Love / Amount of money for gift (I have a girlfriend in Poland) [56]

Sidliste_Chodov

How do you know that girl asked for any gifts?
It could be that she is using him but on the other hand he nowhere said that those gifts were expected by his "girlfriend". Maybe he was sending them spontanously?

We can't know for sure, but he obviously has his own doubts already:

Are all Polaks as greedy and rude as these people? and now I notice that in all her emails, she seems to talk about that, and money, a lot.

Life / Please recommend - shopping in Warsaw [30]

the cheapest place I have found for groceries is Auchan in Piaseczno, you risk your life when you go in there though.

It's probably full of Mafia members lol.

Ugh! Mind you, many supermarkets round here feel like you're in Lagos, so I'm sure i could cope with it. Piaseczno's a bit far out for me though :)

It was a vacant lot with a small pavillion shop on part of it. My neighbors kicked up a stink about losing light but they built anyway

upmarket shops aren't really my scene, but thanks. It will be interesting to see how much Warsaw has changed since I was last there :)

If he was asking about a real girlfriend, the replies would have been very different. But it's obvious that he hasn't seen her for a long time, he barely knows her, yet thinks she's a "girlfriend".

If he's dumb enough to send several "gifts" a year to someone like that, then he can't really expect better responses.

Reading stuff like this, it's no wonder that so many people still fall for Nigerian scams:

Are all Polaks as greedy and rude as these people? Because this friend wants to come to America, and I am starting to think that, if she is like the ones who answered my question, I don't want her here. In fact she works at a bank and wants to be a financial consultant, and now I notice that in all her emails, she seems to talk about that, and money, a lot.

Has something been demolished to make way for it? I've not been in Warsaw for a couple of years, so I'm curious ;)

But I'll be back in a few weeks time :)

So I have a question: does anyone know how much a box of Ptassie Mleczko costs in Carrefour these days? The most up-to-date prices I could find are here:

okazjum.pl/blog/supermarkety/slodkie-podarunki,57.html

Are those prices really up-to-date? If so, it probably saves around £1.00 a box on UK prices, so it's worth my while taking a larger suitcase :)

The price of a box of Ptasie Mleczko is the way I decide on suitcase sizes for journeys to PL (silly I know, but I can easily eat ten boxes of chocolates, but I can't eat ten packs of kiełbasy lol!).

she's probably a greedy, rude *****. **** Poland and **** Polaks.

Typical cowardly "guest" response. Says more about your real agenda than anything else.

I met her ten years ago, yes, but we never corresponded afterward. She found me on Facebook in March this year, after all that time. I was quite surprised, because I really did kind of fall in love with her when I was there, and tried to find her for a long time once I got back. Never forgot about her. But no, we don't really know each other well yet.

In that case, I think you should send here $1000. You need to make sure that you don't look cheap compared to all her other "boyfriends".

Why this forum attracts all these fools is beyond me.

I think you should start by looking at what the project would offer Poland.

You forgot "things were so much better under communism" ;)

Life / Polish mentality towards Pakistan [108]

Do you speak Polish?

As he doesn't even appear to know the answer to the question "Znasz j. polski?", I think we can make up our own minds about that ;)

I bet he's having "pierogies" and "kiełbasas" for dinner :D

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1303]

Even the dickwad Von Rompuy isn't that harsh! I sometimes go for a doner after work (sober) and I enjoy it :) :)

Now, obscure Polish foods???

Even I'm not that cruel ;)

Siemieniotka, then. English opinion on this one! the weed smokers may like this one, hehe.

Hauskyjza - is eating this on the Singapore MRT a whippable offence? Or worse? Especially as "SMRT" means "death" in Czech. haha :)

Sid, not so ancient and, well, not rock ;)

Well... they were playing before I was born, and I'm not exactly a spring chicken ;) Not rock - Cavalera Conspiracy is rock :D

You are Polish, right Sid? It's hard to go far wrong with Polish food. Meatballs are manageable for most. Dumplings too. Only tripe stands out. I haven't encountered problems with much else. Tripe was fine for me. Not 'gads'.

