Life / What is Poland B as opposed to Poland A and the otherway-round. [45]

However, Poland B with an education still is Poland B because of the way they think

Bit of an over generalization, don't you think? My nearest city is Białystok, where there have been massive changes in the last ten years. As for mentality, well, I suggest that you come for yourself and enjoy the internationally-renowned theatres, the new opera house and the fine art galleries. The medical university has earned an enviable reputation over many years. The village where I live is a vibrant place with a brand new village hall. I really don't think these labels are helpful or accurate.

other places have an inferiority complex

Ok, no doubt you're right. I just live here! The uni students I teach have no inferiority complex. Nor, as far as I know, do the locals. Quite the contrary in fact. Perhaps it is different in other regions but here in Podlasie most people seem proud of their region, and quite rightly so. It's a great place and is developing fast.

Law / Possible to convert to Turkish driver's license to Polish driver's license? [17]

I spent three wonderful years in Turkey and had great friends'there. It seems that things have changed indeed. When I was there young people had respect. I hope you benefit from your time in Poland but I advise you to change, or hide, your attitude. And please don't talk about Hitler destroying Poland in that way. It won't earn you any friends here.

News / Military power (Poland #21 in the world) [97]

the firing range in his High Schools basement, mentioned Kalashnikovs...........still a popular after school activity in PL?

My wife (mid-30's) and her classmates had to fire two rounds from an AK when she was at school, where there was a firing range. It was something every schoolkid had to do in those days. I hear kids in the US bring their own nowadays.

She did not.Not from kbk ak,now if you say kbks then I believe you.

I'm pleased to say that she's not a weapons expert, so you're probably right. Anyway, it was something both girls and boys were expected to do.

I thought this was what you hear people doing in the flat above about midday on Sundays.

It was an attempt (obviously failed) to refer to the tenderizing of schabowy, but never mind.

Life / Moving to Warszawa for 2 months for work: bank account, local culture, photography, people [10]

Wait for (especially older) women to extend their hand to shake; don't initiate. Don't be surprised if somebody is reluctant to shake your hand over a threshold. Bad luck. I know somebody is bound to shoot me down, saying the younger generation are different, but if you are in a formal situation, every little helps, especially with older/professionally senior people.

you wear socks with sandals

I don't wear socks with sandals but I've never understood some people's objection to it. Is it on aesthetic grounds or just a sartorial faux pas?

UK, Ireland / POLISH PARTY NORTH LONDON UK [28]

Ever worn shirt sleeves just baggy enough to slip a pint glass up? If not, your still an amature ;)

As well as smuggled booze we used to hollow out cigarettes and replace the tobacco with alternative smoking materials. Used to drive the guv'nor crazy trying to find the culprits. Long time ago; respectable and boring now.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Palikot who is a little crazy and anti-clerical.

That's why I like him. Seriously, though, I'm a bit worried that he will pick up a lot of the youth vote to the detriment of PO (I'm not a PO fan, but anything to keep JK out).

Work / Irish native speaker moving to Poland - job ideas (private lessons?) [9]

Get your money back if you can - there are plenty of other CELTA courses available in Europe

Like Poland, for example. If you're going to join your girlfriend here anyway, you could do worse than taking CELTA in PL. Probably cheaper than in Ireland anyway. Delphi is right. These on-line courses aren't worth a fart in a stiff wind. You need a month-long intensive course. Get a refund if you've already paid.

News / POLAND HAS LOST 1 MILLION PEOPLE (for other EU countries) [30]

i'd go for 10 or more.. money or no money.. there are ALWAYS ways to support your kids in a developed country, So so so so soo many ways. :)

That's called parasitizing on other taxpayers. If you can't afford 'em, don't have 'em.

Food / What's your favorite Polish coffee? [73]

Pip quoted. LavaAzza is good

It certainly is but the price is insane. Kristine doesn't need to bring any equipment when she comes here; it's not that bad! Kronung is as good at it gets for a reasonable price.

Food / Are there any real kebab shops in Gdansk? [20]

LwowskaKrakow. there is no lamb available in Poland at a butcher's or supermarket that i know of.

Lamb is available but it's not easy to find. Try hypermarket deep freeze sections, where you might find a few scrag-ends from New Zealand at ridiculous prices. Another option is to ask around. Some butchers sometimes have a little mutton. I've just finished my Sunday breakfast of curried mutton, as it happens. I bought the meat a couple of weeks ago for 15PLN/kg.

Work / English teaching job offer in a medium Polish town. Is the salary sufficient? [30]

wielki pan

[quote=Ricco] I've also been offered an apartment shared with another Teacher, free of charge. The school also pays the utility bills in full. [/quote

2000 isn't much, to be sure. Ricco, you should ask for 2500 net or no show. If the school refuses, you really haven't lost anything. Have you tried Language Link? They tend to look after teachers. I worked for them years ago and, although the pay wasn't great, they were honourable.

If you do come to Poland, you can always pick up private work (don't tell the school). This can earn you beer money. Keep dropping in, you can get a lot of good, free advice here.

Food / Is Polish food still more natural than in the West? [142]

Also no large meat factories, at least not to the same scale as in the US.

I recently watched a film about the US meat giant Smithfield. Scary stuff. They are in Poland. You can see it on Documentary Heaven.
