You've asked, here is my honest answer.

And I'm happy you did it.

I can't say that I'm emotionally connected with Poland in a positive way. Draw your own conclusions.

You don't want to live in Poland or have anything to do with this country and that's ok but there are ppl that are emotionally connected with 2 countries and that's when the problem begins.

What you've got going for you in Poland if i may ask?

This is very reasonable question and maybe someone can answer that but I cannot.For me it's more about emotions than reason.I like to travel but every time I come back to Poland I feel that that's my place on Earth.I know that in some countries my life would be easier but that is not important for me.

It's just a saying not some bloody Satanic ritual..

It's not just a saying if you respect yourself and what you swear.And the problem with swearing allegiance every day is that you forget that you give your word of honor and it becomes just a sentence like some poem that you have to say.

I'm not embarrassed of swearing allegiance to the US and I have no regrets.

Give me one reason why I should feel different about it.

You shouldn't but what if you're also emotionally connected with different country?I'm not saying that you like it better but just the same?You have to repudiate the other country or lie.

Just because you’re miserable in your own country it doesn’t mean that I have to be miserable living in mine.

Noone said that you should feel miserable.I'm happy in Poland but it's interesting for me to hear from the immigrants in the US how they felt in that precise moment.

Come on, where do you draw the line at patriotism and brainwashing?

When you force ppl to do what they don't want to do or when you "love" your country so much that you hate other nations.

The media?

Media give opportunities but it's parents job to raise their children.

What you don't understand is that during "communism " times it was (and still is) much better for you not to show off.I know a guy easily worth 10 milions PLN and he is driving 95 VW Passat and when you ask him how is he doing he will tell you that he is not doing good at all.

I think it's not that.Ppl with class don't show off and it has nothing to do with communism-it was always a
faux pas to be flashy.

We say "Nouveau riche"

We have nuworysze but it's about ppl who were promoted to the upper class(by money or education) but are still not accepted there.The word nowobogaccy means ppl that are wealthy but stupid and with bad taste.

Parents.Who else?Why the school or the church?

Check out the Amish/Plain People stuff on another thread. They get by without all that crap and are probably happier and much richer in themselves for it.

I agree but I wouldn't give up my PC :)

Nevertheless, a bank in Poland (a well known one) did a very private survey of their richest 10% of clients a few years ago and were surprised that over half of them hadn't been abroad, even for a holiday, in the past 10 years and tended to drive mid-range cars.

I always thought that REALLY rich ppl don't show off.They have big money but they don't have to brag about it-they know what they have.

There is beautiful word in Polish:nowobogaccy (nem money)-that's the kind of ppl that always talks abot what they have.

What I think is the worst? The rat race, the "always be first and the best" attitude, if you're not original and popular than you're nothing...Many things...Mostly the attitude that you have to be Someone.

I think swearing allegiance to a foreign power does amount to betrayal. Living elsewhere - no problem. But when you pledge allegiance to a foreign power...well. Lenka:

And this is why sadly wjhy many of those peasant rednecks that moved to North America now look down on people here. I've noticed time and time again - people seem to think that Poland owes them something because they sent a few dollars over here.

They helped but if they think they are better just because of that then they are just idiots and we shouldn't care.

I pity those cowards who ran away from their country and swore allegiance to foreign powers, personally. I can't imagine ever betraying my homeland in such a way.

If you think that not living in your country is betrayal than...I just think you have very narrow understanding of the word patriot.It's nothing bad(many ppl does) but I think it's not that easy.

Sending a few presents and visiting for two weeks does nothing to help Poland.

You're wrong-this things helped some ppl to survive.And sending money to Poland helped our economy.These money were spend in Poland and helped Polish companies.

Law / Question about the drinking laws of Poland. [45]

I play basketball over here and I love it, and I was wondering how popular the sport is over there and if there is a lot of kids that play it.

Some ppl play it but football is much more popular.However you shouldn't have problems to find the team.

I never got ID'd once.

