Polonia / POLES vs BULGARIANS [160]

but like in Kraków-region you'll find much more, if not sympathy, empathy for Ukrainians than for Germans

Germans are another case

One day even the last Polish redneck will notice that WW2 is over and times are different now...

Polonia / POLES vs BULGARIANS [160]

So much about Polish rednecks.

I didn't say that nothing has changed in Poland since 1945. Just explain to me why you come across so many anti-German and anti-Russian posts here, and then we talk about (Plastic) Polish rednecks again.

Polonia / POLES vs BULGARIANS [160]

Most probably no one ... of Polish rednecks is posting here.

Even worse: then those prejudices are spread mainly amongst the (Plastic) Polish intelligentsia?

- excludnig me

Polonia / What about the Poles living in Germany? [65]

We lived in Munich for over ten years...too long

Living in Oberpframmern for over 10 years is definitely something I would call hardship...

However I think Plastic Polish Inteligentsia is too stupid to have prejudices.

They call it 'opinion' instead. :)

History / What British unit liberated Poland in 1945?? [445]

It's demagogy pure to use the same political standards while comparing some medieval and present events.

Well, isn't that exactly the way how the historic right of Poland to certain areas in Europe is always explained by some people on this forum? ;)

News / The "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign theft from Oswiecim, Poland [240]

the polish police said officially that the culprits aren't neo-nazis

Who knows. Maybe they just want to avoid the impression that there actually ARE neo-nazis and anti-semites roaming freely in Poland...

lousy fokker

Glad you agree with me... :)

History / Polish-German alliance. [489]

even the german kids learn about all this at school now, s0o they are not being allowed to forget.

You know what? They are teaching that sh*t in German schools since the 1950's already. Not being allowed to forget? Most younger Germans I know are completely fed up with this blame game, and just ignore it. That's the outcome of not being allowed to forget...

History / Life in communism vs democracy in Poland [234]

the US has 50% more graduates than Germany

Maybe the public US highschools have a lower standard that makes graduation easier than in Germany?

USA, Canada / REFUSED A HOLIDAY VISA TO THE U.S CAUSE IM POLISH [323]

And that is exactly true.

Poland doesn't want to lose all their educated people who will then stay illegally in the US

I doubt that, as Poles could easily settle and work in EU member states. An American government restricting Polish immigration is no obstacle in this respect.

History / Have Poles blood on their hands? :) [496]

the key-point here is whether these people did what they did as Poles or as Germans/Ruthenians/Whatever else

If they never identified as Poles then obviously they were never Polish.

So only ethnic Poles "count" and not Polish citizens in general? Isn't that a bit too simple?

History / Have Poles blood on their hands? :) [496]

The majority state will refer to those minorities ironically as "the other" where all good deeds are in this case Polish and all bad deeds German, Ukrainian etc.

Well, that's what Harry meant and that's what I was also trying to point out: painting everything in black and white is too easy.

rzeczpospolita is not actually 'republic'

So this

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rzeczpospolita

is partly wrong?

History / Have Poles blood on their hands? :) [496]

because of an American ignorance/laziness - call it whatever you want - on Ellis, for example, many people lost their identities

Because they were listed as Russians, Prussians/Germans or Austrians, and not as Poles? That's nonsense. The immigration officers at Ellis Island and elsewhere didn't care about ethnicity (most of the time); citizenship was important.

Oh, okay - misunderstood you.

Nope. Sorry for not fitting into your world view... :)

Life / Are Poles winter lovers? [63]

Snow? I prefer a snow-white beach instead. And while we're at it: get rid of the regular Christmas tree and get me a nice palm tree. :)

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

It is called language contact and has happened for as long as languages have been spoken

Although the English language is somewhat "imperialistic" in this respect...

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Not really - 'useful' or 'popular' might be a better description

Well, there are reasons why English is the modern lingua franca. Colonial oppression, WW1 and WW2 come to mind for example.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

In Poland?

Didn't you know that Poland was a British colony for a long time? ;)

English as a lingua franca reaches far further...

But it has replaced French as the diplomatic language and German as the language of science for example. IMHO, languages are in a "competition" with each other, and English is spread quite aggressively throughout the world.

There were several places in Prussia/ the German Empire (Poland didn't exist at that time!) that carried the name Popowko:

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

German had a significant influence on the Polish language

There are quite a few words in the German language that have Polish roots. For example:

Grenze - granica
Peitsche - bicz
Säbel - szabla
Zeisig - czyż

History / What British unit liberated Poland in 1945?? [445]

Well, there seem to be at least two different versions of history floating around here. Which one is yours? The one where Poland regained her independence through some heroic uprising and without any outside help? :)
