I saw pictures of this ship, are you sure it was designed for 120 people? Looked pretty small to me. Either way, I feel so sorry for those scuba divers, years ago I helped in recovering the body of a 10 year old girl who'd drowned in a lake in Sweden, I can still see her reddish skin and the scratches on her body, she and several other kids were inside a cabin of a small boat that'd capsized, the kids were trying to fight their way to the door (it was pitch black) and many had scratch marks on their bodies, she was the only one who didn't make it. It's a horrible tragedy.

Ok, fair enough but how about our Czech, Slovak, and Croatian brothers and sisters? What about Slovenians, Bulgarians, Ukrainians, Belorussians, and other Slavic brothers and sisters? Before you know it Poland will be in morning year around.

This sounds very cold of me and that's not my intention but I think shows of sympathy are most effective and are appreciated the most when they come from regular citizens and not the respective governments. I say send a letter, an email or send a bouquet of flowers to the Russian embassy or maybe drive out there and sign the book of condolences. That'll mean more than what the Polish government does. I sent an email to the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC.

I disagree with your analogy Pawian, in the Smolensk accident there were Polish citizens who died on Russian territory. Not a similar scenario in this case. However, it's a tragedy for sure and I sincerely sympathize with the Russian people.

This is a weird thread, no one is "ever forced" to help out his/her parents but to me it seems to be a very natural thing to do and it has nothing to do with being from Poland or anywhere else. I know people who're helping out their parents here in the US and in Sweden and I'm sure it happens in other countries too. My dad lost part of his retirement when a company he worked for went belly up (Sweden), I've been sending money to them for some time and will be doing it as long as I can afford it. I was never pressured into it, never felt that I must do it, in fact they never asked me for any help and often protest when I do. However, they're my parents, I want to help, and I can afford it so why shouldn't I? It's common sense to me.

You know those safety flags on kids' bikes? Makes them "taller" and easier to see to other traffic. I'd imagine those double-deckers are more visible to others, wouldn't you say? Very well-known universities, the only way I wouldn't be able to attend the interview is if a close relative of mine had ended up in hospital and needed me to stick around. Those are prestigous institutions and even a brief internship will look great on your resume/CV. I say reschedule your holiday plans instead. Showing up for the interview despite your scheduling conflict will illustrate to them how serious you are about participating. Just my take on it. Good luck.

Really? If you say that you read it the way you see it "using the polish alphabet and the polish pronounciation of those letters" then I'll say, maybe, but even then, I don't think so..

Also, the grammar is more complicated.

Ja jestem -> I am
Ty jesteś -> You are
On jest -> He is
Ona jest -> She is
My jesteśmy -> We are
Wy jesteście -> You are
Oni jestą -> They are

Sprytny mężczyzna -> Smart man
Sprytna kobieta -> Smart woman
Sprytne dziecko -> Smart child
Sprytne dzieci -> Smart children

Well, those are definitely non-Polish language names The Jiddish language is based on German which is why so many jewish names sound/look German. I'm guessing the original spelling was Feinman (maybe Feinmann) as Fineman is an Americanized version of it. Often when the immigrants arrived to America they recorded their name the way it was pronounced, thus it became Fineman. (Fineman would be a very unusual spelling for a German/Jewish name in Europe).

The name Pireoshiers was possible based on this word Pirozhki but I'm not certain.

I'm sorry but what is your point? You think Polish is hard? Go downtown Shanghai and tell me what you think. ...or Osaka, or Incheon for that matter. (you'll hear Mandarin/mainland Chinese, Japanese and Korean respectively). Trust me, you'll be blown away when it comes to people "being expressive" in their own languages.

Sounds like you have rude (loud) neighbors and the fact you don't know what they're saying aggravates you even more. I don't blame you a bit.

However, you must remember that Polish is a totally different language and thus sounds much different. English is a Germanic language and therefore intonation, accentuation, etc. in other Germanic languages such as Swedish, Dutch, German, etc. will feel more similar to you than in Slavic (Polish, Czech, Bulgarian, etc.) or Romantic (Italian, French, Spanish, Romanian, etc.) languages.

I was born in Poland but moved out as a kid. So I've had to relearn Polish and I've given up on the "why's" and focus on the "just because." :))

Rosyjska (well, technically it should be Rosjanin :) - your daughter might be too young for an iPod (or iPhone) but I think you can use this program from a regular computer too. Check out innovativelanguage.com/learn-polish. I have the Mandarin and the Japanese version on my iPhone and I love it. I actually bought it on survivorphrases.com but the website doesn't come up anymore?? I think innovative language bought them because the iPhone app is still showing as "survivorphrases".

They use simple phrases and a pretty logical layout. Probably "too adult aka boring" for your daughter but it'd help you to learn Polish for sure (and your wife to learn Russian ;).

You might want to remind your wife that it takes two to tango, sounds like she's more into dancing ballet - solo. ;)

It costs ~$20 per language, I don't get any kickbacks from them, and the audiobook version was cheaper ~$12 I think but this is a good way to "hear" the language being spoken. Rosetta is probably a much better, more in depth program but costs more.
