Po polsku / Od Nowego Roku w radiu będzie więcej polskojęzycznych piosenek; Kompleks niższości? [39]

Life / Are Poles mentally more Eastern European or Western European? [171]

Slavia since you didn't fully answer my question about characteristics of western and eastern mentality, I assume that since Western Europeans are

quiet, shy, hard working

, then Eastern Europeans are loud, shameless and lazy?

History / "Young Poles movement" in the 18th century? [4]

in 18. century

I don't think that there was Young Poland then. But in XIX and XX c. there were quite a few "Young Polands". There was "Young Poland" in literature, music, culture etc. in the end of XIXc. and begining of XX c. There was also political organisation "Young Poland" (Młoda Polska) established by emigrants (Poles) in Switzerland in 1834. This organisation was part of Mazzini's "Young Europe". The leader of that organisation was Karol Stolzman, partisan war theoretician. "Young Poles" took part in preparation to european revolution (future Europe Spring in 1846-8).

News / Boom for food exports from Poland [17]

No problem here. I can say with some confidence :) that it is difficult to mistake żubr with cow.
Problems may occur when:
-you have realy bad eyesight
-had too much Polish food e.g. some traditional Polish drinks
-both of the above
My ideas end here.
:D

anyone shooting a Żubr intentionally is a piece of ****

and will end up in jail (up to 5 years imprisonment) and will have to pay at least half million złotych.
Don't fret, there is no happy żubr hunting in Poland

Language / WHY IS SATELITA MASCULINE? [25]

moj kot miał na imię Katarzyna.

I would add:
"Moja kotka miała na imię Katarzyna."

Some words in -ita are feminine such as okowita (a tipple), otehrs asre masculine such as banita.

There are two kinds of gender in language: natural and grammatical. Gender of some polish words can be identified immediately, others you just have to learn by heart.

In this case I would agree with Ziemowit, that satelita is considered as male, because of connotation to księżyc.

Life / Polish Film Industry-Popular Polish Movies [7]

Agnieszka Holland (The Secret Garden)... but it was almost 20 years ago. Can't think of anybody else...

In Darkness.

...and it is directed by Agnieszka Holland...

What are the most popular Polish movies in Poland right now?

"W ciemności" - In darkness and "Róża" ...and in the near future :) "Hans Kloss - Stawka większa niż śmierć" :)

There is no question about best polish movies ever, but I will answer it anyway;)
Putting aside classics like Wajda and Hoffman movies' I would pick "Trzy kolory:Niebieski", "Seksmisja", "Miś", "Boża Podszewka", "Dzień świra" and "Symetria".

Who are Poland's biggest stars currently.

I don't consider polish actors as stars, but more like craftsmen. The best ones are: Jerzy Stuhr, Andrzej Chyra, Robert Więckiewicz, Krystyna Janda, Marek Kondrat, Agnieszka Krukówna, Karolina Gruszka.

Who are the best Polish directors

Krzysztof Zanussi, Wojciech Smarzowski, Andrzej Fidyk (documentaries), Jan Jakub Kolski. Funny thing, my best polish movies were mostly not directed by my best directors :) There are movies I can watch numerous times, and there are directors, whos every movie I watch with pleasure:)

Genealogy / Is Aleska a Polish baby name ? [42]

After I saw that site I started to feel sorry for all those parents who decided to use it and for children who for the rest of their lives would have absurd names.

Genealogy / Is Aleska a Polish baby name ? [42]

There is no such old slavic name like Valeska. Glorious ruler in Polish is Władysława (she), Władysław (he). In other slavic languages name would start with: vlad, volod, włod - ruler (never vale?) and end with slav, sław -glorious (never ska?). The meaning of every old slavic name can be easily recognised (you don't need to use dictionary to tell what name means). They derive from ordinary or adjective words. Moreover if Valeska was suppose to be old Polish name, then it should start with "W" not "V". As a Polish person with very good comand of Russian, Czech and Slovak language, I can tell with confidence that Valesca don't have any meaning in those languages. Valesca - glorious ruler, doesn't exist in those languages, it's definetly not of slavonic origin.

If your goal was to give your child an uncommon name you fully succeded. You probably wont find many people with that name not only in your counry, but also in every slavic one.

Genealogy / Looking for Pontus relatives [10]

diecezjaplocka.pl/index.php?akcja=spis_wyswietlParafie&p_id=357

This is a site of parish to witch belongs Budy Mdzewskie. They have books of baptism, marriage, and deaths certificate dating back to the end of XIXc. You should start your searching from there.

Earlier books were probably taken to Warsaw, because of consolidation of archives in the beginning of XXc. Bad news is that during WWII Germans intentionaly destroied polish archives and libraries (including National Library in Warsaw in 1944).

Good luck Barbaro

Michal Pontus was born in Ostrow

Unfortunately their parish have books dating back to 1905.

Why Miłosz not Herbert got the Noble Prize ?

Life / Why Milosz not Herbert ? [38]

No doubt Zbigniew Herbert was nominated too, however there's one prize per year and the world has a lot of good poets and authors.

Fully agree.

Milosc (who was a good person) had the edge and came to the attention of the Nobel Committee.

I don't think that is completly true. Not every decision of Nobel Prize Committee is measurable and rational.

Life / Why Milosz not Herbert ? [38]

Do you agree that Herbert was a better poet ?

Their poetry is distinctive. I don't really think, that you can compare poets or any other writer, painter etc. and measure which is better. You can only say which you like better. I like both Miłosz and Herbert.

For reason stated above I can't understand how Nobel Committee chooses who's the best writer. The idea seems absurd to me.

Incidentally in the English speaking world American fiction is far superior to any thing else and has been for some time.

Then make a new thread, where all trolls could gather.

What brings us to conclusion that Valeska is misspelled, messed up name. Slavs don't need dictionaries, linguists to know what traditional slavic names derives from and what they mean. The very discusion that we are having now proves that there is something wrong with name Valeska.

Also Miłosz spent most of his live in America. Should get his prize as an American. He even wrote some of his poems in English, that telling.

Here I thought that I finally found interesting thread, where I could talk to intelligent and well-mannered people. Bummer again!

History / Do Polish people in general dislike Russia or Germany more? [369]

Exactly gumishu.

Because he coudn't figure what Poles done to Germans and Russians. However Lisowszczycy not only took part in partisan war with Russia at that time, but also defended Vienna against Turks. Looks like alexmac would now need to take fast course in polish history to find something else.

Moreover I think it is pretty difficult for anyone (and probably somebody on this forum would try to do that), to compare atrocities of XVII and XXc. The sheer scale of killing and inflicting pain was on different level in XXc. Moreover I wouldn't be so ready to compare history of distant centuries. Between XVII and XXc. happened many things, that changed peoples mindsets, mentality, whole cultures (e.g. Enlighment, education, freedom for everybody). Despite that people in XXc. commited so many crimes against each other. If we wan't to compare distant centuries why not compare todays Poland, Germany and Russia to XIII c. P., G. and R.; or why should we put such restrictions, lets compare to 100000 B.C. whatever was in place of Poland. Russia and Germany.

That being said I don't have any grieviances toward Germans and Russians unless they try to forge history, show it as being relativistic, to diminish their crimes or in the worse case to blame Poles for what happened to them during WWII (unfortunately there are some people like that).
