Work / Moving to Poland, Working for a UK Company [34]

I'll have to sort that out pretty quickly.

Which province are you in? Some of them have disastrous waiting times for residence permits - which can be an additional problem.

Either way, get your application in this week - the sooner, the better.

Work / Moving to Poland, Working for a UK Company [34]

Generally speaking, you can't stay on the PAYE books while living in PL. They'll have to open a branch company and pay you through that, which I assume they won't do. In terms of taxation, you'll get a tax credit for any tax paid to the UK government while being tax resident in PL.

BTW, as you've arrived now, you legally can't work for the UK company until you obtain a residence permit. As it stands, you're breaking the law by working illegally in PL. They can and will check this - be warned, particularly of jealous family members who might not be too happy about you getting a UK income while living here.

Life / Do Polish people have a good ear for music? [91]

It was a complete waste of time. He was a bad, bad teacher who thought that his subject was the most important, which led to several conflicts with other teachers.

News / How could PiS better spend billions instead of 500+ ? [275]

Did I mention that 500+`s main objective, ie. raise the number of newborns in Poland, has failed?

It's absolutely failed. The latest story - innpoland.pl/165325,spadla-liczba-urodzen-wzrosla-za-to-liczba-zgonow

They show that the number of births in 2020 was the lowest since 2004 and amounted to 357.4 thousand.

It is clear and categorical proof that 500+ is just an electoral bribe and simply doesn't encourage anyone to give birth, except perhaps pathological families where they think that 500+ is going to make a material change to their living conditions.

The Polish attitude

I'm almost certain this all comes from school. I worked with one particular imbecile who flat out told kids not to bother singing unless they could sing properly.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1303]

I think originally they wanted to make carp a regular food

Yes, I think so too. It's fascinating how people believe that it's a genuine tradition, yet by all accounts, it was just another fish among many on the table. There's a fascinating article here about it - tokfm.pl/Tokfm/1,103085,8852873,Karp___ryba_kontrowersyjna_i_tania.html - the thing I didn't know until recently is that carp is doing all sorts of damage to the ecosystem too.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

Is there anywhere else that sells them in Warsaw?

Auchan sells HP sauce, or at least they used to.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1303]

The way the food has constantly changed and evolved is fascinating.

I do find it endlessly interesting how "Polish food" today is more or less a post-1945 invention by the Communists in order to maximise calories for people doing physical work.

I read this a few weeks ago - ciekawostkihistoryczne.pl/2017/10/12/polskie-jadlo-tradycyjna-kuchnia-to-wszystko-bujda-co-naprawde-przed-wojna-jadali-zwykli-polacy/ - about how peasant cooking in Poland was really nothing like how people think it was.

UK, Ireland / Ad from my UK newspaper today : not worth a zloty [13]

Nitpicking Vincent, but the Bank of Ireland, First Trust Bank and Dansk Bank all issue £100 notes as well.

I was never particularly keen on them, though. I once got paid for a summer of work in them, and it was a nightmare to break them.

Law / I have D Type Cel Wydania 10 visa? What EU countries can I visit with it? [17]

Am I allowed to enter schengen area through other countries??

In general, yes, unless the visa is territorially limited to Poland. Poland doesn't tend to issue such visas though.

If I remember rightly, you have 4 days to transit to Poland from the country that you first enter in order for the visa to 'start'.

Language / Postcard from Wolyn.. translation if possible.. [19]

Btw, I've just bought a letter posted in the year 1849 from Breslau to a nearby village for a bargain price.

Do you collect such things, Ziemowit?

History / The Bar Mleczny / Milk Bar (memories) [15]

It's funny how the milk bar has evolved. These days, while subsidies have been heavily cut to such institutions, you can find replacements - modern milk bars, where service is usually with a smile and where the food is actually of decent quality rather than being very hit or miss. There's quite a few around Poland now, and I hope they survive the pandemic.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1303]

If I remember correctly it technically is a pasta?

Apparently it is! I don't quite understand how that works, but it's tasty all the same.

I don't eat potatoes

Potatoes are generally a miss for me here as well. I'll make potato wedges with the skins kept on, but that's about it.

Food / What do non-Poles think about eating the following Polish foods? [1303]

I'm not admitting to loving it after my previous statements ;) But I think it's because it's not dry, so it's much more edible.

I eat loads of it as I quite often cook Moroccan food.

It works with almost anything, and it's way better than pasta/rice/spaghetti.

Law / Karta Pobytu application and Sworn Translator in Warsaw [5]

Nah, no need to translate your passport as long as it's in the standard international format. Just photocopy all the pages that have been filled in - the front cover, the information page and any pages with stamps on them.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

I think there pretty good

You might like souvlaki - cyprus.com/cypriot-souvlaki/ - I was in Cyprus last year, and it was incredible stuff. I found one place in Nicosia where people were going in, handing over money and just getting one to go without any formality. The beauty was that everything was fresh - the meat was being cooked constantly, the salad was incredibly fresh, and the bread was being constantly prepared as well. All it needed was some lemon juice and job done.

UK, Ireland / My bad experiences with Polish neighbours in UK (not meant to offend) [173]

The cultural 'fit'

I always wondered if this was one reason why some of the 2004-13 migrants stood out so much, because they simply weren't very culturally compatible compared to the previous European ones, especially in smaller rougher towns where someone boozing outside a local shop would stand out a mile if they were adults.

Then again, I suppose you could argue that such people would be a poor fit in many cities now in Poland.

Food / British food products in Poland? [334]

What I find surprising is the lack of some take away home meals place in UK

Maybe because the frozen food culture is so strong in comparison to Poland?
