History / Life in communist Poland - personal relations [397]

There were so any strange things..

Being non Polish, I remember taking my first railway trip in Poland with my Polish wife in 1987 from Warsaw to Krakow. At some point, the train stopped for long minutes in the middle of nowhere. I asked my wife what was going on; she said something that I still remember, we were waiting for a goods train to pass, they had priority over passengers trains. This added for me to strangeness of communism, it was the first time I heard this; in the western world, passenger trains always have priority. Maybe this is an allegory of communism, priority given to production over people!

UK, Ireland / From Hertfordshire, UK to Śląskie, Poland - Are we crazy? [35]

Precisely, that's what I mean, maybe I wasn't clear enough. If the OP intends to relocate to Poland and he doesn't get Polish citizenship, his life might become very difficult if there is at some point in time a Polexit, just like staying in the Uk without British citizenship would have been very difficult for my children..

Citizenship for you - why would you want it?? You're Irish, you're an EU citizen, you don't need it.

Having lived with the family in Poland (Warsaw) for almost 6 years (2005-2010), I would second almost everything Atch wrote.. except the part above re Citizenship. In addition to our stint in Wrasaw, my family and I also lived 8 years in London, between 1993 and 2001. Being French and my wife Polish, my wife talked to me in 1999 about getting British citizenship for our children (at the time, you could apply after 5 years of residency, don't know if it's still the case). I said to her "what for, they already have dual French and Polish citizenship". In the end, I gave in ( as always :), and am very happy now that I did. Two of our children live and work in London, and if they did not have British citizenship, Brexit would have been a real nightmare for them. True, a Polexit is not on the cards today, but who know what the future has in store?

News / Do you support a wall on the Polish East border? [15]

Start shooting the invaders which would solve the problem within three days.

Isn't that what they used to do on the Berlin wall? True, they shot at the ones wanting to leave rather than get in, but this didn't stop others from trying to escape...

News / E.U. Denounces Poland's Authority on LBGTQ Free Zones [150]

Seems the backwaters is where the Polish Christian live and the big cities is where the over educated immoral pagans live.

indeed, same all over the world. That's why you probably live in the sticks, dear Johnny

Life / How are electric cars doing in Poland? [413]

@cms neuf
Kids make a huge difference, so does where you live. My wife and I shuttle between two abodes, Paris and a place in the countryside, and all our 3 cars stay at the latter

News / Poles say a big YES to our European Union [957]

Do you know who you remind me of Crowie? Philippulus the Prophet, in the Shooting Star, Opus #10 of the adventures of Tintin and Snowy! For those who don't know what I am talking about, here is the link: images.app.goo.gl/Kye9qJ4x2jzQ7ic37

Love / What Do Polish Women Think Of French Men? [26]

A friend of mine buys only French cars coz they seem so romantic to him.

Or maybe it is because most of them are made in Central and Eastern Europe nowadays? My French car is made in.. Romania, but I also have a German one and my preferred one made in Britain (pic attached)

News / What should Poland do with the problem of Belarus? [1694]

Why Poland isn`t capable to openly point finger in Germany and EU for this?

Crowie, no one points a finger in, but "to". Maybe you tried to do such a thing and damaged your brain in the process, which would explain a lot :)

Real Estate / Are the property prices in Poland too high? [19]

But this type of attitude is not only linked to old PRL times, it is also cultural.Unlike the Brits or the Dutch who are first and foremost traders, the inner psyche of a Pole is that of a peasant/landowner, who has no clue about offer and demand and what a market really is/how it functions. Hence many real estate owners in PL prefer to sit on unlet houses/flats until they meet a prospective tenant ready to pay their price (someone will turn up one day !) rather than adapt (ie lower) their price to where the demand is.

Real Estate / Residential real estate values go down in Poland [455]

Indeed that was our bet when we built the house 11 years ago, plus the fact that Warsaw will continue to grow fast, given that it is currently undersized if you compare to other capital cities in Europe, its population being less than 10% of the population of the country. And since the house has been let ever since we built it, we are in no hurry..

History / BEATS OF FREEDOM - A HISTORY OF POLISH ROCK MUSIC [106]

The Stranglers were my favourite but like many bands at that time they were not really a Punk band

Agreed. Went through a month long Stranglers revival in June, and replayed most of their songs. I was not a big fan of them in the 70s( probably because of Cornwell's tendency to eruct rather than sing) but some of their songs are brilliant 'Down in the Sewer and its keyboard riff..). Pity some of the lyrics are plain misogynistic and even flirting with paedophilia..

When I moved to PL in 2005, I discovered Dzem.. What a great band, went to see them several times in concert (Stodola in Warsaw..); even have memories of being drunk and singing Wehikul czasu late one night (or rather early one morning) with clients in Ustron :)

News / Scandals, conflicts, tensions, arguments - real life examples from Poland [439]

He said: a small man (Kaczyński) divided Poland into two parts. It is a crime. Such acts led to nazism in the past.

I think it is an utterly stupid comparison. I 'm no fan of PiS or Mr K, and disagrees with most of what they say or do, but such comparison discredits the speaker and just ends up feeding the ambient paranoia
