News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2971]

General statement: Again, contraception before abortion!

This i whole heartedly agree with!
No i've never been faced with this choice, two freinds have..they made their choice (husband and wife) based on knowledge of the sever handicaps the child was going to have, both of which included incomplete brain developement...if it had just been physical developement i think both would have chosen to keep the child...

but think of the finacial strain of a severly developmental challenged child, and the fact that most insurrance companies here in the US would drop the child at birth because of a pre-existing condition!

Also adoption is not what folks claim it to be ...there are millions of adoptable children in the world, which means allot of folks won't do this act of kindness.

Our family , while in Poland had several children that were raised within our family group because they were orphaned...
so i think maybe Poland has a good cultural tendency not to abandon it's children...but it is not a common cultural trait.
When you relegate abortion you should also relegate the future of the child?
Children of rape if exposed to the purpetrator are generally exposed to that crime themselves...where is the morality in that?
Don't believe me, volunteer to be a rape crisis counselor, some very ugly truths will present themselves to you.
If you don't want a child is it better to bring them into a world where no one else wants them either?
how many of us have adopted one of these forlorn children? When we 'walk the talk' maybe there can be positive change.
I did not know i was pregnant till the second trimester both times..Doc's said i was extrememly healthy and that i was how it was supposed to be...

By the time i saw an ultrasound there were legs, arms and facial distinctions.
Would i have chosen to abort if something was wrong? it depends..i know the people who have lost children this way have to live with their decission for the rest of their lives, and i still visit the graves of the two children my freinds lost...

Life doesn't begin at conception, it takes a few days for that combination to create 'life'
Still i will never take the choice away from anyone, if you so don't want that child that you are willing to abort....what life would that child have if you wanted it that little?

Worrying about a baby? How ironic. When men will be able to deliver babies, then they will decide what women should do with their asses.

agreed! When men can give birth they can tell us what to do, some of us would not choose this action, but who am i to tell someone their choice? I did not wake up as God this morning and neither did any of these men.

News / 1.3% birth rate = Poland's slow death [221]

And so the government has doubled its tax animal slave force, the family has been destroyed and we're a step closer to a new worldwide communist utopia with only the obligatory rivers of blood part left for us to wade through.

Wow !!! She make That much more than you? Messed your ego up big time ?
Sorry, just don't see it this way and it's NOT because i watch Commercials, TV is Not where i get my opinions from!

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

so why are you making sweeping statements about the education system here then?

;) it's an island to me ;) shorelines are too close-
i like the thousands of miles between the Atlantic and Pacific
;) makes me a 'landlubber'
Not into large bodies of water....couldn't have made it in the Navy like pawian!!! :0
a good sweeping statement always gets some accurrate responses...when you want the truth it ALWAYS works ! ;)
So basically if you are part of the Modern world, connected to internet just about every place that educates it's children requires a second language , at least one to be taught in school.

strzyga
great stats posted on Poland that report was nice. Thanks for sharing.

I will be the third person to point out that you are wrong.

Great ;) and thanks to all = wasn't aware ...interesting that so many folks are exposed to various languages and English still factors as most common usage.

Have students from all over the world...every one of them has had exposure to English...mostly the British style; so in America it can get rather confusing for them.

Yes i am very gentle with them, helpful and understanding...the experience of sitting in a classroom where your listening to another language even if you 'know' it can be daunting!

;) sorry folks my experience with England is airport layovers/refueling only...i'm not real comfortable on islands ;)

News / Amber Gold and other Poland's suspicious institutions [139]

So far, it is the local Tax Office which has to return 11 million PLN which had been paid by the fraudster as tax from profits which never existed.

Awful!!, the tax office means it was paid in advance and now is being refunded?
or everyone who is paying taxes is losing here? LOL That would be very American :)

Magdalena: I personally think the choice of "must" was largely influenced by the preceding "necessary".

agreed, often a test is skewed by it's choice of terms and the perceptions of the reader..or their personal prior knowledge.
US makes a second language a MUST in secondary schools, most are opting for Spanish or French. Latin is still a strong choice in Catholic schools and Chinese is growing in popularity.

Why don't the Brits expect a knowledge of a second language? Because they are an island?

History / Poland: Her heroes and her traitors [214]

was also buddies with Thomas Jefferson who became the 3rd president of the U.S.

;) Yes American history.. and Pulaski reigns high on our list of patriots also, with several towns and cities named after him. ;)

He stayed loyal to Poland.
And what's a problem with betraying traitors? I would do the same.

