on catholic schools they attended.

This means they have to take a break from organised religion coz they had too much of it - both at home and school.
It is perfectly natural and I have never told them one bad word about it.
But I am sure they will return to it one day coz mature people usually tend to relive their youth by evoking the experiences they had then.
