History / What was better in Poland under communism? [67]

Russian customs. For example, a three kiss greeting on the cheeks.

that's not a russian only custom.. many slavs, greeks, italians and arabs to the very exact same thing.

Nothing was better under communism, thank God it's long gone...

that's not true..

People felt more secure about their future? What a joke!

as funny as that may sound, that is actually true

Pol3, do you always wake and bake? ;)

pretty sure he does.

You not seen the Onya range of bags?

no, the somewhat resembled onion bags.

Get a life people.PRLwas NOT a communist country!

you're are plastic as that is just a dumb statement as one can ever find on these forums

Calling PRL communist is kinda ignorant considering definition of communism.Only westerners call it communist but they have no clue what PRL was about.

by strict definition of that term, there has never been a truly communist country.. btw. not only westerners called the eastern block communist.. the rulers of poland called themselves communist too/

This is quite true. Most here think of P-Land a having been Commie back then.

it was communist tho

You must have be from the otter planet!

he is..

from what i gather, maybe some education was better?

Life / Cold winter in Poland this year - Gas Shortages as of Late October [32]

Anyway when is heating by coal going to be made illegal?

what do you propose to use instead?

Yes, and it isn't gas.

what is it then? coal? lol

I heard this winter will be a severe one.

the weather men are never right..

I am sure she wouldn,t lie to me...????

lol.. didn't you say she was a 1/2 roma? she's spinning you a yarn, mate. lol moscow is way colder then pomerania.

Reason for the post: Why is Poland purchasing nat gas from the heavy handed Ruse-ski's after what they did to the Ukraine in what was it, 2008? Cutting off their gas supply. Looks like it's going to be a cold winter.

what is PL supposed to do in the mean time? building the other kind of infrastructure will take a long time.. in the mean time you want everyone to freeze?

Life / Why Polish people should be proud of being Polish? [370]

Don't say kartoflane!

that's right.. they are ziemniaczane.

As a Scot, I have to disagree. Poles have designed/invented some amazing things and have shown their ingenuity time and again.

agreed

News / RHD cars in Poland - my campaign to change the rules in Poland [128]

We have more freedom in the US than you have anywhere in the EU but no state would ever let you drive RHD car.

huh? ever seen a postman out in the country?

harry, r u as big of a dolt as you seem? so, according to you speed limit, for example, is m/h? lol and distances between towns in meters too? lmao

Can you register RHD cars in these states?

can you try to use reasoning to come up with an answer? sheesh

For example - gays are a minority. I hope this will help you understand why driving on the left is gay :-D

good 1. :D

Real Estate / If you own a property in Warsaw, you don't own the ground it stands on! [9]

Another strange Polish law today is that in the countryside, farm owners each owns bits of an access road leading to other properties running through them.

that depends.. there are 3 different ways of land division (cadaster) in PL.. they pretty much match the partitioned lands.. (Aus, Prus, Russ)

I'd say that it is a good thing - it's their property. I'd say it is very democratic

not really, it's retarded.. it should be public land.. aka. right-of-way or easement

But on the other hand, what would you say if one day they decided that they are demolishing your house because they want to build a new road? :-D

they still can.. they meaning gov body..

Buying half of szarlotka acres to build a new housing estate to rake in wads of cash from developers is not a valid reason.

in american however, this happens all the time.. it's called imminent domain. it used for good and sometimes not so good.. i've seen it under the guise of redevelopment of a run down area..

In some countries there is also some the concept of road allowance.

in the us it does (right of way) but the land interest may extend into the middle of the road.. in parts of PL, it's exactly the same.. there are dedicated roads that are simply public..

Language / Is math in Polish different than in English? [59]

zetigrek

there are some excellent schools in the usa.. most of those are private though.. but some public schools also have good programs in them. it's just different.. the way you learn things is different. in the usa all schools work kind of like uni.. you cram one subject at a time.. at high rate.. in PL used to learn a bit of everything at a time.. building on all the subjects every year.. to some extent you have that in UK and USA too, but like i said, it's fed to you with a bigger spoon. i learned almost all the math (algebra, geometry) in polish grade school that they teach here in high school. same thing with most of sciences.. although the HS sciences were more in depth.. but by not much. i did end up graduating from a private high school here and it was, for the most part, harder (more demanding) then my education at the uni.