I'm 24 and 4 months ago I was asked for ID.Since I don't have this problem on daily basis I didn't have it with me.If it wasn't for my friend I wouldn't get my beer :)

I remember when my friend was turning 18. She came to a pub with friends yo celebrate in the day of her birthsday and guess what! They (the pub staff) did not let her to drink untill midnight! That's true! ;DDD

This is example how law can be ridiculed. She wasn't more responsible or adult at 12 than she was at 8.

I think it's better for her to drink 1-2 beers with responsible adult that in secret. On the other hand an adult who is drinking with teenager can be accused of demoralisation.

I'm not sure if giving/proposing an alcohol to unadult is not a law offend.

My old man(father) and uncles used to say this to me when i was a kid and beyond...hope my polish spelling is right-----" nie udawaj greka "......which obviously means don't act a greek,...........so my question is???are greeks gypsies,or does it imply something else ???or would they have said it to me because i was a smartarse(aussie slang)know-it-all !!!

Don't act like you don't know/understand what's going on.
It's usually used when a person is trying to pretend that she doesn't know anything.For example when the kid tells you that he doesn't know who ate all the sweets or when parents are yelling and the kid is all "but why are mad"

Travel / Alcohol prices in Poland (Zakopane). [Off-Licence / Store] [20]

We are curious of the prices of alcohol in the off-license and supermarkets.

The prices in every shop are quite the same.
The cherry vodka is called Wiśniówka.
Can of beer-from 2 zł for really nasty and cheap beer up to (i think) 4 zł
Bottle of vodka up to 30 zł.
And I don't know anything about the strippers

polish girls wake up and reply to all what ppl saying on blogs about u .. they think polish girls are for rent or sale or they are commodity.. try to make the world understand that u are respectable more than them

And we won't change their mind.And why should we?They'll understand it when they'll be slapped in the face for the first time.And I have to admit that there're girls that have "foreigners fetish" and will go with every guy that have weird accent.

I misunderstood you so I have to edit my post.
The word "ów" is old-fashioned and reraly used in the present. You can use "ów" when you don't want to repeat yourself ans say all the time ...ze...ze...ze and when you want to sound more eloquent.

Genealogy / DNA Testing in Poland. Is it popular? [81]

DNA doesn't stamp out my family tree out for me.

It only gives you an idea about what group of people share similar DNA.It don't say nothing about stories of this people and that's what I'm looking for in my family history.

The coats of arms that were passed down from father to son, and were either kept the same, changed slightly, or even quartered to include the mothers paternal heraldic device.

I'm among this fortunate ppl that have this things.My brother found our coats of arm- it's great we have this piece of information.

Sure, that Americans seem to travel through different countries and time in thier heads, believing that they were Polish or Irish etc...

Now I get it although I don't know If I agree with you entirely.

Nobody has pure and perfect genetic lines going back hundreds of years

Of course someone has pure and perfect genetic line going back to the firt people on the planet- I do ;D And now let's be serious- are you really interested in your ancestors from 11th century? It would be nice to know that but just as some kind of curiosity. And btw- DNA test are only showing you some traces and don't tell you anything really important.

Well you'd have to probably have a pretty good interest in history, genealogy, family, and such to want to spend the time or money on it.

And your ancestry would have to be unclear.I think it's more frequent in US and therefore DNA tests are more popular there.

It's an interesting point though, don't you think, Americans spend that money on their own fantasy.

Could you explain that to me because I don't quite get it?

There is no "Polish" gene.

Of course not but deep down in my soul I know that we have one special gene that makes us so perfect and better than other nations ;D

The 46 marker test on ancestry.com is $179

What makes it about 500 zł (I've checked Polish sites and it's 620 zł)-I doubt that any of my friends would spend such money on tests.They would probably prefer to go on holiday.

I must say that I've never heard someone mentioning DNA tests. Maybe it's because of the money? Anyway I don't know anybody who took the tests or is planning to do so.

If you are Polish, have you been DNA tested?

No, I'm not interested in that. As far as I know all my family is pure Polish. My brother checked our genealogy and everything seems clear. If I had some not Polish ancestors in,let's say, 17th century I don't care.
