no doubt your partner speaks good English, this can be a deterrent to learning if she is acting as your interpreter.

Not entirely sure that is true. Outsourcing. At the company where I worked (in IT) the full-time and contract programmers were gradually replaced by placing the work they did with non-UK companies.
