beer

Not "beer". Anything that has a 9 hour "brewing" process from wort to bottling is not beer.

News / Should Polonia and expat Poles lose voting rights in Polish elections? [63]

I did. When I was in short trousers. I decided that the black and Asian boys in my class were no different to me, and neither was Marek, an 18 year old Polish boy who came over to Nottingham from Warsaw one summer, and he had 2 pounds in his pockets that an uncle had given him.

This populism nonsense and blaming ills on others will be the death of us all.

On many important matters Poland is so far ahead of the West :-).

Yeah? Well when I came back here to Poland on Saturday from London, the first thing I noticed was - the rudeness and contempt for others. Sure - Poland is "so far ahead of the west." You know what you can do with your smiley.

News / Poland Parliamentary Elections 2019 [93]

What all of this shows is that Poles can be bought. They care nothing for their country, for it's economic well-being going forward, or for the environment.

Well done everybody!

Election turn-out?

Any stories from the election booths today? There was a 300 metre long queue and a FOUR hour long wait to vote in Barcelona today, information courtesy of my daughter.

It's a pity that Poland doesn't as a rule have politicians worthy of the name, who can properly serve such interest from its' diaspora.

News / How could PiS better spend billions instead of 500+ ? [275]

No Anthead - child benefit UK is paid for 2 children only.
If the 500 was paid in vouchers I would have little argument, but it is often used as an investment for the childs' future.
Ridiculous.

the 21st largest economy , (ahead of sweden and belgium), the sixth highest growth rate in the world

You have typical socialist arguments. Poland has a "big" economy, but a far lower GDP than Sweden or Belgium. That is the measure of the living standard of a country. But you already knew that.

Growth rate? From a low level of economy - so that's not a real economic benchmark, is it?
Country budget? PIS isn't investing in infrastructure (apart from the ridiculous Elblag channel, that is) so if they are determined to not progress then they can massage the figures so that they appear to be economical with the taxpayers' money.

Child support in other countries is for the first two children only and was 30 pounds a month in the UK last time I checked.. Nobody told PIS that the world is undergoing a population explosion. If people choose to have 4/5 children, that is their choice. I resent having to subsidise them.

posters support the exact same policy in great britain as essential but for poland

You have the good fortune of living in Australia, and come out with the usual nonsense about comparing two completely different countries on the developed scale. Poland is developing, whilst the UK is the 5th largest economy and can afford social welfare to a greater degree. Polish politicians, on the other hand are simply populists who are only in power because they redistribute to those living in rural areas at the expense of those who graft in the cities ie. those who actually get up in the mornings to do a day's work.

And if there was a little less outsourcing, sub-contracting and so, more people would be able to feed their own families through their own graft, instead of the exploitation that Poles love to serve on their fellow countrymen. Then the rest of us wouldn't have to subsidise such workers to the degree that we do. And, if receipt of all these social handouts, these people decline a job offer, they should be sanctioned and lose the benefits. As it is, too many are now too comfortable and have become lazy and don't take up employment opportunities. Ask anybody who actually lives HERE.

In the meantime, do tell us as how you would help the aborigines, and others in Australia, who are disenfranchised. You know nothing about what goes on here, save the propaganda you read in Gazeta Polska.

You are up in arms and that you look around for anything

Yes, I hate PIS:

1. They encourage laziness through their ruinious socialist policies, with my tax money.
2. They promote an outmoded religion and foist it on society
3. They follow a nationalist agenda that I object to, having been brought up that people are actually different
4. They break the law with impunity
5. They disrespect the environment
7. They cling to the shirt tails of America and obstruct the EU where they can, but are happy to take the funding
8. They fail to carry through with badly needed infrastructure projects -as I, Pawian and Maf have shown.

That will do off the back of my head.

How about evidence ?

When did you last visit the north of Poland? It is littered with projects that have been left standing for 3 years or more.
To be fair, the biggest project is a real balls breaker, the A1 from Czestochowa to Piotrow, But what I don't like about you Ironside, is your false concern.

You really are the worst example of the Lesser Plastic Pole, a most problematic and unwanted species.

