News / Poland blocks any action on climate change [569]

What environmental laws in the US are not tight enough?

Let's start with undoing the rollback of regulations by the EPA under Scott Pruitt.

How much would you be willing to pay in taxes or expenses to reduce the global temp ... This calls for a number.

Why taxes? Why a number? That's far too simplistic. It starts with your personal behavior. Reduce consumption, switch off lights after leaving a room, don't waste water. The list is endless.

I don't give a sh*it

Have you told your grandkids already?

Just fill in the blanks.

1. Tighten environmental laws instead of undermining them for profit
2. Close down coal fired power plants
3. Reduce the usage of plastic packaging material as much as possible
...
plus a multitude of other necessary actions. JR mentioned two in his post above.

1000 times more important than the "global warming"

Global warming is just one factor of many that endanger the planet.

Its doesn't make a bit of difference with these rogue countries that don't care at all.

It certainly makes a difference. The USA is the second largest polluter on the planet. If we would get our act together environmentally, the planet would benefit big time. Someone has to start with the cleanup, or we are all screwed.

the country that sent its manufacturing and the pollution to China

Very true.

They dont care one bit about pollution.

So we don't care either? Out of spite? Cleaning up the environment benefits Americans right here at home.

We kill the oceans, burn the forests, drive countless species to extinction and multiply as if there's no tomorrow. Sure we will adapt, but the future doesn't look too inviting if you ask me.

DDT and Agent Orange had not been developed yet.

Huh? 30 years ago was 1989. Insects everywhere. Agent Orange was already used during the Vietnam War, and DDT was developed in 1874 (!) and is banned in the US since 1972.

The birds eat the toxic bugs.

Not toxic. See above.

And guess what, there are more polar bears now than ever.

Stick your head in the sand and wait for the burning forests to set your ass on fire.

You'll only have to drive an hour up and down the highway to notice that something is wrong. How many bugs on your windshield compared to 30 years ago? But according to you science deniers, it must be the increasing number of birds that make the insect populations collapse. Oh wait, the birds are on their way out, too? That's the fault of wind turbines, right? Let's build some coal fired power plants then. Who cares about our children and grandchildren. You people are dinosaurs.

ice melting

How about you google for disappearing glaciers worldwide? Or for the melting ice cap of Greenland.

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

What is "Brexit"?

Brazilian Exit... :)

the majority intends to stay in the UK after Brexit

Have the population planners in Poland taken that into account already? Losing approx. 1 million young people (mostly between 20 and 40 years of age) to the U.K. alone is quite significant.

People expect home to be home.

Exactly. You have a certain memories and expectations about your home country. When you finally return, you'll realize that the image in your head has nothing to do with reality anymore.

whether Poles return or not is the least important matter to them.

Well, it will certainly matter when a million Polish expats return home all of a sudden. Poland was very happy in 2004 when it was able to ease its unemployment problem by exporting people to Britain, Ireland and Sweden. Remember?

coming back to stay will be a very big adjustment

People will have to ask themselves what country really is their home. After a decade or more, the place of residence becomes your home and your country of origin a distant memory. That's at least how it was for me.

and it's no easier (and often far more difficult) to _readapt_ to

But that is true for every country. Once you lived abroad for a decade or so, returning to your home country will always be kind of a shock unless you visit on a regular basis.

Polonia / What are qualites of Germans? [60]

Why is it frightening? Because it's "ze Germans"? I for one would ask which powerful western countries are openly promoting their right wing, nationalistic ideas right now. That's where the work has to start. Hint: it's not Germany.

History / Occupation of Eastern Poland in 1939 [97]

But not half a country!

I know that, Miloslaw. There are different forms of occupation, though. Anyway, without the Soviet sacrifice the Allies wouldn't have set a toe on Omaha Beach in 1944.

the Western allies handed over most of the power to the newly founded FRG

West and East Germany were de facto occupied until the early 1990s, even if it wasn't visible in daily life. If you believe that the Germans were able to make their own strategic decisions (both militarily and politically), you are naive. May I remind you of the Pershing II stationing and the violent, but ultimately useless demonstrations against it, or who insisted to have the final say in the reunification process? The Deutsche Mark had to be given up, because the French wouldn't have given their okay for the reunification otherwise. It was Reagan and Gorbachev who decided Germany's fate; the Germans had no say in it (although Kohl was quite clever). Just a few quick examples...

West Berlin?

The British troops in the west were officially NATO, but we all know what their real purpose was. NATO's first secretary general, Hastings Ismay: "...the organization's mission is to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down."

History / Occupation of Eastern Poland in 1939 [97]

The Russian sacrifice was not to "Liberate" but to invade.

And the allies in the west didn't invade? You just have to compare the number of war dead of the US, the USSR and the UK in the European theater to see who really defeated the Germans.

History / Occupation of Eastern Poland in 1939 [97]

There are countless examples. The GDR claimed that they prosecuted each and every Nazi, and that no brownshirt was left on East German soil after that. Only the West Germans were still Nazis. The Americans and Brits claim they liberated Europe, conveniently forgetting the sacrifice of the Soviets.

Russians have always loved to twist history

Just like everybody else. The version of history that is taught in Britain or the US is completely different to the one taught in Poland, Germany or Russia.

since you doubtless never knew just how great, how mind-blowingly wonderful, the good times were.

Make America great again? You seem to have quite a distorted view of how "wonderful" the 1950's and 1960's really were. I attribute that to latent naivete. LOL!

it wasn't entirely meant as a compliment!

Oh, I know... :)

little regard to how they mutilate English

Non-native speakers couldn't care less if their English sounds right or the grammar is correct as long as they get their message across. Remember: English is simply a tool to communicate with someone who doesn't speak your language. Nothing more to it.

And why English has been such a success?

The British Empire and the outcome of WW1 and WW2 might have something to do with it, don't you think?

We can't stand expat Aussies

"We" as in idiot Chicago PolAms? Glad to hear that.

Wanting to do or be doesn't always necessarily mean that someone is any good at it.

Again: be happy that they are making the effort to talk to you in English. They might as well just ignore you or pretend not to understand.

She could've pretended not to understand, but instead she was being nice and tried to help. Now imagine you go out of your way like that, and the guy in front of you starts complaining about your English.
