Travel / BUS FROM SZCZECIN TO FRANKFURT....HOW MUCH...? [18]

Can anybody tell me what the fare is from Szczecin to Frankfurt

If your're not short on time and short on money I'd reccommend travelling on saturday or sunday - one day ticket valid on all trains in Germany (express ones excluded) costs ~ 35 euro and is is valid also for trains departing from Szczecin. Ticket can be bought on train train or at the station an is called Schones Wochenedne. 5 ppl can travel on one ticket.

Study / Studying in Poland in English [35]

Would it be a drawback since I cannot read or write well. Are there classes given in english

There are classes in English but your choices for school would be limited.
Yes, it would be a drawback since students are required to read and write......if you are good enough to put your thoughts on paper they wouldn't mind spelling or grammar mistakes ( I think )

Consider 1 year preparatory course for students from abroad, there are many.

News / Juwenalia - holidays for students in Poland (updated) [20]

We had lots of sport games at juwenalia in Poznan mostly in football, valleyball, basketball, ping pong etc......Archeology-International Business , Architecture - Dentists and so on. Games were taken very seriously but many were too drunk to make impact. Overall AWF used to take - no wonder - all the trophies and Akademia Ekonomiczna all the beatings.

Genealogy / Polish surnames - Origin and Meaning [26]

Those who had Ski or Sksa ending were not necessary wealthy but rather noblemen (szlachta) - at least according to "popular history".

BTW:
WALERIAN TREPKA in 16th/17th century had written LIBER GENERATIONIS PLEBEANORUM, It contains a list of people of plebeian origin who attempted, by one illegal means or another, to become members of the nobility.

Life / Electronics in Poland - what kinds are popular? [20]

Kids are more respectful toward adults here. They say "good morning" and give way on sidewalk. It is not like teenagers go harassing someone on bus (I've seen it while in US several times). They are here loud and go as far as smashing bus garbage container on way out, running away. :) Unlike in US you are also not on your own when in trouble, you can count on some help from others in public places.

I don't mean to smash US kids on street here lol Here though they are not so eager with their fists. Verbally though many here are strangely fascinated by prison life and cheating and stealing. I guess it is similar everywhere in inner cities.

They are less aggressive then in US I think.I noticed we also have grils only groups hanging on streets. Something not so visible a year or two ago. They get this empowerment from media I think as we have had recently some shows, adds making fun of males. They are all but nuisance to cleaning people but generally harmless and polite in fact.

In my neighborhood it is cell phone with mp3. They'd gather around, listen and spit sunflower seeds around, cursing a lot. There's some craze going about small motorbikes now as we have cheap imports from China. Sending tons of sms a day, too is hot. Those are 11-13 by my judgment.

History / Pole, Hungarian, two good friends [58]

I remember football qualifier some years ago between Poland and Hungary in Budapest. Polish crowd of some thousands had this huge banner saying "Poles and Hungarians two brothers to fight and drink together" - lots of cheering for both sides in this game.

Work / Cheap Labour in Poland - why is there a problem with unemployment in PL? [16]

300 000 apartment my schoolmate friend bought a year ago. He's paying off his credit somwhere around 2000 a month. That is affordable if you have that kind of money handy to buy it for cash maybe. Year ago he was paying 1600/month, now 2000 and it is going to be more next year experts say. He's making 5-6000 a month now but what if he's laid off? Planty of jobs to make your 2000 but that would kill him and make his bank happy.

Unemployment figures are fake as we have shadow economy where many don't reveal their income nor employment and remain registered unemployed to keep health insurance benefits.

The guy in Koluszki survived polar bear attack. The bear jumped on him while he was sleeping in his tent and he managed to get it off of him and shoot it . I wonder where he had his gun from. Anyway it should be a warning for all you tourists planning to visit Poland early spring.

Increase in crime in wroclaw especially on foreigners. Best not to have car as you need the garage, otherwise car will disappear.

Also don't wear a watch when in public.