Yeah.

I like Polish food, but I won't touch tripe. Gross!

I can't understand why anyone British would dislike Polish sausages, though. Well, apart from King Athelstan - but he didn't realise that they were German and not Polish in Aldi lol :)

plese dont! have a veggie sister. always a nightmare cooking for her...

I won't ;) Tried it once, substituted the meat for cheese and cakes, and piled on the pounds! lol. Never again :)

Quorn

That always reminds me of an ancient rock band who only know three chords :D

I dont think she is, she is open to ideas

Anyone who is mad enough to want to learn our crazy language must have something going for them :D

Genealogy / Slavs are descendants of Sarmatians? [600]

The Slavs are the largest mass of European peoples sharing common ethnic and linguistic roots encompassing Half of Europe in their realm and it's still Tara incognita in your tiny understanding of the world's history

What would the Boer know, anyway. We Slavs may be a lot of things, but we didn't invent Apartheid, and we never did any hand-chopping like his Low Country descendants did.

I once took my wife (now ex) to one of these places once - she threw up as soon as we left!

We Poles grew up on overcooked food - so if it's not well done, it's not done ;) lol

Mind you... I love sushi/sashimi, and I always get annoyed when they only have "cooked fish" sushi left. I probably have some east Asian genes. Explains my kung-fu obsession too. haha :)

Love / Do polish men like career women? [60]

I must say that polish men love smart women .

I don't believe that dresiarstwo or wiocha are interested in smart women; they probably can't even spell "wykształcona" :p

I've noticed a few people on this site talk about Slavs being the descendants of the Sarmatians.

Don't encourage him, ffs :p

I loved eating a bento (boxed lunch) in the hikari or nozomi shinkansen. Namagusai dakedo....(strong fish smell but....)

Just remember... no durians :)

Poles don't need to travel far or fast.

Why would anyone choose a five-hour journey over a two-hour one?

The last time I got a train in Poland, it took over five hours to get to Gdansk - and that was an "inter-city" train (iirc), which implies "faster". Well, it would over here, but not in Poland. A similar journey in the UK would take half that time, yet everyone still complains about the rail service over here. It took well over an hour just to cross the Warsaw boundary, yet it barely takes half an hour to get out of London, which is much bigger!

it's fast, straight track that we need.

what's the point of making it look pretty now, only to invest more later.

Chodov in "Agrees With Moderator" shocker :D

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

Lodz = Birmingham

Manchester = Krakow

Kind of. Manchester's way more important than Birmingham (despite what Brummies think), and £ódź was (for industrial reasons) even known as "the Polish Manchester" ;)

Wroclaw = Sheffield

I've always thought of Katowice as being the Polish Sheffield.

Gydnia = Bournemouth

Full of pensioners? lol

I wonder where will become the "Polish Bradford" though. :0 lmao.

I'm actually suprised that you want to visit place like Białystok

Just to say I've been, really

but not Budgoszcz.

My ex is from there; and if she and her friends are anything to go by, it must be a dreadful place.

;)

It's much better than it looks - put it that way.

My mum went to Uni there, so I kind of feel that I have to go there at some point. And I've got an interest in industrial history, so that's another reason ;)

Warsaw: because I know it better than anywhere else in Poland, and I prefer big cities, having lived in one for most of my life. There's far more to the place than meets the eye, if you can look beyond the ugly concrete, but few bother to find out.

Wrocław: the friendliest, most easy-going city I've visited in Poland. I've only been three times, but even the flooding didn't spoil things too much. Would love to go back.

Places I really want to visit: Poznań, £odź and Białystok. Just to say I've been, really. And Katowice - mainly because I like Silesians.

Places I have no intention of visiting: Bydgoszcz. My ex is from there; and if she and her friends are anything to go by, it must be a dreadful place. Mind you, she wouldn't tell me what ends she was from, so I strongly suspect that "Bydgoszcz" actually meant "backward Kujawsko-Pomorskie village", so I may be wrong ;) Either way, I doubt that it can even come close to somewhere like Wrocław or Gdańsk.

Note that I haven't mentioned Kraków :D
