History / Polish - Scottish history - which part of Krakow did Scots settle? [4]

Recently in Scotland there has been a big influx of Poles living here getting into Scots history, especially where our history is tied.

Poles are making a massive map of Scotland to celebrate the ties ect
mapascotland.org

I was wondering in which part of Krakow did Scots settle, history tells us they were given a district but finding info on that district is difficult.

UK, Ireland / Scots better than Poles? [41]

The History of the Kilt stretches back to at least the end of the 16th century....

Unfortunately you choose to read articles on wiki rather than history. First kilts were worn in Scotland and Ireland around 400BC if you go by statues and drawings dated back to then...

...These people are simply believing what they have been told

Hardly misconceptions, the Statue of Galician King.
Kilt, or plaid depending on what historical evidence you choose to follow is far older than a 16th century's modern romance with the highlands. It was firstly used as a blanket that would be tied around the waist. I guess you think folk walked about in adidas tracksuits lol

Geeez, wish some folk would read about history rather than google the crap ;)

The Kilt was dress for the lairds never for the common folk as myth would have you believe.

Can you imagine lairds up in the glens stealing cattle and needing a blanket lol

The kilt was a practical dress wear for gaelic tribes long before the romantics took the notion. According to the Romans ect.

News / Polish people's criticism of European Union [104]

Yes, I do. I created this thread after all and posted the following things:

You still dodge it by trying to change my question, but how much money did Poland contribute and how much money did Poland take? On a governmental basis, not on how many pounds Polish people who left Poland bring back or send over.

Well apparently Poland is a third world country..

Poland has never been a third world country and has never been accepted as so since joining the EU. In fact it is one of only a few countries that didn't go into recession.

Personally as an Englishman I don't feel we (England) should have any claim over Scots, Welsh or Northern Irish...
But maybe some have prospered over the years...

I'd then ask why the Tories have been so keen to keep us out of the union. Considering they are the most hated party in the north and cant even buy a vote...

I hope Poland can prosper within the EU... if not then what's the point? Just to pay for civil servants... no thank you...

We all do.

Poland will take at first, but it won;t be too long until they're paying for someone else... it's all swings and roundabouts...

Yeah but during a recession and only a couple of days ago Polish ministers were complaining about cuts to the EU members spending. Can't be part of the EU if you expect to have better treatment, we are all part of the same thing.

Disagreement. :):)

Erm not really, explain.

Not really, but thanks, anyway. :):)

Well you did, what does Poland joining the EU have to do with the union of GB? If you are trying to compare modern day Scotland which raised 49bn for the UK government last year yet has just passed the budget given to it by London of 32bn then its a bit wrong. I ask again how much did Poland contribute to the EU and then how much did Poland receive from the EU?

Sorry, my calculator broke down. :):):)

Cos you know the answer already ;)

Yes, like Scotland after joining Great Britain.:)

Aha, no not like that at all, but nice try to dodge the subject. How many Billions does Poland put into the EU and how much does it take?

This article reads that due to good weather, sugar beetroot crops were at record level this year. But euro quotas imposed on Poland`s sugar production say it is illegal to produce more than we are allowed to.

This is the norm in all EU countries. Why over produce more when you could use that space to create other money making things.

Poland has had it good for a long time since joining the EU, again as the above person said, don't bite the hand that feeds you.

Travel / Hard Candy - Krakow, Poland - reviews? [131]

Geeeez oh, I mind outting this place over 5 years ago! Can't believe it's still up to it's old tricks! Pmsl

Always check the reviews of places before heading out, that said I think only this place and two others were running the scam. It's a well shady place, owners are Slovakian I think.

You can argue rationality, but you cannot argue truth

What? Make some sense lad! What truth? U base everything on faith... faith has no basis with truth. Hence why it is faith...

Like, i cannot explain why Beethoven is a genius, i can only affirm that he is in fact a genius, by sheer force of personal conviction.

Beethoven is a proven genious because he is a real person who achieved more than the average man, he isn't a made up tale no is he fiction. He was a real person.

By sheer force of conviction the wizard of oz is a real person if u believe in him enough. Shouting "it's true, it's true, it's true" doesnt make it true.

