News / 70% of Poles like Komorowski. Do you? [120]

He was a national embarrassment. Perhaps not in the U.S. but in Europe diplomats simply couldn't do business with him. In Poland educated Poles spent quite a lot of time with their hand over their faces.

Life / West-East life in Poland? [35]

I rather like it that way! :)

Do you live here or are you visiting? The reason I ask is that nobody I know does not want better infrastructure.

Just as I thought.

most of them - even the young ones - never learned English. THANK GOD!

Why on earth are you pleased that your relatives do not have a modern education?

Language / De-diacriticalisation of Polish? [9]

"Re-created" is the key word here

Recreated is indeed the key word! Yes, he replaced Arabic script with Roman letters, some with diacritics.

And it would be mind-shatteringly costly in terms of money, education, and national identity to create a completely new system from scratch.

I basically agree, but don't forget Ataturk, who did precisely this, and he recreated a nation.

towns and villages have hardly been touched by modernization since at least WWII.

That might be true for a lot of the villages but which towns are you thinking of? I live not too far from you (according to your profile).

News / 70% of Poles like Komorowski. Do you? [120]

Who, me? Yes, for food I have no problem with hunting, especially to control numbers. I wouldn't recommend bison, though. My favourite game is Roe deer.

Back on topic, I think the Pres. is doing what he should be doing, i.e. showing a calm and dignified face internationally, and keeping out of party political spats.

In Poland, hunting is a way of eliminating old or sick animsals and keeping the population vibrant and healthy.

Not only culling. Here are some prices for hunting in Poland. All prices PLN.
Red stag hunting, per hunter: 672
guide: 45
transport: 142
search: 156
kill: 1995
trophy (preparation and mounting): 555 up to 2kg (head)
10280 for over 8kg.

If the hunt is for culling, I don't have a problem with it. If it's for the pleasure of killing, I do.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Most are leased or bought by employers,

You no doubt know a lot more about this than I do, but are there really that many company cars in Poland? I know quite a few middle-ranking corporate types who do not have one.

If the guy really wanted to give his own kids a stable start he would pay down a big chunk of his house with that and make do with a Volkswagen or ford

Well, it's his dough, so he can do what he wants with it, although I agree that there is a lot of vanity involved these days (was it ever any different?). I recently bought a car, nothing flash but in good condition and economical. I could have bought a twelve-year-old Jaguar for the same money (which would have made me happy) but being realistic I need something that will last a while and not let me down. I have to smile when people in old Audis and Mercs overtake me in an apparrent show of superiority!

History / 75th anniversary of Stalin's 1937-38 anti-Poland genocide [32]

Christian henchmen is inapproptiate because we are not referring to followers of the Mosaic faith but people of Jewish ethnicity.

That's disingenuous. You're anti-Jew; why deny it?

saddists

What?

Was it something to do with them being better educated at the time than the average russian serf?

Sounds one possible, partial explanation.

There is a case for *outing* the background of a lot of Stalins most loyal lackeys TBH Tef' ,

I don't have a problem with that. It's just that the OP is an aggressive far-right wing Catholic who uses every opportunity to put forth anti-Jewish propoganda.

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

When I first came to live here I agreed to take part in a Newsweek survey on earnings. I was astonished to come out in the top 1%. Twelve years on I'd say I probably sit somewhere in the mid-upper half. You know what? I see that in a positive way.

Has it really? No mister, it has not.Time to face reality

I guess you would have to have lived through the changes to understand.

Poles own nothing and make nothing

You really need to get out more.

The "elites" had it all planned.

What, the Elders of Zion?

For historically permanent residents - it is, at unbelievable pace.

Poland has developed at an enormous pace in the last twenty years. It (she?) is growing in every way as a modern, energetic European country. I came to live here in 2000, and I have seen wonderful changes in every sphere of life. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in Europe. And when the RC Church is finally brought to heel, life will be even better.

Work / Teaching English in Wrocław - TEFL, fair pay? [40]

Or do one in Scotland. The cost will probably be about the same. I did mine at Basil Paterson in Edinburgh. Scary stuff for a month full on, but I got my money's worth. Mind you, that was when the mortar on the castle was still wet.

Food / Kefir drink in Poland [79]

I drank something similar in Turkey and liked it (I think it is called Ayran).

If you liked ayran, you should like kefir. Perhaps your tastebuds were shocked because you expected something else. My wife tells me that you can add things to it to make dips, and that it's also good for putting on sunburn, but she couldn't think of any other culinary uses for it.

I would like to know how you generally consume it

Open your mouth and pour it in. Don't breathe at the same time.

sour

That's the stuff. I think it's one of those things you have to have grown up with. My Polish in-laws think I'm crazy because I like Marmite.

ethanol (alcohol). Is it true?

No. Not the stuff in shops, anyway.

Do you have some brands to suggest?

If you didn't like it before, the brand isn't going to matter. Mlekovita, Danone, they're all much of a muchness.

students who will most certainly know more about the language than you do

At mid-higher levels this is almost bound to be true. Poles want to know how English grammar works, and they ask their teachers. Jono, if you can't give an immediate answer to this question, think about doing a proper course:

Why are these sentences correct?: Put down the gun/Put the gun down/Put it down
But not: Put down it.

Love / Native Polish Muslims.... how do they get into relationships? [32]

i want to clarify that Islam gives equal rights to women to choose their husbands as it does to men to choose their wife.

That's the theory; the reality is, as you are no doubt aware, very different in many countries.

Life / Observation of Polish drivers, by and English anthropologist. [94]

I hope you are joking. Today, as I was driving home, an oncoming car lost its badly-secured roof-top load, part of which hit my car. Luckily, it was just a box of polystyrene and the damage to my ride was minimal. I thank my lucky stars that it wasn't something heavier. As it happened I was keeping to the speed limit and paying attention to the behaviour of other road users. I was sober, too. Perhaps I am a fetishist in this repect, but I am alive and kinky for another day.

Travel / Winter clothes for trip to Warsaw? [13]

Dec 14 - 21

It could be quite mild then. Jan/Feb are the coldest months.

coats in the winter

The first one might not be warm enough; I'd bring the other. And no, you'll look fine.

I tend to wear hiking shoes on my feet

Where tf else would you wear them?
A plain wool hat and gloves completes the combo and you're ready to roll.

Language / Polish slang phrases - most popular. [606]

a douchebag

What exactly is a douchebag? It sounds like something a Parisian lady would keep her cosmetics in, but I have an idea I might be wrong.

Albo rybka, albo pipka. How about that one?

UK, Ireland / First proper "Polish" School in the UK - The Next Stage of Ghettoisation [283]

What was it like at your school?

Marist Fathers. All boys. Brutal. I recently found my old sports master on Friends Reunited and asked him if he remembered hitting me on the arse with a cricket bat. He said he didn't. If a man can't remember beating a twelve-year-old child with a cricket bat, he's either a liar or insane. I could go on but let's say British education has moved on in at least one respect.

Ok haters:)

er...hello. That's not a very friendly introduction.

I'm Polish.
I live and work in England.

I'm English and live and work in Poland.

I speak Spanish, Portuguese, French, Norwegian, Polish and English.

Congratulations.

I was headhunted and offered the job

Did I miss something? What job?

Those I've met hardly speak one foreign language, I don't know anyone who speaks two.

So, the greater the number of languages you speak, the better at the job you are. OK. What's the job?