Agreed

Take a look calmly isn't it depending on position of view ? I'm pretty sure that the opinions about traitors and heroes would be completelly different if USSR still exists and if the position of the USA is weaker :)

Between the freedom of America and the Gulags of Russia? Theres a choice here? regardless of 'strength" i'm going with freedom

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

Ok ;) well here you get my ego ;) yes we are , great complextions - ballanced body forms-no matter where we live in the world we are sure and stable with our feminity, we are strong and independant...nothing sappy about us, no one HAS to care for us... :0 most people just adore us because we are humanistic... ;) shall i go on.. ;)

Even at 60 i get comments..we age well and take care of ourselves(in my case for the love of my grandchildren, who wants a dowdy gramma?) and you should see my daughters!!!

;) LOL!!!

'However, law forbids to annul the donation', thats a little goofy!
Madoff had several 'donations' returned primarily because they were given under false 'profits' and were included in what became available to return to the investors, most of whom just received a small percentage of what they lost.

Voluntarily perhaps..i'll dig into it..but i don't believe we have such a law, indeed i would presume the opposite in cases of fraud...

BTW, have you watched 'Nocna zmiana'

It was a little hard for me to follow because my Polish is sparse....however body language and facial expressions..general attitude would indicate that there is a high degree of 'personality' to Wałęsa, must agree there.

Yes i will do more research, again this is why i joined the forum...to learn, a teacher must always be willing to learn ;)
You'll be happy to know Polish History is not what i teach ;) it is just my personal desire to learn more about the veiwpoints of Poles within Poland.

Wałęsa

He successfully negotiated the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Polish soil and won a substantial reduction in Poland's foreign debts.
This i know, it is not to the detail of political skirmishing you are aware of; however this is the good, can you agree?

I'm in US...you should share a Tequilla picture for us ;) Though i like Rum. ;)
And right now with the presidential race it FEELS like an asylum!!!
One more question to all, anyone into Anthropology? Earliest known human remains all found in Africa In Southern Nile areas....so what 'shade' were Adam and Eve...and Lilith for that matter? Just guessing it's not 'snow white' like my brother ( blonde and green eyed) Yet me! not so - came out dark as a gypsy from the same set of light parents! And we have the DNA tests to prove we are 100% siblings!

Catholics come in all makes and models too, just like the rest of the world; some OK - some swine.

it's threads like this one, exactly, that make me too embarrassed to share this forum with normal people around me.

;) ;) !!!! You'd be surprised what normal is...a Noncaucasian i know asked if Poland was remiss on their education in certain areas, because of that low birth rate ;) and i said yeh maybe it's mostly a Catholic country.... but this guy was Catholic too and he missed the joke.

That much they haven't. No religion has yet proved itself

'We will know for sure, when we are dead ' what Busha used to say..."in the meantime behave in a manner Chirst would be proud of"

This has always worked for me.

Scientology is the one true faith! All others are hoaxes.

Thats what Islam thinks of itself....

I can't stand Tom Cruise, nope Scientology is not for me (LOL).

Nor i !!!!,no 'religion' is 100% right, especially when you consider they have all been founded on the graves of non-believers!

At the risk of being lynched by Polonius, but is there any difference with this

there ya go.!!!!..there is no diffierence -it is all superstition, medievil thinking.
Faith, true faith demeans no one, it recognizes the ligitemacy of free thought and acceptance.
Once you cross the line to censoring those who don't believe like you; figureatively or literally your belief system shows it's to be just another form of mind control.

If Poland so badly wants to be the Christ of Nations, then she must behave like Christ. And she did.

Nicely said

a spy is the exact antithesis of heroism.

not necessarily, it's a matter of perpsective...and when innocent lives (general population) are at risk.......
i find it hard to place blame for spying...especailly when it saved lives.

Plichta faces maximum 15 years.

Geez! is that all?
Well maybe that idea of the global village will be even stronger after 15 years and he will have only a hut in the Congo to hide in someday.

As opposed to Adam Michnik, whose brother's father was murdered by the communists

Finally had time to look into that and understand ;) Sorry don't like showing my foolishness ;)
Zionism has often been compared to communism...the interdependant society, problem is someone always wants to live better than the rest.
Still...interesting what your told in family...but then i've lived in the South for a long while...loud political discussions aren't as common here as amoungst my own, occassionally (like now) it makes me feel deprived.

he's ashamed of all the grace, favours and protection he received from his father.

