News / What impact will Donald Trump's election have on Poland? [331]

anti-Serbian propaganda in mass media

Do you seriously believe that the entire US (or western) media just wrote whatever the Clintons told them to?

defended Europe and Poland with it.

Defended Europe and Poland against whom?

News / Jesus Christ is Now Officially the King of Poland [164]

Maybe they are taking their cue from the French surrealist Alfred Jarry and his play "Ubu Roi" . It is a parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth with bits of Hamlet and King Lear tossed in. "The action is in Poland, meaning anywhere" . Here is the plot.

Ubu kills Venceslas the King of Poland and all the nobles; " I have the honor to let you know that in order to make the kingdom richer I will kill all the nobles and steal their money". Ubu's henchman gets thrown into prison; he then escapes to Russia, where he gets the Tsar to declare war on Ubu. As Ubu fights the Tsar, his wife tries to steal money that Ubu has stashed in the palace. Ubu has, in the meantime, defeated the Russians, and has also been attacked by a bear. Ubu's wife pretends to be the angel Gabriel, in order to try to scare Ubu into forgiving her for her attempt to steal from him.

When that happens the rich will start a world war to get the economy going again, kill a 100 million people to stop global warming and all will be well again.

Currently, temperatures in the Arctic are 20C above normal (-5 instead of -25). And if 2016 is confirmed as the hottest year ever, it will mean that 16 out of the 17 hottest years ever recorded would have been in this century

Off-Topic / New Anglo-Polish alliance in the making? [55]

I don't think it's that popular nowadays.

I am not too sure. One only needs to look at the uproar triggered by Unilever when they tried to raise the price a few weeks ago..

Off-Topic / New Anglo-Polish alliance in the making? [55]

Do you actually know anyone who eats it??

Yes, me! And I am not even a Brit!! The key is to spread it very thinly over buttered toast. If you put too much, then the taste is too strong and it becomes not edible

Tea 'with milk' on other hand, has a lovely golden colour or a very dark brown depending on how strong the infusion of tea is before the milk is added

Used to have my tea as above before I moved to Poland in 2005 and saw the light ; now I would not dream of having it any other way than the Polish way. It is also how they drink it in Turkey; they should know, the Turks being by far the largest tea drinkers in the world

News / V4 (Poland) wants Serbia and 5 others in EU [60]

Other countries have made sacrifices like Poland which does not lay claim to the Lwów region, nor does Germany plan to reclaim Breslau.

The voice of reason

Every issue that involve Poland is emotional to me, to all of Serbians, as far as I know. Nothing that say or do Anglos, Germanics or Franks or even Russians can`t affect my emotions as that what say or do Poland.

That sums up very well your pbs Crow: too many emotions, not enough rational thinking!

Study / Turkish guy to study at a university in Poland. Is that problem for Polish people? [139]

If religion is necessary for a person to feel comfortable and content with their life, it is not my place to judge it.

Perhaps hair is evil and must be covered up

Not as dumb as it might seem. In many civilizations, hair (especially female) was (is) considered to have some "sexual" element attached to it. And today we all wear covers on our pubic hair, at least in public. So where do you set the boundary??

Life / Opłatek, not presents, epitomises the true Polish Christmas spirit [85]

There was no such thing as "Turkey" during his lifetime, nor would there be for hundreds of years.

Well, I was obviously referring to the geographical part of the world which is now Turkey. But we can be even more pedantic than you, Dominic B. Let's call it Turkey, formerly know as Lycia, Asia Minor, part of the Roman Empire ( abbreviated as Turkey, fkaLAMpotRE). And we can start doing the same for each reference; for example, Boadicea would not be born in Britain, but in England, formerly part of the Roman Empire (England, fpofRE)!

To be sure, present-day Turkey was Christian long before it was invaded by the Muslim Crusaders.

Indeed, and before this it venerated the Greek and Roman Gods, and before this it was pagan. In fact, both the Christian period and the Muslim one , which both lasted around 1,000 years (the latter one still ongoing) are small blips if one takes into account that humans have been living in Anatolia for at least 10,000 years

@dolnoslask

You are right Dolno, but Crow wrote: "France banned statues of Holy Mother from public parks"; Note the "s" (statues and not a statue) which implies that this is a general rule, which it is not. The case you a referring to is a single case in one city and the court made the judgment because the installation of the statue had been funded by municipal funds without a proper vote/decision by the council. Very different, no?

@Crow, & Dolno

Unfortunately, when you read the full article (in French, sorry), you will see that it is a little more subtle than what the headline in English says

lemonde.fr/societe/article/2016/12/03/haute-savoie-la-justice-ordonne-le-deplacement-d-une-statue-de-la-vierge-d-un-parc-communal_5042930_3224.html

And Crow, if there is trend, it is going in the opposite direction right now; Fillon, who has good chances to be the next French President, is a staunch catholic

+1.. although having "In God we trust" as their motto makes the US a mildly convincing example of separation between church and state..At least, it is true that both deeply religious people and complete atheists can feel at home in the US ..

@Polonius3
The statue was commissioned from public funds by the mayor of Publier without a debate and decision by the council. So a group of inhabitants of Publier attacked the decision in front of the judge (tribunal administratif). That is what triggered the whole case.

News / Poland's political crisis deepens [228]

They throw grenade into the house and then sit back and watch as the Poles argue over whose fault it was, and it is working perfectly because Kaczynski is such strange man that he's more obsessed with fantasies and revenge that splits and divides Poland, rather than the bigger picture

+1! As good an analysis as it gets!

dear Crow

To begin with, it is funny not fanny. Not at all the same meaning.. Your dubious mastery of English is indeed...funny

My polish wife, who lives in Turkey, believes this is another Putin provocation. I disagree with her, but she nevertheless still believes that you are some kind of FSB troll!
