Life / Polish movies with English subtitles [87]

I havent actually seen the other 2 yet, over here Polish films can be stoopidly expensive..Europa Europa cost me £25 on DVD (about $900 ;) )
But Wajdas Trilogy pops up now and again on one of our Digital Free channels,Film4. Decalouge was shown in full on the BBC a year or so ago too( the hanging scene reaffirmed my abomination of the death penalty, gruesome.)

I was also surprised to find on my last trip to Poland that Kanal wasnt available on DVD so for a couple of years I had to make do with picking out some of the dialouge on a non subtitled video cassete and make the rest of the story up from my knowladge of the uprising :)

Life / Polish movies with English subtitles [87]

Hi ranjit,a good one, though not in the stricktest sense a Polish movie(despite most of it being in Warsaw and the cast and crew being 99.9% Polish) is Three colours White, available in HMV etc with subtitles(and the added bonus of Julie Delphy ;) )

Language / Your perception of the Polish accent [145]

More often than not, their teaching abilities were a dammed sight better than the average CELTA grad too

Agreed mate.
Re accents though, Dont worry about it,thats what makes the world interesting,as long as your words are understandable who cares.
One thing I find as a native english speaker is that generaly when it comes to accents,or,pining down someones countyry of origin rather, with blokes I can tell the difference between a Pole and a Russian speaking English but with women its much more subtle.

Language / Your perception of the Polish accent [145]

I prefer the Russian accent but the Polish accent is nice enough, provided the woman doesn't whine (super high pitch), that irritates me

OMG,not just me then, its that whiny non noise made between real words, sometimes you would swear it could shatter a wine glass :)

but people used to think it was actually fun for the family. Of course, the government has told us otherwise.

lol,Used to work for English Heritage at one of its "flagship" country house places. The head Gardner and I got on really well(would have loved his job but hayfever kinda rules it out lol) he pointed out where the familiy weed plot had been all through the Victorian and Edwardian era....apparently,the ladies of posh houses had such dull lives that they tended to get stoned on a regular basis.....maybe explains the corsets....needed something to stay upright :)

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

after WWII it was very dangerous thing to be Pole in England and they were holded in worst conditions than Germans ...

your talking out of your arse sadek, that is complete BS and probably what your communist teacher told you....holded(sic) in worse conditions, yeah right ,as GPs and teachers and an admiral in the royal navy....

You wouldn't get the point if someone stapled it to your forehead.

Life / Poles are not racist [873]

I doubt it if you could prove that your mega-overblown statement about Poles being the worst racists in the world is true.

I think what he is saying is,it is worse to be a rascist if you have never been in contact with other races.....almost as though if you do live alongside other races you have some form of excuse for rascism.....er,not sure which is "worse" to be honest.....

just because people stare doesn't make them prejudice, its just makes them curious.

One of our students on a trip to Krakow was a very pretty British Asian girl, muslim in head scarfe, she got stared at all the time in Poland then Czech republic. It took her a few days to realise it wasnt hate or rascism ,just curiosity.Where she lives she is one of hundreds if not thousands and here in yorkshire you dont tend to blink seeing "unusual" national costumes, even the Coptic preist doesnt get stared at and he looks like a baddie from a horror movie or star wars :)

Friggin Troll Muppet, the word "Paki" in Urdhu, the native/predominant language in Pakistan means "peace" this guy is obviously some narrow minded wind up merchant,The term "Paki" when used to describe a person is a form of racial abuse ....what a waste of space you are mr jabwaw.....

History / 'Battle of Britain' won thanks to Polish aces !! [158]

That's a great teaching technique for the inexperienced. Not for the few in RAF who actually had experience, not only flying but actually fighting against German pilots.

Im afraid "your" aircrew needed it as much as anyone, you cant just join a forgiegn force without cross over training or chaos would ensue as has been demonstrated in recent "blue on blue " incidents in hot and dusty places. Speaking personally my relative had as much fighting experiance as the average Polish Pilot by then as he had been in France with his Hurricane Sqdn prior to Dunkirk and the B of B. The Air war for Europe was won by terrific co operation between men of many nationalities coming together with a coomen cause and a commen training regime and tactics, without that we would have all lost against the hun.

History / 'Battle of Britain' won thanks to Polish aces !! [158]

Well said, but this turn around came after the turning points of the Battle. All points are moot really though, much as I obviously ,being a descendant of one, have the utmost respect for all the aircrew of every nationality involved(bar the hun,d'oh) it has to be said that the Battle was "lost" by Hitler pulling the main forces back in preperation for Barbarossa.

and wasnt frantisek a Czech flying with 303?