Does the school programme differ very much? Or are you tought the same thing in different way?

not sure about now but my polish education was way, way more advanced then what i was "learning" under UK system and in the states.. pretty much bored out of my gourd most of the time.

News / RHD cars in Poland - my campaign to change the rules in Poland [128]

Poland not to allow me to register my Right hand car in there country.

lol.. glad they won't.. and you ought to go back to skool.. your english is rather terrible for a british bloke. hmm

as you can see by my address i live in poland

you may have realized by now that PL is a LHD country and they do use kilometers too.

I have a specail adapted car as i am a disabled driver and i need my car.

i am sure they already told you that you're more then welcome to adapt the LHD car.. it's not hard at all.

? if i have to sell my car who foots my bill to adapt another car.. cost will be 12000 pounds.can you let me know as soon as possible?

you should be able to get this done from profits from the sale of your current car. what kind of adaptations cost #12k?

How on earth does one change gears with the left hand? Seems inconceivable! I'd probably end up shifting into reverse at 30 km/h instead of 2nd gear.

the rhd cars pose a much bigger hazard on already dangerous roads of PL.. shifting ain't all that hard... besides, i bet his car is also an automatic.

Genealogy / Looking for any and all information on Dabrowski/Dombrowski from Poland [87]

I have, without any luck tried each new idea, and am still looking.

that is not what i have heard now more then once..

Uh...why don't you just type "Dąbrowski/Dąbrowska" into facebook? There's plenty of them around, I know at least 4!

and there are hundreds and he's not related to most of them.. but one would have to follow up on clues that one comes across, from time to time, to figure out who is whom.

Language / Is math in Polish different than in English? [59]

I have a new Polish girl in my class. She is intelligent and seems to be good at maths, but speaks very little English.
Is math in Polish different than in English?

rotflmao, brit education system must be as "great" as american one is.

Numbers are the same in any country.

you may want to check that mr math. boy, this thread sure is magnetic. lol

The Arabic numerals are (sort of) the same,

they really aren't

History / Lwów, Wilno ... kresy - Poland have lost enormoust part of our heritage... [389]

Nathan, most Poles I have talked to balk even at the mention of Lwów being Ukrainian. They criticise Russia for large-scale imperialism but don't acknowledge when they themselves partake in it. They still see it as a part of Poland.

that's because it was polish for a long long time.. not just interwar..

Absence of Poles there shows immediately the nature of their presence on these territories

that's aft4er upa arses killed a huge amount of poles..

Or you prefer this?:

and what's wrong with that?

(following your suit, be kind to provide nothing of polish source)

there is a german one above here.

Life / Passing your Polish language and culture to your kids [74]

its irrelevant, the child may speak also his mothers language, acquired naturally ...

what is irrelevant is the mother's tongue if that is not where this child lives and will live... it's up to the mother and the father.. if they don't feel the "need" then who cares, really?

She is was just being ignorant, with an obvious chip on her shoulder - no offence....

bibz, most definitely.. otoh, f-stop, not so much.

I don't believe that for a second!

just because you don't believe surely doesn't mean it's not true.. lol.. like you are some kind of authority on anything.. lol

may regret that.

may or may not.. how about you quit preaching and judging people, eh?

I'm not judging, just stating the obvious.

yes, you are judging.. you can back pedal on this all you want but it's there for all to read. haha

If only, it could be useful to have the Polish passport.

he doesn't need to speak polish to hold a PL passport.

I know, it's life. You can't predict how it's going to be but I still think that knowing ANY foreign language is beneficial for a kid. If only for the brain development.

obviously it didn't help you any.. too bad.. :)

I seriously think that not speaking to your child in your native language is idiocy.

your child native language may not necessarily be the same as yours, no?

Well, if he was surrendered by English speaking environment, he wouldn't speak with polish accent anyway, and that is that, eh!

not necessarily at all

Maybe there is a difference between those that leave until the economic situation improves and those that emigrate "for good"?

and some don't care to assimilate while others want to.

Wroclaw Boy

well said. lol