Or perhaps angry and felt segregated from the real lives of his fellow citizens?
Or maybe a psychological response...like resentment of his Father for the childhood where he was constantly watched?
Or perhaps he had an early romantic interest that was not allowed?
Many times there are cloistered motives for our adult actions, the more virulent the reaction, the more emotionally attached to the issue, usually.
Do you think his Father would have protected him if these thoughts were expressed at home? Probably not...so maybe he grew up feeling unsafe...that even his own Father would harm him?

Just asking folks, i've learned there are often hidden reasons for actions , sometimes unclear...sometimes very clear.

darling, when was the last time you were in Poland? Poles, particularly those that are poor that can only afford crap food and those that are wealthy that eat too much food- fat fat fat..

It has been years....many years past....
yes bad food and sodas and alcohal do not help with weight....
;) i prefer to applaud the DNA along with proper eating habits (which i learned at the knees of those ancesters). ;)

History / An American studying medicine in the PRL 1978-1985: my story [142]

btw what do you mean when you said you sensed "a healing"
This interests me your choice of that word :)

JaJa for years was denied a visa to return to his homeland then after the 1980's he was allowed to return and visit his homeland...Busha did not live to experience a return.

It 'settled' him emotionally to see Poland rebuilt and becoming strong again, there was joy in his eyes when he visited the Catherdrals of his youth, a sparkle i'd never seen before....

Therefore the term 'healing'....any time we are allowed to traverse the globe as free citizens, unencumbered by the Politics of the Nations...anytime we are able to share our worlds and cultures peacefully equals a healing of old wounds of mistrust and blame.

How is it that they rarely if ever mention the estimated 160,000 Christians murdered each year world-wide for their faith?!

again true, there are many who are lost simply because of their faith...9/11 was about national identity though and more than Americans died there.
Bush may have been pro-Poland...but he still opted to send over 4thousand of our children to their deathbed. War is NOT A GAME
When we will all grow up and see that War does not solve these issues.
My apologies to the worlds youth that your elders have no regard for your future, i should think that those of us who have seen War would strive to NOT REPEAT IT!!!

I think you'll find that much of what was done was entirely legal - Communists were very big on legitimacy.

ok so ....you got that point...and yes legal can be different to different cultures/governments...none of which are above shinanegins...we all know this.

Humanity, moral responsibility to your fellow man is the law i refer to.

Cowards, opportunists and other assorted selfish bastards are never in short supply. Heroes and truly committed patriots are few and far between.

true here too,
yet those who are weaker will 'go-along' to survive and we can't fault them...life is precious, even to a peasant like me ;)
Though i'm sure that most of you have noticed i'm a rather headstrong ole gal.... ;) Just reinforces my ancestry...most Polish women i've known here are...quick to correct and rarely compliment ;)

History / An American studying medicine in the PRL 1978-1985: my story [142]

do you think I should continue chronologically or should I just serve up the stories as they come to me - from different years?

For your daughter you should continue...do a copy -paste onto a word document after you have shared the words with us then she will have a record...believe me the time will come when she will want to know.

My Father had WWII stories and it was hard for him to share, what we learned from him is freedom is precious, he allowed no prejudice in his home, i would find him staring into space...sad....he would say only 'it was all wrong, child, it was just wrong'

My brother and i tried so often, but the Paris he saw was in ruins, the people broken....he wasn't a man to cry...but it was always there when he spoke of Europe (Poland is in Europe to our family)

Your stories reflect a healing, that you were even allowed to do what you did...go to school... attests to that.
Embrace the memories and tell us who want to hear.....children grow older, she will want to know someday.....tell your stories as you recall them, order can be acheived later.

My wonderful man of a Father has left us, my heart still aches, he took his stories and tears with him....i so wish he had shared, it may have lifted his burden.

Not true. International Law makes it quite clear that following orders is no defense if those orders are illegal. Breaking an oath to a proxy of an occupying power can be justified.

Very true, even within ranks of a wholey sanctioned military you have the right to disobey an immoral order, indeed if you do not in the American military you will face courtmartial....we have seen this happen to some in the recent past........

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4501]

boletus Thankyou also boletus ;) maybe not the best meanings et all, but i have been a fool in my time, as most of us can be ;) and it might also explain why JaJa disliked the spelling ;)

i might add i have always felt the warrior in my blood and as a Vet in America i have traveled and lived in a variety of places ....though i can't call myself a thief, for lack of reason to....the rest of it is a fairly good meaning for a peasant.

Hope you'll not be offended if i explain to my brother we might rather have been peasants with purpose, he has more ego than i do... ;)

Polonius3
Thankyou Polonius, i also have found only one woman with the name, in Florida. :) gracious of you to respond to me at all.