History / 'Battle of Britain' won thanks to Polish aces !! [158]

Although undoubted great Pilots and cracking nazi hunters the Polish contribution to the Battle of Britain is being played up a smidge. They were the most undisaplined aircrew around at that time,in a complex air battle that was won by putting the right amount of aeroplanes in the right place at the right time Polish aircrew would fly off on what would now be termed "wild weasel" flights,ie tearing out of formation after stragglers and lone bombers. None of this takes away from the bravery or valor but battles are won through disapline and team work, not individual acts of heroism.

All aircrew were initial trained on bycycles for formation flying,in fact the Modern RAF still uses this practice,in the Red Arrows, and no one complains about their lack of skill.

BTW,my 2 great uncles were pre war trained RAF Pilots, ,the one who fought in the B of B finished it with 8 confirmed solo "kills" and went on to another 12,so to sweeping ly imply that the Poles were the only trained Pilots is utterly ludecrus.

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [656]

Of course not to single out the states (and P' I hope you realise I sayed in most cases, obviously many cases are health related.) its just that whether we like it or not what happens in the states tends to travel the world. Im with you,and another example of the american pharmacological industries greed is the labeling then drugging of kids for being what kids should be,high spirited and lacking attention when boring adults drone on. Another example, the perfectly natural,(and in my mind beautifull symbol of motherhood) strech marks women get post pregnancy are now being touted on some american made tv advert as "ugly and disfiguring" but guess what Glaxostiensmithjohnson have the answer,a medicly formulated cream.

The abundance of refined foods is taking the toll on people, mostly in industrialized countries so far...

yes but people do have a choice to put the crap in their mouths,it is still far cheaper to eat healthily than eat procesed fast food style junk.

PS ,back to the topic, A typical Polish look? Bizzarly no one who meets me in Poland belives I dont have some connection to Poland in my genes, all think I am descended from the '45 generation,I always then point out that actually Im totaly Celtic with only the vaguest distant family conections to Poland, not a blood line, and not the sort of "Poles" I suppose your talking about,oi vay ;)

Genealogy / The typical Polish look, or all Eastern Europeans [656]

Dont you see Witek,in the States everything, and I mean everything has to be turned into a "disease",they are now trying to say obesity is a disease,no it isnt,in 90% of cases it is shear gluttony and greed. By turning this into a "disease" money can be made by the health care industry and citizens can give up responsibility of self restraint and sit back and catch the "too many burgers and twinkies disease"......

Love / Looking for a Polish love song [78]

am trying to translate an old Polish song for my mother

Dzis do ciebie przysc nie moge, 1942 with unknown writers from the the lwow area underground movement.
I love this old song so full of heart that even not understanding all the words its haunting. Afraid Im still looking for a good translation of this myself but from the lyrics I have I would suggest that "..Ze do innej spieszno mi .." is instead(also maybe) "Ze do innej teskno mi "

Life / Gypsies or Roma: European and Polish attitudes towards [87]

magdalena, I heartily agree with all the points you've made above.just trying for a little balance against the witch hunt. Ive never heard myself of persecution per se of Roma in modern day Poland either,in fact,to my shame I own a "hit"record by some lass called kayah singing with a Gypsy "prince" kid I think he sort of raps in Polish and she warbles in Rom.

Made up stories of hardship in an attempt to stay in the UK are Im sure not confined only to gypsies though, many africans ariving claim to be from warzones etc when theyre actually just economic tourists.

No,the persecution of the roma to such a disgusting standard as to have needed a UN commision set up is actually more in Romania and Slovakia where opprtunities are closed due to nothing more than rascisim pure and simple.

The main "problem" in the UK is not with genuine roma/gypsies,our problems are with the so called "irish travellers" or more commenly known as " Pikeys". No one seems to know who these people are supposed to be,they are all as white (or ginger lol) as your avarage irish person but have somehow, without putting anything into this country managed to obtain some sort of protected status as a "racial minority" which is utter tosh as they are white europeans who at some time were bandits or tinkers back in the emereld isle, kicked out of ireland for being a pain in the ass then ended up over here dripping with cheap gold chains and beating up young girls left right and center.

you've obviously never visited Balnain House in Inverness

No,tell me more, thats ma families neck of the woods :)

Life / Gypsies or Roma: European and Polish attitudes towards [87]

The international attitude to Roma sucks big time. Some of the comments here and elsewhere sound like jokes or the very least what mad old bats used to say a hundred years ago.All thats missing is " gypsies kidnap gadjos babies" or other such BS. Im not saying there arnt Roma crime gangs etc but when your from a comunity that has been persecuted for centuries how much respect are you going to have for the outside world? Proportionatly the Roma of Europe lost more people murdered in the holocaust than the jewish people but where as one "race" now has its own country and numerous specific laws protecting it from harm the other Race, the Roma/Sinti?Gypsies have nothing and seem to bring out the worst in many peoples nature. In this day and age,the conditions that Europes Roma are forced to live in is shamefull.Look at more moderate societies or area's where roma are a bit more accepted/intergrated and you see a totaly different side to this fascinating culture that predates the creation of Poland as a state.
