History / Warsaw Rising 1944 - National Disaster or Triumph of Spirit ? [395]

So the Associated Press published the following blurb regarding the anniversary of the Warsaw Rising:

WARSAW, Poland -- Poland is holding its annual homage to the thousands of people who died while trying to liberate Warsaw from Germany's Nazi forces during World War II, and this year some observances will be shown live on Facebook for the first time.
On Thursday, the Warsaw Rising Museum will show on its Facebook page people stopping in Warsaw's streets at 1500 GMT (11 a.m. EDT), the hour in 1944 when thousands of residents began trying to free Warsaw from the Germans, as the Soviet Red Army advanced on the city.
The poorly armed fighters of the clandestine Home Army fought for 63 days. Some 200,000 residents and fighters were killed, and the Germans razed the city. Later, when Poland was under communist control, recognizing that historic event was forbidden.

I found the wording quite interesting: thousands of residents began trying to free Warsaw from the Germans, as the Soviet Red Army advanced on the city.

Technically it is correct that the Soviets were advancing. Why do you think the AP would conveniently omit the fact that once the fireworks started, the Advancing Soviets decided to check up on the other side of the river?

Travel / Taxi Fare - WAW to Międzylesie [18]

From the airport cab rank, it will probably cost around ($32 Canadian), much more after 10pm or on a Sunday. You can however be sure they're insured, sober and probably decent.

That seems comparable to what I would expect to pay here in Canada.. The fare would be around 2 pm, during a weekday.

Many thanks Kowalski, Jon and Sobieski.

Love / Polish women are the most beautiful in the world! [1718]

Emily Ratajkowski: From Wiki....

Ratajkowski was born in London, England and raised in Encinitas, California.[citation needed] Her parents are both artists-her father a painter of Polish descent and her mother an English professor and writer. Her parents' artist sensibilities led Emily to live and travel to many parts of Europe at a young age.

Travel / Taxi Fare - WAW to Międzylesie [18]

It obviously where in Miedzylesie

Lets say it is near the Instytut Pomnik - Centrum Zdrowia Dziecka...

Do the cabs standing at the airport charge more for the privilege of standing there or is it cheaper to call one of the companies on Kowalski's link?

USA, Canada / PolishAmericanReview's review of current events in America [48]

Not entirely. He started what could have been a perfectly interesting topic (with smoke - indicating there might have been flame) about the Jaruzelski movie, but quickly went on a rant which irritated the mods resulting in the whole thread being binned.

News / Demolish Poland's Palace of Culture? [55]

I like the way it stands out on the horizon while flying in to WAW. I think it would be a shame to get rid of it or attempt to understate it. So many good things could be derived from it in it's current form if it was to be used as an iconic / historic structure.

Life / New Royal Baby Boy - Recommended Polish Baby Names [21]

This is more Germanic than Polish tho.

If the name was good enough for Świętosława.....

Keep in mind, the UK has a very multi-ethnic feel to it and by embracing their past Polish heritage and the present number of Poles on UK soil, it would go a long way in making the current Poles there feel welcome.

Alexandra had pretty good odds I understand if it had of been a girl (although the name is spelled incorrectly). Imagine that: Princess Ola.

Life / New Royal Baby Boy - Recommended Polish Baby Names [21]

Not a fan of the Royals?

The Royal family in todays form is nothing like the pillaging barbarians you refer to. Yes they may be billionaires, but they bring more to the table for the UK compared to the cost they bear. I feel they bring real value to the UK economy.

I herby object to this thread being re-classified to that of an official thread, saved from the jaws of off-topic.

Life / New Royal Baby Boy - Recommended Polish Baby Names [21]

I think they should name the new royal child Cnut or Canute. At least recognize the Polish Heritage that goes deep into Royal History in the UK. As you may know,

Cnut was of Danish and Slavic descent. His father was Sweyn Forkbeard, King of Denmark (which gave Cnut the patronym Sweynsson, Old Norse Sveinsson). Cnut's mother was the daughter of the first duke of the Polans, Mieszko I; her name may have been Świętosława (see: Sigrid Storråda),[5][6][7] but the Oxford DNB article on Cnut states that her name is unknown.[8]

Apparently some historians feel that Canute was one of the most effective kings in Anglo Saxon History.

What are your thoughts?

Life / English Speaking Doctors (Psychiatrist) in Poland? [14]

There was a link on the PF page that would have brought you to the Synapsis Group. If you can't make use of their services in Poznan, they may be able to refer you to somebody who is in Poznan that can service you in English.

News / Poland -- an Indonesian's eye view [7]

My perspective would be probably closer to the authors, compared to a native or a long term resident who truly feels the vibe of the place on a daily basis.

History / Polish archaeologists unearth 'vampire grave' [18]

According to The News:

The last recorded instance of a vampire burial within current Polish borders was in the village of Stare Mierzwice, Masovia, in 1914. A corpse was dug up in the village, and the head was cut off and placed between the person's legs.
