USA, Canada / Going back to the Old Country of Poland after more than 25 years! (from USA) [249]

I'm afraid I haven't expressed myself well here. For this I sincerely apologize.
1) I'm an American-born polonus, who went to school in Poland in 1978 and left in 1985 upon graduating. I returned to New Jersey with a polish wife and 3-year-old daughter. I divorced my polish wife in 1993. Since that time I never had the need to speak polish.

2) I'm only returning for a visit not to re-locate. I agree it would've have made for interesting reading had I intended to stay for good. I apologize for piquing everyone's interest.

Life / Why Polish people should be proud of being Polish? [370]

Could be amusing to attend such a festival and find out just how many of them know how to pronounce their last name properly. Anyone "proud" of being Polish should be able to pronounce their name properly!

You'd be surprised! Most of them know(babcia told them).

That's a great question. I'm not sure from whence this is coming but it all began about 2-3 years ago. I discovered that my area got 30minutes of Polsat polish news each day. I was excited! I started watching everyday. You must understand that until then I hadn't heard nor uttered a polish word in a very, very long time. This along with watching the images from Poland re-awakened my polishness and now I'm planning my return.

thank you Ziemowit for your concise synopsis. I'm both excited and anxious.

You haven't been back to visit? Do you stay in touch with family (I assume you've got family here)?

No Mod, I haven't. We have a saying here in my part of the States that "life gets in the way". I think that's what happened to me. Regretably, I haven't stayed in touch with my family for most of those years....About two years ago I've started reaching out to my cousin. He has received my overtures with tepid enthusiasm, which I can't blame him for. I'll keep trying.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

not she thinks that serving tea in a glass is a thing of the past. I find it charming :)

not only charming, aphro, but, tastier!

So lets not stereotype anyone like that ... specially align it with a disgusting creep person!

OMG! It's only flirting.

What about the robberies I've been hearing about on polish media? Is it true? I'll be returning to poland after 25 years and am worried about the crime.

I don't understand why everything has to be stamped, I get a twitch when I see a line of stamps beside a stone faced "Bullet catcher".

a carry-over from the beuracratic communist days

What is available without breaking the bank is a sort of new version of milk bar around my work. for 12 PLN once can have a full dinner: soup and the second.

Thank you for the memory of those Bar Mlecznys(milk bars).

Polish Dogs almost everyone. That dog usually makes my day.

I keep reading this over and over about the dogs! What a change from the PRL days. During the time I was in school, 1978-1985, very, very few pets. I always thought Poles were pet-haters. Why do you think this change? Is it a simple case of supply and demand?

I hate those Gyros bastards, they've killed good old Wroclaw's Knysza...

what is the KNYSZA?

Did I tell you that I spent some time in Canada and I have never encounter so much rudeness as I did over the years I spent there as I did on one train ride on Polish PKP.

This is mond-blowing to me! In my day (the dark PRL days) civility, decorum and politeness were the orders of the day! Poles had comparitively little then but they did have their PRIDE. I'm returning after a 25-yr absence. I hope I won't be too disappointed.

Life / Poland's population growth problem [44]

Poland never had a population problem. It was all a bit of scaremongering to keep the ponzi scheme going.

wow. please explain.

History / Polish martyrology during WW2 - today`s monuments [54]

Another "How we suffered" thread.

Sick of it. Time for some to grow some balls. And move on.

Dude. Poles have only recently been able to talk about these horrors (20years). Exorcising these demons will take time. Chill out and let the venting run its course

Travel / Visiting Poland - A bit worried about social attitudes and racist inclinations.. [80]

1) poland has just recently (approx 20 years) been exposed to the people of the world
2) Poles by nature are xenophobic
3) in spite of the above, the vast majority will accept all kinds of color combinations.

I, for one, am very proud of my people and I feel this discrimination moniker is unfair.

ok
let's agree that they did change their surnames. The question remains how and where do you do this in Germany? The german consulate has yet to reply to my query.

OR
they changed it in Poland. Is that possible??

Love / Different relationship... can it work with Pakistani girl and Polish guy? [129]

pakistani men being best husbands in the world

true. if you like living in the DARK AGES!

Muslim Filipina from Mindanao

Nope! RC from Negros.

I would say "how is that for backward thinking?"

You're right. That was a very arogant statement. What I meant to say, what I should have said is that the Filipinos, generally speaking, favor inter-racial marriage. They embrace them.

Byc moze. But I seriously doubt it! I've been to Germany many, many times while studying in Wroclaw in the 80's. I can attest to the fact that during my time there was a very palpable anti-polish sentiment among the older Germans. Please remember, many of them were kicked out of their homes(polish) at the end of the war.

Genealogy / Poland Virtuti Militari Information [3]

Merged: Polish war hero and the Virtuti Militari

My father was awarded the Virtuti Militari for heroic service in world war 2. He never told us what he did to deserve it. How would I find out?

What would be a reason of changing their names? What is exactly the year of their emigration??

seeing as they emigrated to Germany, I'm thinking they did it to appear less-polish...we got a call from them in 1988 or 89.

Love / Different relationship... can it work with Pakistani girl and Polish guy? [129]

when its a Polish BOY... or a EUROPEAN man...and the girl is asian... the tide turns!... the planet gets split... and everyone open their books to explain the rules.

I do not agree! I'm polish my wife is filipina. Our union was received very well by her family. In fact, I was repeatedly told that I'm helping to improve the race! How about that for forward thinking.

i don't have any of that information unfortunately. The cousins I am in contact with were not close to them either....I'm thinking I have to start looking in Germany. The question is how/where do you change your name in that country?

Law / Polish Citizenship request rejected--military service of father [18]

At present it doesn't matter whether your mother or father is Polish: provided that one of them is and they did not renounce your claim to a Polish passport

How would one know if your parents renounced your claim to a polish passport?

Genealogy / Help me find my cousins from Rybnik [25]

no question is dumb. They left a message with my mom back in 1989, that they are now living in "West Germany" and had changed their names. I, dealing with my own problems at the time, never got back to them....on a lark, I checked the german phone books using the old surname with no luck.
