the planned date of employment or renewal of foreigner's employment.

Probably the advice doesn't apply any more since the UK is no longer in the EU. It must have caused a lot of headaches and bureaucracy for Poles working / living in the UK.

It makes no difference, since clearly the OP is from elsewhere.

Probably from Leeds where the British media send their own foreign correspondents to cover local news stories.

Leeds

Unlikely.

Rather pointless to send 'foreign correspondents' since around 8 or 9 out of every ten people in that region (including students) are born there, unlike your 'home' across the Atlantic.

People from Uzbek, Kazakh, Azerbaikan and Armenia are getting work permits all the time
If you get a company to sponsor you then you won't have a problem