Travel / Royal palace from before Poland's partitions in the Tri-city area near the sea [7]

Sorry Ziemowit, we know..I live there ( well, obviously, not there..)
The fact remains that the latest exterior renovation is cheap and shoddy, because the proper funding is not in place. I will photograph the place to illustrate my point. Oh, and dogs are not allowed in the gardens, but drunken bums abound. It's a work in progress, but when government employees renovate their own property they do so properly.

This piecemeal renovation is a scandal.

Oliwa. It looks to have been renovated

Yes - it's a shame that Poland doesn't yet have a "National Trust" where historical buildings are saved for the nation through public membership. Maybe there are just too many such monuments, but this palace has gone through an extensive, yet shoddily done, renovation recently.

It's an important start!

From the top of my head,

I don't need to search for it, as you put it Ironside. Some of us are affected one way or another every day of the week. The S7 Warsaw -Gdansk road, an extremely expensive project as you would know, if you lived in Poland, due to the wetland environment, was a work in progress from before PIS came on the scene, and the S6 from Gdansk to Slupsk and all points west was tendered for 2 years ago. PIS did all they could to obstruct it, and put it off until 2022, but were handed a fait d'accompli and construction was finally signed off on 3 weeks ago

he many hundreds of kilometers of roads they've built

Actually most of the highway projects in central and northern Poland have been put on hold, due to budget restraints while PIS continue with their social handouts. One might not know much about these things, but I do know from history that the state giving out billions to it's citizens for zero productivity leads to only one thing.

It's called austerity. And it damages livelihoods and kills people. But by then PIS will argue that their socially caring catholic state was complete - and it is the evil capitalist money markets that are hell bent on destroying their "utopia."

News / Poland one step closer to visa waiver by US Senate [59]

visa waiver, meaning Poles will now be able to travel to the US for business or tourists for up to 90 days without a visa

Long overdue. Not signed off and delivered yet, but has to be good - what do the Americans want in return?

Real Estate / SUROWY DOM IN POLAND - UNFINISHED HOMES FOR SALE - COST TO COMPLETE THE BUILD? [16]

a ballpark estimate to fit out a shell property

Pawian has answered your question, as I would. Fitting out, as you put it, is all in the eye of the beholder. I have been in communist block flats which were fitted out with the latest hi-tec, and gold taps, all in the worst possible taste, and others which were homely and finished for 20 percent of that price.

It all depends what you want. If you mean, what is the cheapest fitting for drylining and flooring...then we can talk.

Kaczyński.

You are joking, right? Him, who had the rest of the Solidarity shipyard delegation photoshopped into blurred onlookers? Including the person who actually had the charisma.

Do tell us you're on a wind-up.

Work / I'm interested in teaching in Poland and I need some help. [33]

British and Irish teachers developed a reputation for alcohol abuse and skirt-chasing,

Is that opinion or backed up by evidence?
I worked with young women at university for ten years in my 30s and never once made an inappropriate approach to any. Also I generally never drink during the school year.

Your comment is a slur on all Brit/Irish teachers. I demand satisfaction sir. Name your weapons :):)

@pawian
You sound like a real barrel of laughs. I'm glad I wasn't in your class at school. Enjoy your "Polishness".
In the meantime, the world has moved on. Don't you teach your students that there is a big wide world out there?

Wot is the matter with you Pawian? I have experienced plenty about Polish culture thank you very much. Everything has to be a put down with you, hasn't it? Enjoy the weather at your country house, and chill out.

I asked why Poles don't pickle onions. Maf answered my question ; there is really no need for you to chip in with your "I love everything Polish and we wouldn't sink to that..." bit every single time I post an opinion.

It's so tiresome.

Pickled onions are available.

No. Those are not onions - they are shallots.

Maybe they have and didn't care for them.... I've seen pickles as ingredients in mix vegetable pickles,

Logical explanation as to the pickled onions! Their bad. And Polish mixed vegetable pickles suck. From a bygone age, when fresh produce out of season was unobtainable unless you were wealthy.

pickle sausage like the Czechs do

Yes, I remember that. Very novel. Czech and Slowak cuisine again is desperately short on vegetables. Strange.
