Life / 3 reasons why you hate Poland. [1049]

delphiandomine
Plenty of business sense here, otherwise people wouldn't be driving round in mostly-new cars, would they?

I don't know, seems pretty dumb to take a high interest long term loan to pay for something as worthless as a new car. And even more appalling is when people take out loans in currencies that they are not earning.

Food / Your all time favourite Polish Dishes! [108]

I had some shockingly good zurek outside of Kielce at a friends place. He had just brought his pig to the butcher, so we had fresh sausage and eggs fresh from the coop. It was amazing. There were some diced potatoes in there, pieces of bacon, something green, bread on the side. Speaking of which, it's about time to head to Kielce again...

Life / Are foreigners welcome in Poland? [267]

And ? get use to it!

That's just kind of what happens when something new and different comes along. If I drove a Ferrari through a village, people would stare.

but calling him a monkey should never be allowed on a public forum with moderators.

I agree with you, "monkey" should be reserved exclusively for Amy Winehouse

Law / Shipping a car from USA to Poland [86]

How long are you planning on staying in Poland? Is your car still covered under warranty? Does it use the same parts as any common hondas? How long have you owned it?

There is an older thread on this with some good information: polishforums.com/law/poland-shipping-car-usa-7022/

Food / What is your favorite Polish Vodka? [653]

Russian standard??? Their standard is very low! :-)

Want to have some fun with snobby friends? Do a vodka tasting party. Try this, get a couple of bottles of the usual stuff, belvedere, chopin, sobieski, that horrible finnish stuff, that even worse swedish stuff, grey goose, russian standard platinum, and some bottom shelf stuff. Do blind taste tasting and watch with joy as people drink different vodkas and think they're the same one, people drinking 10zl vodka and swearing that it's grey goose. Ah, good times. I can tell chopin and russian standard platinum out of the crowd. Everything else just kind tastes the same (and of course, zubrowka...but that falls into the flavored category..).

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

People have to remember Americans and Brits were not always fat!

Just an interesting tidbit from back in 2006

There are now more overweight people across the world than hungry ones

Life / Fat People in Poland? [161]

America - too much Tv watching. Available foods...Not to mention you CANT walk anywhere. The layout of my city atleast it would take a day to get somewhere and even then you have do dodge highways, cars, buses, no sidewalks.....it is a number of things..

You have to have the motivation to get off your ass and buy decent food, go out for walks in the parks, not stay glued to the idiot box. The possibility is there, most people are just too damn lazy to actually do it.

News / Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport to close in September [27]

I wonder why it is scheduled for September as this is the highest season with even more air traffic than in July or August.

September is the summer month with the least movements. Is it good to lay concrete when it's cold, maybe that has something to do with it?

News / Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport to close in September [27]

Alternatively they could do the runways one at a time: not idea from a flying point of view but better than shutting the airport.

The airport will be closed for a total of 6 non consecutive days (sat and sun). They are fixing the slab of concrete where the two runways intersect. Building a parallel runway would be ridiculously expensive and not worth it. Warsaw sees less traffic than Birmingham, Alicante, Malaga, and those airports don't even have crosswind runways.

LOT will have to cancel some (weekend) flights, and the tourist bombers won't be able to fly there for 6 days in September. Modlin won't be finished for a while to come.

News / Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport to close in September [27]

This country really is the epitome of incompetence, its just laughable.

Why do you say that? What's incompetent about closing a runway to perform needed maintenance on the slowest weekends when it is still safe to do so?

News / Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport to close in September [27]

They should have probably told the airlines who use the runway that it is being closed to avoid any problems.

Completely agreed...even though it is clearly in the AIP, that's not how to tell your customers..

That part goes back to what I was arguing in another thread with regards to quality management (or lack thereof). Baby steps, baby steps. Maybe another 20 years...maybe another 50...

No one is really worried about oil running out, it's just a question of when other technologies become viable price wise. Swiftfuel is looking really nice as a replacement for Avgas, their production costs are dropping like mad. Biofuel is pretty much a 1:1 replacement for JetA... or going the dirty route, we still have massive amounts of coal just waiting to be liquefied...

Food / Schmaltz.. is it still used in Poland [21]

Smalec cooked with onions and bacon bits and spread on bread is a good way to keep you foreigners from falling over after the fifteenth vodka shot. Russians and Poles have known this for centuries. In fact, any fat food will do.

schmaltz, herring in cream sauce, egg salad...healthy pile of dark bread

I dream about Liechtenstein someday invade us and forcibly incorporate to their duty. This nightmare would be over. :)

That is one of the greatest comments i've seen posted here.

Life / Polish and Czechs [191]

So i asked them how many words they knew in Welsh, Celt or Gaelic (Scotts and Irish lingos) and funny enough, they didnt know any!

How much Hungarian do you know? German?

It would make near as much sense to learn Welsh or Gaelic as 99.999% of speakers also speak English. There is no common language among the countries that you mentioned, so it would make sense to learn a bit of vocabulary from your neighbors.

Yes,Czechs deep inside like the Russians although not admiring that openly but their behavior shows other things. And Russians like CR.

Czechs don't really hold a grudge that well over multiple generations.

I think Karlovy Vary is now officially considered a part of Russia. 2 flights a day to Moscow, and 3 times a week to Petersburg :)

A Czech anecdote... President of Czech Rep says: "If Russia keeps on threatening us over installation of missile-shield, I'll issue an order to bomb Karlovy Vary". :)

HEH!

As a foreigner, It seems to me that when you cross from Poland to Czech, the villages become more neat. Generally, the road and urban signage is also less shoddy than in Poland, more "in ordnung"..

I noticed that too, especially coming down the E67 and the 462.

Life / Poczta Polska Is Killing ME! Transit time. [28]

They're a nightmare because of old people using them for a social life and allegro traders posting endless pieces. That's not Poczta Polska's fault.

That is front and center PPs fault. Have you seen anything implemented in the last 5 years to increase efficiency? I've got three of those little package slips on my desk right now, why aren't the packages delivered to me?

Travel / Driving to Poland from Ireland end of jan, Need Advice [26]

I just plowed from Wroclaw to Frankfurt return without a problem. The A4 was completely clear. Good driving all the way through. If you're driving through Germany, ADAC has current information on traffic and road conditions on their website.

Studying languages shouldn't be obligatory I think or at least one should have a wide choice...

English is more of a required business skill now, like math, basic sciences... Making English obligatory at a young age gives you much better chances at being successful in the meshed global world. English allows you to work and communicate in just about every country in the world, it's just another plus. Learning another language out of love for the language is a bonus. But English, like it or not, is a must for a decent job in the global world. You probably can sleep through your English classes if you want to be a mechanic in Warsaw, or a brick layer in Ostrava...but if you want to work for a company that has a presence, or customers in any other country, English is a must.

Once French is out of the way, going to switch back to sadistic slavic languages and try to pick up Russian. I'm seeing 6 months in a village somewhere to make that happen...

Life / Polish and Czechs [191]

There is a cartoon called "Futurama". In one of episodes, main characters go to museum of XX century and Bender (the robot) take a handset to hear some extinct language. And guess what he've heard ? "Bonne journée!" ;))

Unfortunately some of the places I will be going require French (lots of really messed up african countries...).

I hope our national soccer team will one day beat them in a deep playoff game so I can rub it in his face!

You mean the USA? There is a very good chance of that happening. If you mean Poland... well, football and Poland is always severely depressing and probably one of the major contributors to alcoholism in this country.
