These "standards" you speak of are not Polish standards, but rather Nazi ones. In Poland many people including the national poet Adam Mickiewicz had Jewish ancestors that converted to Christianity, once they did this they were no longer Jewish in Polish eyes. It is true that there are atheist Jews that still consider themselves Jewish but do their rabbis still consider them so? Jews have always allowed for conversion too, and so what about the case of a Gentile that converts to Judaism and then later rejects its religious tenets, would that person still be a Jew? Is there a double standard that allows people born into Judaism to reject it as a religion and still remain Jews but not converts?