But that requires a level of individual assertion which tends to disorient liberals, because it defies their herd-like view of humanity.

So many mistakes in that quote I can't really be bothered going through them. Idiot would be the best way to describe the person who wrote it.

What from: "Every single country that forcibly dismantled organized religion as we know it (the wet dream of any and all "I'm smarter then fairytale-worshipers" activist) turned out to be some sort of murderous concentration camp dictatorship, and a complete screw-up in any category that counts other than building weapons and creating tension" you don't understand.

I understand what you thought was a valid point clearly. but as soon as you launch into comparing atheists with concentration camps then the idea will be bound with the Hitler argument... meaning dead in the water.

On the other hand when everyone was able and allowed to read The Bible The Ages of Discovery and Enlightenment happened. Many of the folks who ushered in these ages were devout Bible readers. Yes, there was also radicalism.

Yep they did happen, i doubt so many people read the bible without being forced, those that made the brightest discoveries were hammered by the church, even excommunicated. The church took a very distant stand against science... but hey are you using examples from 200 years ago? Cos even the CC admit that Alien life exists.

God but use The Bible for it's moral teachings

The bible is a moral book, nothing less nothing more. Thats it. A freakin book.

I rest my case. You have proved my point exactly.

This will probably pee u off, but the bible is banned in our hospital unless the patient asks for it. Religious christian groups attempt quite often to preach to our patients, often pretending to be members of patients families to access people receiving complex care... I guess they should be preying on those who are vunerable mentally...

When you call yourself an atheist, an enemy of "worshiping", you are professing to know something you cannot possibly know.

This is a really strange statement from a bible basher, considering your belief is based only on faith rather than fact.

Every single country that forcibly dismantled organized religion as we know it (the wet dream of any and all "I'm smarter then fairytale-worshipers" activist) turned out to be some sort of murderous concentration camp dictatorship, and a complete screw-up in any category that counts other than building weapons and creating tension.

Strange, you head straight for the Hitler argument... Religious orders were all for mass killing of non-believers or other faiths, bit of a dead argument heading in that direction.

Atheists only appear to be right if your intellectual level is that of a child.

Like believing in something such as Santa and the Easter bunny... The difference between a religious person and an atheist is that the religious person has faith in made up stories from the past.

It takes a greater deal of intellectual maturity to comprehend metaphysical concepts.

I'll have what ever drugs you are taking. In that view I should be believing that orks are running around and praying that the white wizard comes to save us all.

And on that note, I can see that any further conversation with you is a total waste of time.

Shouldn't really have started it. I have psych patients that make more sense...

Islamophobia is not a Polish problem, but it is a problem for people like gavin, so much the worse for him and his sad ilk.

I find this hard to believe. A lot of the Poles I know would feel badly about a Mosque being erected in their city, or even Muslims being an accepted part of their culture. Jokes about the Jews are almost on the same level as jokes about Muslims or blacks.

Food / What made in Poland produce would you recommend [110]

Some are good, some are ok, some are really really bad. I have some gritty ligament ridden sausages while in Poland.
Never ever found a decent polish burger, I would normally make them myself if I needed to. Pork was good, chicken depends where you go. Lamb is good the closer you are to the mountains. Do they mature beef after slaughtering?

Let me get on the scratcher to a few Krk friends, see if they can reserve rooms for certain dates once we have decided.

Like I said before, I'm easy on dates but with my kind of work I do I need advance notice. Only certain people are qualified to work in my ward (challenging behavior - self harming, suicidal, arson, aggressive behavior and schizophrenic) so can only get holidays when someone on the other shift agrees to sign a "contract" to cover my days off. The joys of my job :D

I recommend we do something, a concert is probably the easiest for all and if it's a free concert, well then that means nobody has an excuse :)

Sounds good, I'm up for anything as long as there is beer.....been over a year since I've stepped in a pub. Not because of a lack of drink though, mainly cos the pubs round here are a bit weegie like.

May long weekend could be good: 1-3 of May. Davie cannot make it before that and I agree that there should be NO paintballing.
Nice food, good drinks and good company. I will notify other people

Agreed, food, drink atmosphere....what more do you need? Some dancing girls would be nice but I will skip them this time around.
