Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

VOLODARSKY/VOLODARSKI: Have no idea what this means, my mom claims it's Jewish

"My surname is Szczucki, that is from my father."
Haha awesome, that means you're a carnivorous fish in plural form

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4500]

Hi I was curious to find out the origin of my maternal granparents surnames. My grandfather's was Serok, born in Ostrołęka and my grandmother's was Nowik born in Pinsk.

Well the word "nowy" means new, so Nowik would probably mean something along the lines of "new man" or "new person"

Don't know what "Serok" means, sorry

History / What do Poles owe to Germans? [451]

"What do Poles owe to Germans?"

Hundreds of years of suppression and the worst genocide of the 20th century

I think Germany would like it if Poland decides not to pay back the "debt"

Life / If I'm agnostic, deist, atheist - can I say that to Polish people in Poland? [72]

The only bad religion is extremism

Most people in Poland will not have problems with you being atheistic, as long as you don't rub it in everyone's face, because nobody likes that. In fact, Poland is a lot more atheistic compared to countries such as USA or United Kingdom. As in every country in the world, there will be some people who are bothered by that, and that is completely normal, because you cannot expect every person in the world to tolerate you, unfortunately

News / "Lack of Common Sense in Politics and Society" - political correctness in Poland [32]

I steer left on the political compass, but I don't like the excessive Political Correctness in America. It's evolved beyond civility, and turned into flat-out censorship. Sure, saying the you-know-what-n-word isn't very good due to its extensive racist connotations, but what's wrong with calling a mean woman a b****? Or calling a mean guy a d***?

Racist words have also been taken to a new level, as now it's considered an offense to say "Jew". What the hell, I'm Jewish, and I'm not offended by that word at all
