Food / Siemieniotka [14]

If you can't find hemp seeds, pot seeds will do. :->
My wife makes it each Christmas. She says it tastes horrible, but it wouldn't be Christmas without it. Her sons both love it so...

As my wife makes it it involves boiling the seeds, grinding them, boiling again, grinding again... repeat as many times as your patience allows.
At the last boiling add some onion, then when it's done salt and pepper to taste.
And she is Śląsk and only makes it at Christmas..

Oh, and throw away what's left of the seeds and the onions. Siemieniotka is the broth.
And my wife tells me I shouldn't say "grind" like meat I should say "hit it and beat it" like a husband

Food / Polish name for cut of beef [29]

if the cow is slaughtered in a distressing fashion

I think it has a lot more to do with the cow it came from. A young cow, milk fed, gives very tender meat. (veal) A dairy cow that has grown too old to produce will give tough stringy meat. Corn fed gives tender, fatty meat, range fed gives tougher, leaner meat....

And PLEASE don't use rib eyes for hamburger! It's a waste of a good steak and doesn't have enough fat to make a decent burger!

Party why Kobe beef is so good

They make them very very happy their whole life, not just at the end. Plus, they feed them beer lees, massage them daily and never allow them any exercise. I've heard the beef is great, but in a year and a half in Japan I never had enough money to try it.

Oh, and I think making Kobe beef burgers is a capital offense. lol
And yes, you can add fat to rib eye to make it a better burger, but why? I like my burgers, but a pan fried rib eye with mushrooms in a nice red wine sauce........

UK, Ireland / Corned beef & Cabbage are typically Irish? [98]

they did not ferment their food for preservation like Europeans did. I do not know how valid this theory is

hegemoniacal

Is that egomaniacal hegemony?

Turks shouldn't`t interfere. Simple, shouldn`t

Poles should interfere. But only on my side.

Life / The nature of Polish jokes? [125]

The Russians turns to the Pole and says "You are forbidden to leave the plane!" The Pole says "F**k you!" and jumps out.

Love / What strange/unnerving/funny things do your Polish wives do? [153]

Every time she lights a cigarette she tries to steal my lighter. If I don't snatch it back it disappears. On our first flight to Poland, back when lighters were completely forbidden, security found 14 lighters in her purse.

Love / What strange/unnerving/funny things do your Polish wives do? [153]

I've seen a Polish woman clean her child's face with saliva on a tissue.

My mother used to do that and she is not Polish. In her defense, the only handi-wipes available at the time were the lemon scented ones from KFC.

Life / Gifts from Poland (I'm returning to my country after a year in Poland) [36]

The effects after drinking absinthe are similar to those induced by good quality cannabis but are shorter-lasting. I hear.

Which did you hear about and which came from personal experience? Hehehehe

If you're going somewhere you can take agricultural products... What about the smoked cheeses they sell up in the mountains? I'm not sure how they taste, but they look great!

Life / Polish water safe to drink? [50]

Have you thought about buying something like a Brita water filter? Either one that fits on the tap or one that filters water into a special carafe?

Food / Origin of the pierogi [118]

Typical Polish-American destruction of our wonderful language.

You might notice that he was speaking English, not your wonderful language.

Gyouza are fantastic.

STOP IT! Unless you can tell me where to buy some west of Wrocław! :->

USA, Canada / Any Poles in Orange County, CA? [40]

I moved from Orange County to Poland about a year and a half ago. I'm always bucking the trends!
Make sure you check out Jon's Market on Golden West street in Huntington Beach. They specialize in Central/Eastern European products not just Polish.

I get your point about not installing a filter on a communal water tap, but maybe a water filter pitcher would work.

History / Polish inventors - what have they ever given to the world? [101]

, the first submarine( human powered)

He may have invented A submarine. He did not invent the first submarine. The Hunley operated successfully 14 years previous, and The Turtle beat it by about 100 years.

Life / Price of cigarettes in Poland? [192]

And this is what happens to those very lungs. After only a few years.

You realize, of course, that the guy with the "healthy lung" is just as dead as the other guy, right?

Yeah. He might have gotten hit by a speeding ice cream truck while crossing the street to buy a pack of cigarettes.

UK, Ireland / Raising Bilingual Children - How are you teaching your children? Your experiences? [74]

If you are like most parents you will pray that they will someday start talking until they do, then pray that they will someday shut up! :->

Kids always learn to speak differently to different people. The way they say something to Mom is not the way they say it to Dad. And the way they talk to kids at school is not the way they speak to the teachers. Why not take advantage of that and the presence of native speakers during the time of life when they are most receptive to learning language?

USA, Canada / The history of Polish mafia in Chicago, Illinois [51]

how to go about researching the polish mafia

First, try Polish mobs, Polish gangs, etc. mafia is Italian and most contemporary sources (I assume you're looking for prohibition era. If not, nevermind. :->) would not call the Polish gangs "mafia". Also, you might want to include Detroit in your search.

Life / Moving to Poland Part-Time (probably Katowice) [56]

Which part of Sosnowiec are they from? :->
My wife is Śląsk on her birthday and Gorole on her name day....
Katowice is not a bad area if you need to be near heavy industry. and Śląsk (the language) has heavy German influence which makes it easier to learn for a native English speaker. Not so many szcz type phonemes.

Life / Scars of Communism on Polish culture. [55]

It is impossible to have a foot or two of space between yourself and the person behind you ...

Just tremble, roll your eyes, and talk to people who aren't there, preferably in a language other than Polish. You'll find you have lots of space in the line.

Travel / Best place to exchange money in Poland? [98]

I always use a bankomat (ATM) and withdraw in złoty. Most of the bankomats now offer to charge you in dollars (or Pounds, or Euros I suppose) and give you a "guaranteed rate" which seems to be 4 or 5 percent worse than what I get by letting my bank do the exchange. I don't know if that is true of most banks or only mine.

Travel / Best place to exchange money in Poland? [98]

never use an atm to withdraw pln,

Not true. I get the same rate that Forex shows as the current exchange rate when I withdraw pln. Kantors always take a bite out of you when exchanging money. That is, after all, how they pay their rent. And unless Kalifornia is the newest woj. mine is not a Polish bank.
