Poland in the European Union. Polexit?

but I thought Germany has kind of awakened to wanting to conserve it's specific culture-

One issue is that France believes that its system and culture is something that should be applied more widely.

Wouldn't a deeper integration compromise that?

As ist is right now for sure....

The civil traditions between....say central and north Europe are so different....there is an awareness that a deeper integration is so not possible....the EU has become to big for that. The doubters of the recent expansions have become right in hindsight.

The Euro crisis has put a spotlight onto it.....the "thrifty" northern Europeans, namely Germans, being forced to pay for the "slacking" South....that won't get any better in the near future as the EU is now more than ever poised to hand out money more freely than before....

These alle are unresolved conflicts....which have to be resolved one day....and in my opinion you can't shackle together what doesn't fit together.....some countries have similiar traditions and understandings and can work very well together and a deeper integration would make them stronger, better....and others not!

But I can only guess here....but that the EU has a problem is a fact. Just one example....to become better capable at acting in many lesser important questions it would be enough to implement a majority decision....but it's not happening, for that you need ALL member states to agree...but one or two will always say "no".

And so that to big, to clumsy ship, quarreling stumbles on.....it doesn't work anymore....something has to happen!

something has to happen!

Is there much of a push within the EU to dilute the current grandiose scheme and pare it back down to simply a trade union?

I've never been able to see how the current scheme of the EU as a supranational organism could work. Too many disparate parts (disparate might be too strong a word) with deep-seated organic traditions and histories independent of one another; even though there are many shared traits among Euro nations, those differences shape the identity of a people.

those differences shape the identity of a people.

If you pay them enough, they will shed their identities.

I've never been able to see how the current scheme of the EU as a supranational organism could work.

It could have worked....before the expansions! There are not only a few Germans who think back fondly as it was only them and the other founder countries...

But for that plan of old the EU just has become to big....probably led by the naive dream that in time there will be a kind of nivellation happen which will erase all these differences between our countries. It was an illusion, and not even wanted by the majority!

That vision/dream is now being chipped away, slowly but surely....it's an ongoing painful process. In consequence those voices who think a Europe of two speeds would be better become louder. The current bruhaha with Poland is in that regard only a symptom of the underlying problem!

But it will all still take awhile till that transforms into real actions...nothing happens quick in the EU! :)

Novi, I can see the epitaph you'll have on your tombstone:

Eff it! It's all sh!t!
P.S. All you blacks, gays, illegals, women, leftists & rightists can go eff yourselves.
I'm out!

That underlying problem being...? Supranational interference with domestic concerns?

..with an engraved raised middle finger...

:D:D

That'd be the perfect grave monument for good ole Novi.

And everytime someone walks past his grave a sensor will start a recording of him yelling "Get the F@#! off my lawn!"

If EU continue like this, Poland would simple annul its Kosovo recognition. Over night strategic situation in Europe would be changed.

It would be like when doctor put finger in anus of his patient. Poland would play role of doctor and EU would play role of receiver.

That is to say the least unlikely.

It is most likely if EU push Poland too far. It is trump card with which Poland stops all pressures on Poland. After that west of Europe would think what is next if they continue to pressure Poland.

The moment Poland align itself with Serbia, complete Geo-strategic situation of Europe shift. Its a biggest fear of western Europe.

Hungarian Orban knows it. He knows that Serbia hold keys of Europe. Not Germany. Serbia. Russia and China are behind Serbia and certainly Anglo Protestant magnates of the USA. Like Trump.

if EU push Poland too far

In what way?

Orban's a bigot who's forgotten that the world has changed and continues to change! The homogeneity of the past no longer applies and the only way to remain a good, competitive neighbor will be to integrate and include!

Sweden, Germany, Great Britain etc. have all had to abandon their ideologies of the past, whereby a more or less single, same population was met with few of the challenges we face today. That no longer remains a viable option.

That no longer remains a viable option.

Luckily, Orban doesn't read PF.

to integrate and include!

Who do you want to integrate and include and how many is too many?
Who is excluded now from Hungary?

The Sinti-Roma, any remaining, unassimilated Jews, etc...
I wonder if Orban is truly an educated man or merely a party hack more than likely.

The Sinti-Roma, any remaining, unassimilated Jews,

Where are they now?
How many of them are there?

etc...

Who are these people?

Sinti-Roma,

Across Europe, there are around 11 million. More than the population of Hungary.
